First off, this is based off Frank Miller's graphic novel, not the actual battle.
That being said this movie looks downright amazing. Your thoughts non-historical buffs?
I can't stop replaying the trailers :D

I thought the style of the movie reminded me of Frank Miller. They've done a remarkable job of rendering his style on film, I must say, if the rest of the film is at all like the trailer.

Every time someone tried to describe this movie to me I was always 'meh.' I'm a Frank Miller fan, but hadn't read 300 and didn't know anything about it. Wasn't grabbing me.
Then I saw the trailer.
Opening day. I'll be there. (I need to pad as many things around Ghost Rider to dull the pain. Ghost Rider was the first comic book character I really really got into and remains my favorite and even though they have taken what makes him my favorite and instead turned it into Spawn on a motorcycle, I'll still watch it because I'm apparently an all day sucker...

Same.
Coincidentally enough I'm missing my Ancient Greek and Roman Speeches lecture to go see it. I demand credit! :D

Then let me be a second. I have a bachelor's in History, but I'm also a film buff and a fan of Miller's for years.
As long as they don't get things egregiously, stupidly wrong (and if it's based on MIller's 300, they won't), I'm not going to complain about inaccuracies. This is a film, an entertainment, not a documentary.

All two of them? (though 300 seems to have a shot straight out of Troy, dude jumping with spear on another guy). Oh, three. Forgot Gladiator.

Troy shouldn't count as a movie as much it is a torture device.

I heard Alexander was terrible. I loved/love gladiator, and Troy wasnt anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Brad Pitt played the part VERY WELL, I thought. He really captured the Greek Hero character perfectly. Orlando...he was ok. Nothing really memeroble....but not really bad. So yeah...I didnt think it was that bad. Gladiator was by the far the best of those, though. Though this seems like it may be able to give gladiator a run for its money.
And now, for some insperational words from our sponsors.
Ancient Persia may be dead...but modern Persia lives on, and with every breath it takes, it threatens us. We must fight them like these Spartans did before us.

Go buy the 1962 "300 Spartans" movie, it should hold you over until this one come out.
p.s., I take it that this new movie isn't really a remake of the 300 Spartans movie, just the same theme, is that correct? Does anybody know?

It should be 300 Spartans and about 7000 Greeks holding up in a mountain pass to stop the Million man army (from persia) that was coming south into Greece. The Spartans should eventually lose the battle, but they are said to have held up the Persians for three precious days, which is, three more days time for the Athenians and the rest of Greece to prepare for the oncoming war to defeat the Persians...

I've been following this for a while, heh last semester we actually got the prof for my Roman Republic class let us watch one of the earlier trailers in class:D Looks real cool and though I am a bit of a history buff I'm quite willing to overlook things if the movie is good/cool enough, although I honestly haven't read all that much about the subject at hand here so I probably wouldn't catch anything, but the most obvious bits.
As for the 300 vs a million, if it is inaccurate as I said this isn't my main period of interest, well it just means it fits with the classical tradition of greatly exagerating the numbers in millitary forces to better potray the fact that they were considered big.

movie looks incredible though the ancient accounts of herodutus were highly exaggerated. He wrote that 1 million persians invaded.A more acurate number would be at most 100,000.Think about it.The Persians had 250,000 at Gaugumela and that was a desperation move.Whats up with the persian Immortals? They look like Samurai.
Enough with my rants, movie looks sweet,I'm gonna see it.

Congratulations, you made me spit Dr. Pepper all over my monitor.
Troy: After Menelaus died I grabbed my copy of the Illiad and then hurled it at the TV. It was a pretty good movie outside of that and Orlando Bloom.

In my Ancient Greek Speeches class we were reading about defenses for Helen after she was captured. Upon which the King of Sparta demands her head and a student raises her hand and says:

Gladiator and Braveheard were amazing. Troy and Kingdom of Heaven were enjoyable. Alexander was utter and absolute crap. One of the worst movies I´ve seen.
Anyway, 300 is based on a comic book (novel if you want). Its "cartoonish", just like Sin City. And everyone knows how cool Sin City was. Its not suposed to be realistic, its suposed to be COOL.
The movie itself says that the story is told by a guy who saw the battle. Its not the portrayal of the truth, but the visual representation of the guy´s story.
And its 300 vs 1 million because the greeks went to a pass where a lot of people cant go through. There, they held their ground for three days, after which all of them died to the last man. They didnt win. They just stood there to give more time for the armies to assemble. Otherwise Xerxes would´ve had conquered all of Greece before they were able to defent themselves.

