By the way, if you're wondering where I was for the past few weeks, and I bet you no one has, I'll just say I hate my internet router power supply. I hate it oh so much.

Yay! :)

My family's coming around to my house for lunch (in approximately 8 hours). I'm going to cook some chops & snags on the barbie, and I've already put a slab in the esky. We'll flog the Poms in the cricket, it should be a great day all round. :)

I love how I understand this. It damn well better be a slab of Foster's.

Wtf? Is it just me, or is Jolt really messing up the post times today? About half the threads I've seen, the OP has... not... been the OP.
Ah well, my plans probably involve going to my dad's house and watching the fireworks from several kilometers away, we're not that big on Australia Day. Still, should be fun anyway.

Nope, Jolt's been time warping lately. You've been away so you haven't seen it. It has something to do with one (or some) of their servers being set to to a slightly different time.

Corrected for accuracy. The shit you get over there is not even made in Australia. It's brewed in the UK & is watered down (about 4% as opposed to about 5% here). However, I heartily approve of you supporting Aus. :)

No, they call it Invasion Day. I can understand that, but I don't agree with it.

In what way do you not agree with it? Is it just that the invasion didn't actually happen on that particular day, or are you disagreeing with the term 'invasion'?

26/01/1788 was the day the British officially established their colony in Australia. There were earlier dates on which Europeans landed, navigated, etc, but that's the recognised date. Europeans invaded Australia, sames as happened in the Americas, there's no doubt about it. I think there needs to be much more official acknowledgement of that, and a serious attempt made to try & rectify the problems it has caused. But to me Australia Day isn't Invasion Day, it's about enjoying the good things about our country. To me it's not a negative day.

But you admit that there is not enough official recognition of an 'invasion', right? So you can see the political value of an alternative view to Australia Day, despite the possibly inaccuracies of labelling that day 'Invasion Day'? If that particular day is chosen to celebrate the founding of the nation, and there are no other days that publicly decry the way in which it was founded, then clearly the only real chance to voice opposition or to highlight other perspectives is on that day.

Yes, absolutley.

So you can see the political value of an alternative view to Australia Day, despite the possibly inaccuracies of labelling that day 'Invasion Day'?

Yes I can, but it doesn't relate to my perspective of Australia Day, so I don't agree with it.

No, there is Sorry Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorry_Day), & National Reconciliation Week, which I do support. That day is very high in the public awareness & support.

I'm not going go out & have a go at those who participate in Invasion Day, but I don't agree with it & I think it probably does their case more harm than good.

Ah, well that changes things then, though I still support buggering up national celebrations when there continue to be serious violations of aboriginal rights in Australia (as in Canada). But that's just me. Not to mention that Sorry Day is not official.

And yes, do bear in mind why Aboriginals call it Invasion Day.

You can celebrate being Australian without rewriting history à la Howard to "erase" major aspects some Australians aren't comfortable with.

Get shot
The experience will be all the more real if you can get the white Australian who shoots you to claim that they were trying to make friends with you.

Neesika - QFT

(making the same assumption)
as the old saying goes, all it takes for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing

the comfortable, priveleged, liberal (in the literal sense, not the political distortion of the word), western world many of us live in was built on the backs of slave labour and global pillaging for centuries (aka colonialism)

we can't turn back the clock, but acknowledging the barbarism of the past and attempting to reconcile with the disenfranchised victims is essential to an integrated future
and Australia is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries in the world, yet only abandoned the "White Australia" legislation as recently as 1973

if you don't want occurrences such as The Big Day Out organisers requesting no Australian flags out of fear of racist attacks, if you're offended by their association of the Australian flag with bigotry, you'd do well to learn your history and understand that it wasn't just your parents hard work that built the infrastructure you so easily take for granted, and it's not because you live in a 'civilised' country that you have higher standards of living, education, health etc
