The Importance of Irrelavent Courses.
Joe here.
I'm just wondering what the importance of an irrelevant course is to a university. I have a 65% in Physics (and the likelihood of it dropping due to my exam is most likely 100%). What are my chances of getting into University for Honors Art (requiring only a 70% in English, which I more than have), with say, a 50% in Physics (which I don't have, I'm more competent than that)?
If this is spam, my apologies. I know I have a tendency to do this.

I called the University you're thinking of applying to and they said you're screwed.

Not funny, dude.
Well, in OSU they tend to look more and more at your major GPA (the grades you got in the courses you need to take for your major rather than your electives or general courses) as you move along in your curriculum; a bad grade in a GEC course is pretty much going to be forgotten by the time you're doing your major work.
For example, the business school and potential employers are going to be more interested in what I get in my finance or management courses than they are in my Biology 101 or Math 132 course.

Woah, woah, slow down. I'm Canadian, so we don't have any fancy jargon. What's OSU mean? And GPA?

Not funny, dude.
Probably not, but, dude, call them up and ask. They'll know better than we will.

I have. They talked about 'depends on the course', on which I elaborated on Honors Art, which they replied 'I don't know, I'll get back to you'. I haven't gotten a reply yet, so I'm really worried.

Ohio State University and Grade Point Average.
The GPA is a value created by assigning a number to each grade on the scale; for example, an A is worth 4.0, a B is worth 3.0, a C 2.0, a D 1.0, and for the various in between grades like B+ or C- they are assigned values in between.
To make it simple, the closer your GPA is to 4.0, usually the better.

Start calling them every day. Make a nuisance of yourself. Maybe enlist your ... do you have Guidance Counsellors in Canada? Folks at your high school who help with stuff like this?

Ah. Then each year I've had a 4.0 GPA so far save for possible this year, due to my Physics mark.

Yes, but they're quite apathetic.

So your cumulative GPA is going to be something like a 3.8 or higher? I wouldn't worry about it, then because that's more than enough to get in to most honors programs.
OSU's Business Honors requirement is for a 3.5 GPA after the first year, for example.

Sure they are, they're academic bureaucrats. The point is that you can't let their apathy screw you over. Seriously, if you get the old, "We'll get back to you," you have to ask them, "When? I'd like to be available for when you call me." Then they go, "Oh, we won;t call you." And you go, "Well, why not? You can reverse the charges. Or can I expect something in the mail by such-and-such a date? And your name is? Can you spell that for me? May I speak to your supervisor, please?"
Always maintain an even strain, be polite, but take no bullshit. You're obviously pretty wrought up about this, and they have the answers, so get in there and wring it out of them. Besides, isn't it their job to answer questions like this?

I will do my best.
