Passports, Please!

Now, we Americans, are required to show our passports if we fly back to the United States from other destinations in North America. But not if we drive, and not if we sail, nor if we walk. What in the world is this supposed to do but harass air travelers just a little more.
It certainly doesn't address the problem of illegal entry into the country.

from what I heard, in about a year, sailing and driving across the boarder will require passports as well.

Yep, pretty much. Just be glad you don't have to show your passport when corssing the George Washington Bridge between NY and NJ, or crossing the Mississippi.
It's really Bush's way to deal with the deficit. A Passport costs about $100, so if everyone in the US is required to get one, okay, maybe just the adults, that's several hundred million times one hundred, that's ... uhm ... anyone got some extra fingers and toes?

Since Canadians are now required to show passports to enter your damned country, I think the reverse should be true. NO MAPLE SYRUP FOR YOU!
Damn! I knew there was a reason that we should have left Canada alone. I just didn't realize it was so pervasive. Just the thought of Waffle House without maple syrup makes me shudder.

Yes - whether we fly, drive, sail, or walk into the US - we need a bloody passport, so what's good for the goose and all that. Stoopid populists and all the silly fears they play on, they'd happily create a shut-in nation if they thought it'd translate into votes.

This is an excuse for the government to take more of our money. Plain and simple. It won't solve illegal immigration because the brass of America doesn't want it to be solved. And it certainly won't help out security. Nope. Common sense should enhance security, but we're fresh out of that, too.
What the hell's next, we need a passport to visit Alaska and Hawaii? California? Any rich part of the country? I should write a book about that or something...

We don't want any hair-lickers crossing our sacred borders!
Just the Bush Administratoin's way of dealing with the deficit. Figure 200,000,000 people at 100 dollars each, that's 20 billion bucks right there!

Right, because you can obtain fake birth certificates or driver's licenses, but not passports.

Well, I have to show a passport to travel from Germany to France by plane, but not by car or if I walk.
That's curious. Why do you suppose that is?

You do not. Both are members of Schengen, which generally means there are no internal passport checks between Schengen countries.
HOWEVER, airlines (even domestic flights) require identity for security reasons. Maybe for American citizens, these means their passport as I don't believe you have a national identity card. For instance, I as a Swedish citizen on the same journey with an airline could use my driving licence or national ID card in place of my passport.
That's curious. Why do you suppose that is?Because you usually show passports when travelling by plane for security reasons. Due to the Schengen treaty, I don't have to do so when travelling to another EU country, since I'm an EU citizen. They still have random checks, but that's it. There are checkpoints on the borders to non-EU countries, and also at airports.

I'd like to see how the requirements for airline security differ from any other mode of transportation. I suspect that, like in the U.S., the ID check is more for the airline, than for the government. Here, the ID check is solely to make sure that one has not sold his ticket to another, thus depriving the airline of a chance to sell another ticket.

My national ID card works quite well as a passport in most situations anyway, so I didn't mention that. I haven't tried using my driver's license, so I don't know if it's valid.

It's not, at least not with HLX (that's the airline sorta thing I usually fly to Schengen countries with); they only accept passport or Perso (national ID card). What bugs me more are the rulings on how long it has to be valid after your return to your home country, and how these differ from country to country.

well, considering that many people now think that HAWAII isn't part of the U.S...
Sadly there's actually talk about making passports a requirement for entering the contental US from Hawai'i or Alaska by air being that many visitors stop by Hawai'i first and then meander to the rest of the US.
Why the passport check in Hawai'i isn't good enough I don't know, but there you are.
Oh, and Myrmidonisia, you DO know that over half of the illegals in the US enter in on a valid passport and tempory visa and just over stay don't you?

When the governor of New Mexico - not Richardson, I think his predecessor - tried to get tickets for the Atlanta Olympics ten or so years ago, the operator said they couldn't send tickets outside the US. This is why New Mexico's license plates say "USA" on them. Or so I heard.

So you're complaining that you need to use your passport to get into your country?
...
America is weird.
[Edit]
When you leave your home, you take your house keys. To get back in, you use your house keys.
While you're gone, people can still pick the lock or kick your door down... but for some reason it seems perfectly normal for you to lock your house.

But that leaves a substantial number that don't use a passport and visa. Particularly those that enter from the southern border.
Passports for just $100.00, I wish. The $100 is just for starters add between $10-$15 for the passport photos and another $20-$30 for any local processing fee. If you need to get it within a reasonable time then add another $62. I know these numbers are true because I just ordered one for my trip in March.
What really hurts is that the two airline tickets I purchased to Bermuda where cheaper then the two passports we had to get.
