I need to use her cheapo printer because mine is out of ink, and it's being a jerk.
I replaced her printer cartridges and that page thats supposed to print out where you look for the dark arrow.....didn't print all the lines and the arrows are all smudgy and I know that I put the cartridge in right.
I really need to print misc. maps and such for my trip.
It was working fine before I put in the new cartridge.......
help?

You need to show that printer who is boss. Take it out into the street and smash it with a sledgehammer. After that it had better work right, goddammit.
On an unrelated note, my postcount now matches the year in which I joined. Scary.

Threaten it.
with a computer virus.
Try cleaning the print heads. Use q-tips or cotton swaps +rubbing alcohol and gently swab the area where the print cartridge spits out its ink. You might also want to check the cartridge itself to make sure it isn't leaking.
Threaten it.
My sister used to do that. She'd take the paper tray off and beat the printer when she was unhappy with it.
Strangely enough the damn thing would always stop working the minute she stepped foot into the house, no matter how well it had been going before hand.
Put on a leather jacket, grease your hair and punch it.

what kind of printer? There should be a printer util that you use to iron out these issues...not the windows one but the manufacturers util...
it's a lexmark, I went to their webpage and it was like "did you take the tape off the cartridge?" yes. "is the printer plugged in?" yes. "you shouldn't have any problems" but, I still do damn it.

Printers are evil. Kill them all.
But yeah, if NERVUN's advice doesn't work (and you can actually just use a tissue) use the util to clean/align the print heads.

Eh.. Dig out the manual or find one online. Check suggested methods for cleaning the printer. Usually only takes a min or two.

Buy another one. Crucify the old one as an example.

I hate all printers.
Printers are the reason the 'paperless office' uses more paper than old-fashioned offices did. Paper used to be sacred and essential, but now people print out rubbish just because they "might need it later."
(/grouching)
I believe you when you say you put it in right, but would it hurt to take it back out and try again?
Lexmark cartridge? Generic brands are OK for a basic printer, but not so good for a new model 'photo' printer (the printer manufacturers don't want generics to work in their printers, so they 'improve' their design to make it so.)
I still favour the sledgehammer solution. Do it for the trees!

does the Ink Cartridge sit on a sliding carrage or does it install on the side and the printheads move over the paper?

you ask hard questions.... :(
When I open the flappy thing this slidey thing slides to the center, where I push this tabby thingy to open and the printer cartridges go in there, there's a color one, and a black one
they look like this.

I know, I told someone the other day not to buy one. I got it 4 years ago for like $40
I have a Canon now which is all pretty and functional, only it's out of ink and I need to print things tonight, so I am using my old lexmark (that I passed to the kids for their own amusements)

Yeah, i've, sadly, got a Lexmark as well. Got it free with the PC, has a scanner and all in it so I can't really complain (especially since it was free), but since then i've got a Canon for printing. It works a dream. I still use the Lexmark for scanning, but that's it.
Although, working in a photo lab with a full chemical printer, anything coming from an inkjet or a laser just doesn't look as good as it used to....

Yes it does.
It's a Lexmark z600 Color Jetprinter.
now if I understand it, the alignment page prints but is all smeary. the lines (usually TWO colors) cannot be seen... correct?

true but the kids almost always print things like this (http://www.davidadamsonline.com/images/free_coloring_sheet_1.jpg), and I always just print text and throw away maps.

try this, take out the black cartridge and clean the contacts. look at the bottom and you should see what looks like a copper pate with a thin black line. gently wipe that clean, don't press too hard. use a clean rag or napkin, do not use tissue or cotton anything. the last thing you want is fibers on that.
your color cartridge may need changing also.
reinsert and see if there is any change.

No, you can't be having any problems. The tape is off and the device is plugged in. Why are you lying to the Lexmark webpage?
