Paedophile walks away free... after conviction.

Mr Williams was given a 6-month sentence that was suspended for two years. Williams was convicted after he pleaded guilty to 10 charges of making indecent photographs between November 2005 and May last year.

Judge John Rogers QC said "As of yesterday I have to bear in mind a communication from the home secretary," by way of explaining the sentence.

He was referring to Mr Reid's appeal to the courts not to jail less serious and non-dangerous offenders because the prisons were "very close to capacity". What the Right Honourable Mr Reid means is that prisons are at and above capacity.

It appears New Labour is about as effective as wet blanket when it comes to crime, being neither 'tough on the causes of crime', nor 'tough on crime'.

Will Mr Reid prove such an embarressment that Tony has to give him the sack? It seems that the position of Home Secretrary is fast becoming the equivalent of... (I hate to use this analogy, but...) Professor of the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. During Labours 10 years of power the position has been held by Jack Straw, David Blunkett, Charles Clarke, John Reid, and soon someone else?

New Labour: You'll never meet a nicer bunch of complete incompetants.

2 things...he was given a suspended sentence...so he did not walk free...if he violates the conditions then he goes inside.

The second is that he was done for downloading kiddie porn...not making it...or thats what the Beeb reported...so I'm not really sure what going on there...

I agree with you though about the incompetence...and the thing that annoys me more is that after nearly ten years of New Liebur rule the Rev Smiler will still not take criticism during PMQ's and always turns the question into a rant about the previous Tory government...so I am sure he will blame this fiasco on the Tories as well.

The judge seems to suggest that he has suspended the sentence because of communication from the Home Office. And for all intents and purposes he is free. He is allowed to do as he wishes within the constraints of the law. Just like the rest of us. It just means that if he breaks the law again within 2 years he has to serve the sentence for this crime. So basically the government won't put him in jail unless he breaks the law (again). I think that's kinda like the deal the rest of us have.

The Beeb agrees with what I posted. But the BBC edit their online articles fairly often and the last edit on this article was 90 minutes after you posted.

The court heard he had downloaded dozens of pornographic images of children on to his computer.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6301125.stm

It's a sad day when there's criminals going unpunished because the prisons are full. :(

Not quite. He would be automatically banged up. The rest of us would be given a trial...

Thats weird...coz last night on the telly all they were saying was that he was downloading kiddie pron...and not making it...

If he was making it then I am very very VERY surprised he is not in prison...

From your link....

Mr Morgan's resignation follows opposition attacks on the home secretary over a child pornography case.

Derek Williams, 46, of Blaenau Ffestiniog, pleaded guilty to 10 charges of making indecent photographs between November 2005 and May last year.

The court heard he had downloaded dozens of pornographic images of children on to his computer.

But his six-month term of imprisonment was suspended for two years.

In sentencing Judge John Rogers QC said he had to bear in mind "the current sentencing climate".

This week, Mr Reid and other Cabinet ministers wrote to judges and magistrates asking them to imprison only the most dangerous and persistent criminals.

Now I am bit confused here...I thought making the images would be the photog...not someone who downloaded the pics or acted as a distributor..

Either way the situation is fucked up...

The obvious answer is to build more jails or to start killing the current inmates! Bring back the death penalty!

You really ought to think about getting a job with our current administration...

Now I am bit confused here...I thought making the images would be the photog...not someone who downloaded the pics or acted as a distributor..Maybe it means he downloaded these images and digitally altered them. Or maybe he made significant amounts of printed copies. I don't know, and neither do the press by the sounds of it.Either way the situation is fucked up...Yes, and it pisses me off even more that I was disenfrachised at the last general election.

But if does remind me of this.

Better yet, legalise soft drugs, both production and possession! There goes a whole bunch of people who no longer need to be locked up.

Why stop at soft? Legalize everything from pot to smack I say.

Aren't they the same thing

Pot: Marijuana. Smack: Heroin. You gotta get your slang straight or you'll never be able to score from street dealers.

It may be different in Ireland though...

Not by a long shot.

Smack is a hard drug - aka, heroin.

Pot is a soft drug.

And I am sure the criminal gangs running the drug scene in the UK would love that :p

At least I could get competitive prices... (I don't live in the UK, but would love it if even just pot was legalized here)
