Not much. The police in Tijuana, Mexico have been stripped of their guns and issued slingshots. Way to control crime Mexico. Why don't you take your army's grenades away and give them eggs to throw?

Not that it makes much difference, since the cops rarely use their guns to fight crime. More like the opposite. In fact, that's why they were taken away and the army is in control of security in Tijuana right now, which the article conveniently forgets to mention.
Will the US media ever have a bit of professionalism and stop lying for once? Will the US public ever learn to inform themselves properly?
Doubtful.
Sounds a lot like the Dzanjiru military (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12235442&postcount=55)....

Yes! Let's be perfectly honest like every other media outlet in the world.

If there's a thread on this forum, someone will have posted a slight against Americans in it within six posts of the OP.
Arm them with swords and dress them like samurai. That way, at least, they can look cool while getting shot. :p

They don't have to be perfectly honest or unbiased, but at least they can make an effort to properly inform. Really, guys, when compared with international news sources yours are simply dreadful. And it's not anti-Americanism, it's simply how it is.

Well, if someone makes an anti-Mexican comment I feel the need to answer in kind.

It's too hot in Tijuana. Dress them like Maori warriors instead.

The only two I really ever read are The New York Times and the Washington Post, which are pretty reliable when compared to the Union-Tribune of San Diego. I'm sure if you went to every yocal media source in the EU you'd find some equally appalling material. Just so happens it's easier to nit pick at anything American nowadays.

There was an anti-mexican comment? I must have missed...
Haha Mexico is dirty and poor!
Anyway this an article to laugh at, not to read while smoking a corncob pipe in front of a victorian fire place while discussing trade affairs to snooty rich men.
Knowing the difference saves posts.

The difference is that "informative" news in the US are the exemption, while "entertainment" news are the rule ("entertainment" not because that's the subject matter, but because they are oriented to entertain and not inform).
There are, of course, "shockers" everywhere in the world, but these tend to be the exemption and easy to spot. In the US they're almost indistinguishable nowadays. The difference of how news are treated in the US and elsewhere is so palpable that even watching CNN and CNN International is a totally different experience.

It is funny, but the comment could have been more humorous and less anti-Mexican.

And they should be able to keep the tacos warm inside the suit.

Is it so wrong to try to cross them? The Colbert Report and The Daily Show have become great successes in getting Americans to actually care about the news. The people who can't tell that it's news and entertainment are a grand minority.
This is just a perspective from a person who lives on the East Coast. States can be as different as France and Belarus so our news sources are a little 'varied'.
As for the comment, you can take it seriously or as a joke, arguing which seems a little moot.
Tacos rule.

When we were kids we used to take the heads off birds with 'black widdow' catapults.

No, no. The Daily Show and Colbert Report are entertainment shows and they're perfectly ok. What I mean is supposedly news shows, specially those with pundits. Outside of Jim Lehrer its very difficult to find a truly informative newscast. By informative I mean that they give you some background on the story, instead of just the "look here!" headline.
For example, in the Mexico story, they could have mentioned that policing operations have been taken by Federal Agents, that local police are ineffective and lots of them involved in crime, and that a similar operative took place last month in Michoacan. That would help you understand the context a little better. It does say that it's because there's an ongoing investigation but then doesn't explain that much.
I guess time demands that TV handles news a certain way, but the problem is that this way of covering news is expanding into other media that don't have the same constraints.

"If it bleeds, it leads." The reason that news is turning into entertainment, sensationalistic headlines, and screaming pundits is because that is what the ratings show that people respond to. Misbehaving celebrities, pedophiles, car chases, and talking-head soundbites reducing the real stories to catch phrases are what sell advertising. People are too busy these days to be able to sit down and really get in depth to the meaningful issues, so they want headlines and sound bites to feel like they are staying informed without having to invest their precious time in truly understanding the events that shape their world. Plus, the sensationalistic issues are typically the ones that feel removed from people's lives; the "stories" on the news often end up being exactly that, stories. What OJ or Brangelina or Mel Gibson or some creep living exiled in Bangkok are doing are entertaining because we don't feel like it could actually hurt us. Even crime stories tend to come out of rough neighborhoods or small towns, where the bulk of the TV audience doesn't live.

Since when did yellow journalism care about silly things like facts and reality.
