I am very much against media censorship but..
he may be gulty.. or may not.
he should be charged.. and the normal criminal investigation followed.
but .. the thing is he is a public figure.. even if he is found not guilty.. his life is gone to hell .
the temporary ban should last only until the veridict is out.

What you're talking about is not censorship per se but rather a publication ban, which is typical in cases like this, as it helps to ensure a neutral jury in the matter. This is a serious criminal charge and if the media is having a feeding frenzy with it, this will wind up being trial by media and it'll be hard to prove that this person is innocent of all charges, even if the evidence is lacking. The publican ban also protects the victim as much as it does the accused. It's not a way for the accused to escape the crime, so much as to ensure that there isn't undue influence in the jury pool, potentially tainting it with false information.
Um...suppose this is the only way they could've gotten word out, because the government was not acting on the accusations?

First, it's not "censure." It's "censorship."
Second, why should he receive special treatment because he's a public figure? If Joe Blow the janitor were accused of the same crimes, his life would be fucked, too.
Um...suppose this is the only way they could've gotten word out, because the government was not acting on the accusations?
These are criminal charges...even if the government acted, that would not negate the need to deal with the issue in the courts.

And OD2 somehow thinks a conviction is going to be a blow against Israel?
The real power is with the Prime Minister and Olmert is still going strong.

true.. this should apply to all.
..Public fugures are more likely to be framed/conspired/ransom etc.
but I agree with you.

No, no. That's not what I meant. What I meant was if the person filed charges, but the charges were ignored/"disappeared", so he/she went to the press instead?

that is why my proposed "procedure" has 2 steps.
#1 do charge the accused.. do the normal criminal investigation.
#2 automatic publication ban.. until veridict is out.

Do you have any evidence of this?
What I mean is, the second charges were filed, the press would have been all over it, unless you are suggesting that the press itself is so seriously curtailed there.

Or hey, you could opt for a secret trial...like the Airbus debacle that got leaked to the Canadian press...

More evidence of the total moral bankruptcy of the Israeli government.
More evidence of the total moral bankruptcy of the Israeli government.
Actually, it is only a suggestion that a particular politician may have behaved criminally in his personal life.
You fail at evidence.

but.. even if I do not like the Israeli gov.. (any NS veteran knows this).
the country/origin/race of the accused is irrelevant.

But apparently, whether or not the accused is a politican or some other public figure is, and they deserve special treatment. Riiiight...

But apparently, whether or not the accused is a politican or some other public figure is, and they deserve special treatment. Riiiight...Actually one of the main arguments I was hearing during the time the investigations were going on and the police recommended indicting Katzav was that he was to be treated specially because he was president. While normal people deserved to be innocent until proven guilty, Israeli MPs were saying that this couldn't apply to the office of the represantative of the State of Israel and that he should step down before tainting the office with the public debate.

There's a difference between wanting the guy to step down and wanting to muzzle the media.

Doesn't this strike anyone else as hilariously funny?
I suppose the only way to logically and sensibly solve this is to have Condoleeza Rice mud wrestle Margaret Thatchet in the nude in Kazakhstan with Borat as the commentator.