The real bttle of Thermopylae had 300 spartans + 400 Thebans and 700
Thesbians against around 200,000 persians (historians generally agree on this number assuming the greek estimate of 1,000,000 to be to many but its still truely great story, i've been a fan of the real story since i was in grade 10, i've no finished Uni so thats a while.

No, no, this kind of computing power is brought to bare on every project we do now that requires any kind of visual effects. We used the Silicon Graphics machines on Night At The Musem, Fantastic Four, We're using them now on the remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers... Dream Girls, just about everything we do has at least something that we use them for. This particular film, though, was pratically created by them.

Why Alexander sucked?
1. Because Colin Farell is an horible actor
2. Because Angelina Jolie role was far too stupid and unreal
3. Because they made Alexander gay
4. Because the battles (3 or 4) were too short, too uninspired and too boring
5. Because Val Kilmer did an horrible job as Philip II
6. Because the cutting and directing was horrible, meaning the movie had an horrible flow

Are you guys doing Fantastic Four Meets The Silver Surfer? Is it an abomination? It totally is, isn't it? I have this feeling I should not only avoid it, but actually move into a shelter until it is removed from theaters...I kinda like Silver Surfer, too. I had joked around with a friend of mine who is fairly fit and bald about filming a no-budget Surfer movie because actually that would be the only treatment that would capture him. It would just be a bunch of beauty shots with a hack philosophical voice over ending with the Surfer just off handedly dealing with whatever the 'crisis' was.
That, of course, was all for fun. So I guess I could still do it...

2- olympius's role in the alexander story was important yet subtle hard to capture

4- given
5- i thought val was ok, but each to thereown
6 & 7, to do a movie that covers so many events and so much time is difficult at best but, hey it could have been better

You started it. I just wanted you to know that.
Here's the thing. Ghost Rider is an amazing and complex character when you get right down to it. Johnny Blaze was not lied to by Mephistopheles. He makes the deal to save his Uncle (what is it with dead Uncles in Marvel comics...) from dying of cancer, so he dies in a motorcycle stunt. Blaze wants vengeance, he is given the spirit of vengeance. That's the thing, Blaze is actually confronted with his own desires. When he is faced with evil, wrongdoing, his urge for vengeance gives way to the Rider, and each time he gives over to that he loses a little bit more of his control. And he can't reconcile himself with the vengeance that the Rider exacts, the toll he takes.
It's a comic book character that actually problematizes the idea of a superhero, of vengeance. Is vengeance really worth your soul?
How does Cage view the character? "He takes this curse from the devil and turns it around on him to use it for good." No, dammit, that's Spawn.
He's turned one of the more complex and interesting comic book heroes into Spawn on a motorcycle.
Bah. BAH I say.
And yet, I'll still watch it. Even though I fuckin' hate that chick in it, whatshername. It's Hollywood, dammit, tits are a dime a dozen-go find a pair attached to an actress...

I'm just not looking forward to ever person who sees this movie thinking that they are some sort of History buff, like what happened with "Gladiator"(If someone says that this is historically accurate one more time, I break their nose), or "The Davinci Code"(Which is based on a FICTION novel for God's sake, which people take seriously). It looks like an enjoyable movie, with an epic feel.

That's not exactly true. Mephisto comes back to claim Blaze's soul but his cousin comes to his rescue. She'd been reading Blaze's occult books without his knowledge and drives Mephisto away with a spell.
Unfortunately the spell can't totally negate Blaze's original deal. Mephisto can't take Blaze's soul, but technically still holds the rights to it.
So he does the next best thing of melding it with Zarathos, one of Meph's underlings who was getting too powerful and uppity which was worrying Meph.
That way, he teaches Blaze a lesson and rids himself of a potential upsurper.
The two of them, understandably, hate each other initially but come to accept their situation and use it as best they can. Their common desire to be seperate and whole once more, along with their common hatred of Meph forms a common bond between them.
See: I can out-comic-nerd you!

So did I!
I did leave out the details to focus on thematic elements. And Zarathos and Blaze only worked together to get split, and Blaze tricked him into being trapped in that crystal.
Right around "Freaks" that comic book started to kick ass (I think issue 63, where they retold the origin).

Since you had the original series, I can't argue with you.
I liked how there was a underlying conflict and battle going on between them. Blaze hurt bad guys because they were bad, yet Zarathos just did it cause he enjoyed causing people pain.
Quite a deep question about vigilante superheros and their real reasons for fighting crime, especially in a kids comicbook.

In traditional Greek history, I'm pretty sure the numbers have always been 300 Spartens against a million Persians. The Graphic Novel is supposed to be based on the original legend of the battle.
All the glory to the Spartans, I guess.

I may go see it, I don't know.
I work for a movie theatre, so I could go to the midnight debut for free ^_~
