Poster Names and Gender

Farflorin
29-01-2007, 20:20
This is not a thread to ask what people's genders are, but rather, a curious glimpse at how people picture other posters.

For example... like what gender you think people are based on their names...

I've been surprised in the past. People who I had pegged as guys were chicks and vice versa.

after they read about 2 of my posts, they change their mind.

Darknovae ran a poll to find out how people saw her. That's why we call her "Pancake" now! I go be general impressions and name, which combination is not always accurate.

Unless the poster has an obviously feminine name (or the handy "I am a girl!" thing in the sig) I always assume it's a guy. Ultimately, not that it really matters what gender the poster is, but it cuts down on some confusion.

To be fair, I've had very good friends tell me that they wouldn't believe I am female except for the fact that I have prominent boobies and I tell stories about my menses. (As somebody who greatly enjoys gorey movies, I get a kick out of my monthly bleeding spells. Wicked gross!! SWEET!)

I guess there must be. Given the number of trolls on NSG there must be an all-year mating season, which I wager would require a significant number of troll-ettes. Unless, of course they breed in the same way as bacteria. Which would be strangely apt;)

Don't worry about it. I have a number of traits that people would label as male, if they were son inclined to label such things. And I don't know very many women who are big fans of Heinlein, or who read as much ancient history as I do, or who have subscribed to Scientific American for twenty years. The person who runs account this is usually a girl, but right now she's not here. So the point goes to the Y Chromosome for now.

I wonder if everyone who guesses the poster's gender also assumes that their sex matches it.

A very good point! Interchangable use of these terms is tres annoying.

And learned the hard way that names ending with 'ia' or 'a' doesn't mean that someone is necessarily a girl. :D

Letila being a classic example of that one. The fact that they had a picture of a moth with a stunning resemblance to a vagina on each and every one of their posts didn't help either.

I'm sorry. I thought I'd told you.
You probably did, but I probably read it before my morning coffee.

You could tell me, "The world has been taken over by rampaging space mushrooms and we're all going to die," and if I haven't had my coffee I will nod, smile, and gaze off into space. Fifteen minutes later, I'll be like, "WTF is up with all these space mushrooms?!"

I never really think about another posters gender, or sex, unless they bring it up. (pardon the pun), but in typing I will usually refer to them as "He"

I used to use "she" as my default pronoun, simply because I don't see why it would be any different than using "he" as the default, but I was shocked by the number of posters who were deeply offended at my use of this pronoun. Apparently, having somebody assume that you are female is the worst possible insult (while having somebody assume you are male is...normal?).

I agree fully with this, though I switch in my pronoun usage, that way, it keeps everyone guessing.

I for one would not be insulted if someone refered to me by the wrong pronoun. Its not like we are talking to each other face to face after all. I simply use the male pronoun by default due to the fact that the majority of people here are male. Strangely enough, I assumed you were male, Bottle, until I found out different.

You see, "he" has one less keystroke than "she", making it the logical choice. Thilly. :D

I use it now simply because of the freak-outs I encountered over my use of the female pronoun. It's just not worth dealing with that kind of distraction. Female posters usually control themselves better and just politely correct those who assume they are male, so I rely upon their maturity. Not really fair, but there you have it.

me too, actually.

When people try to refer to me by a pronoun ("he" or "she") I always have to correct them, because I don't like being referred to in generic terms. As for what to call people whose gender I don't know, I either refer to them by full name or "it"/"they" (bad habits from spoken english, I know).

All women on the internet receive one standard issue penis (9ft long and 3ft wide), two standard testicles (like giant watermelons in a burlap bag) and 9000 feet of thigh-thick pubic hair.

Actually, that's a myth. The men and women are also FBI agents. They're all looking for pedophiles and terrorists, not knowing that pedophiles and terrorists actually hang out at the Pede & Terry Bar in Dublin, as opposed to the internets. So they just sit around all day and watch pr0n and pretend to be men/women/children until they grow into pedophiles and terrorists too, and a new generation of FBI agents steps in.

It's an endless cycle.
