Freshman Seminar

At my high school, Freshman Seminar is a class where you learn to "make the transition into high school". We learn to take notes and study and take tests and blah blah blah... Supposedly to help us succeed in high school.

I'm taking it the second semester, when I've already been a freshman for the first half of the year already.

And, though FS is an elective, it's required. A required elective.

Should they have axed this class for the second semester (letting in kids who really needed the class) or what? Thoughts?

Who cares about everybody else? Try and talk to some guidance counsellor or academic advisor or whatever and ask them to organise it so that you can spend your time more productively.

Glad my High School doesn't have that. I mean, I would fail the frickin' thing. Why? Notes. It is literally physically impossible for anybody to make me take notes. If you strapped me down to a machine that was designed to force people to take notes, the machine would either break or simply pop out of existance, the latter due to it defying the laws of physics.

Also: Required elective. *Giggle*

Seems like that class is taking up valuable study time. Friggin' hypocrites.

A required elective...errr....I think I am a bit speechless...its like something you'd hear coming from the White House or Downing Street...

And I suspect if you question the usage of that phrase you'll be told off for being a smart arse...

I now remember why I hated school...

I can't. It is a "required elective" Trust me, if I could transfer out, I would. But I'm unable to.

I remember that. Ours was compulsory too, but it was only for an hour every fortnight, and it was... slightly different. Let's say I won't torture you by mentioning the details. :p

How long is this class per week? But anyway, I'd agree this is stupid. Notes and studying etc doesn't need to be covered by a compulsory class. (yeah, why is it called a required elective?)

Yeah... I'm in honors classes, have an IQ of 129 or 134 (depending on the test) and am one of the smartest people in my class (not to toot my own horn or anything [hahaha, toot a horn... hahaha.... band joke... sorry]) and I have to take a class that should have been taken in freaking elementary school.

To be perfectly honest, it sounds like one of those things that it is better to just do than to complain about.....If it is a required elective, that means everyone else has to take it at some point as well, so you aren't the only one... Plus, maybe it will teach you how to actually take notes......

The class is 90 min long (like all other classes) and is taken every day.

Oh, crap. That's worse. "Healthful Living" (aka PhysEd) was also a "required elective" and the teacher did highlight abstinence, but she didn't assume that everyone in the class was a chaste little angel who had never seen someone naked. In middle school all we heard was "if you are having sex, stop now". The PE teacher said "if you are having sex, use a condom and birth control". Mind you, she didn't tell us *how* to use one, but she did give us facts.

Well I think its more that it teaches people not to question bullshit. If everyone needs to do it then it should be a required course...not a 'required elective' which gives the impression that you have a choice...when you don't...

On the other hand, I suppose it doesn't take much to post a :headbang: :(

I don't know what Sex Ed classes are like, because I didn't do PE (long story). Is this going to end badly? :p Well, I suppose I shouldn't worry, because I know I've received balanced and accurate information about sex from NSG. :)

I mean...fucking hell...I am gobsmacked...abstinence...how do you teach that beyond a sense of religious/political morality?

Ours was called "Life Management Skills" and about six weeks of it was spent on sex-ed and relationships. The rest was spent on nutrition, health, stress and time management, etc.

That "Freshman Seminar" sounds like a waste of time. It's not that hard to take notes...and having it second semester sounds pretty pointless.

Public school starting 5 years ago, still doing it today, it was their first year it was introduced.

Was there a sex ed course as well?
"Sex ed" was a month-long, once a week derivation of health class which was just some people from who knows where coming and splitting the class into boys and girls and then playing stupid games that had nothing to do with anything.

I mean...fucking hell...I am gobsmacked...abstinence...how do you teach that beyond a sense of religious/political morality?

You teach all sorts of bullshit like contraceptives are imaginary, which is why no one mentions them, and sex automatically culminates in pregnancy and a myriad of STDs.

Ye gads...With all due respect but there is no way I could expose a child of mine to that kind of bollocks...

Public School....as in? Remember over here in the UK public schools are private...

Either way that sounds totally fucked to me...

I can not take notes... impossible to hear, remember and write down... I rely on sheer memory and the PDFed powerpoint-slides of the lecturer... if I had a 286*-Laptop with a working battery it might be different...

I remember when they tried to introduce a mentoring program like that at my high school. All I can say, is I'm glad I was 18 when they did; I walked out of the class and the teacher could do nothing because I was age of majority. Also, it couldn't go on my transcript because it wasn't required, even though we had to be in that stupid class. It was a class for everyone in the school about time management and career planning.

Only those under 18 had to do it; if you were 18, age of majority, the teacher couldn't do anything to stop you from being a little shitface and walking out iof you wanted to.

Heh. Our schools seminar class is for kids who score in the 95th percentile or higher on the ITBS. We have done these things this year:

-Learned about advertising and propaganda
-Made a futuristic city (Each person did their own)
-Made a PSA
-Watched the Andromeda Strain.

Ha ha ha ha ha.

No, we didn't have a freshman transition course. We just had an endless list of other mandatory electives, including Home Ec...where the idiots conglomerate over a stove...and including in Home Ec was "how to prepare for college" when it was clear that half of them weren't ever going to get into college, being far too busy getting knocked-up.

When I was in HS, we had Freshman Seminar. That was back when I thought I could play the trumpet, so I was excused from the seminar so I could be in band.

From what I heard it was a bullshit class. Most people said it was like a study hall, but some people said that the people actually didn't let them do their homework there.

I never had freshman seminar to tell me how to succeed in high school, and I (barely) graduated just fine.

Eh, not all colleges do that. The more selective schools, in particular, tend to assume that anyone who gets admitted is already a reasonably good student.

I'm sure being taught study tips and note-taking skills is useful for some people, but I'm also sure I would have lost my mind very quickly in a class like that. Bleh.
