I'm jsut wondering, how much money does the state (in America on average) ussually make off of their inmates. I remember from a jail visit before that the state makes a load of money off of the license plates and other stuff inmates make and it sells.


Anyone know what these figures are or where I can find them?

From what I can find, it costs $15-20K per annum to detain a person, but I can't find anything talking about how much the state makes.

But there is some interesting stuff about privatised prisons.
