When higher-tech isn't necessarily a good thing

Sometimes, it seems, progress isn't really a good thing (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/22/business/media/22porn.html?ref=technology)
Pornography has long helped drive the adoption of new technology, from the printing press to the videocassette. Now pornographic movie studios are staying ahead of the curve by releasing high-definition DVDs.
They have discovered that the technology is sometimes not so sexy. The high-definition format is accentuating imperfections in the actors — from a little extra cellulite on a leg to wrinkles around the eyes.
Hollywood is dealing with similar problems, but they are more pronounced for pornographers, who rely on close-ups and who, because of their quick adoption of the new format, are facing the issue more immediately than mainstream entertainment companies.
Producers are taking steps to hide the imperfections. Some shots are lit differently, while some actors simply are not shot at certain angles, or are getting cosmetic surgery, or seeking expert grooming.
“The biggest problem is razor burn,” said Stormy Daniels, an actress, writer and director.
Ms. Daniels is also a skeptic. “I’m not 100 percent sure why anyone would want to see their porn in HD,” she said.

Video Airbrushing FTW!
Yeah, the article mentions that. It also mentions that Sony's being stupid again and not copying porn DVDs in Blu-Ray, thereby ceding the huge porn market to HD-DVD. Do they want to be the dominant format in Hi-Def or not?

It's as if Betamax never happened!
I don't think the visible imperfections will really be a problem; they're already visible in still pictures, which're generally much higher resolution than normal video/DVD.

But still pictures are a lot easier and cheaper to touch up. Do you really think that the average porn picture is not photoshopped?

In magazines? Yes, undoubtedly.
Free porn on the net? Some is, some ain't.
User-submitted porn on the net? Very unlikely indeed.

Maybe it'll make it easy to tell which ones are women and which ones are transexuals.
My condolences to whoever finds it harder because they notice the girl has a slightly uneven eyebrows.

Sorry, for all those who think I'm weird I was punning on the 'finds it harder' bit. Couldn't resist.

Then he was not a REAL MAN. I, personally, would have done the report while doing some pornstar across my newsdesk.

But with this drawback, will the porn market be able to tip the balance in the new format wars?

Just release it in .avi format and solve the war forever!

Well, it's all over then. Porn forces adaptation. That's gotta be the dumbest thing ever.
I actually didn't think of it, but I wonder if Panasonic has made the porn HD revolution come around-it's a $6,000 HD camera when previously you had to buy a $65,000 camera. Garage filmmakers have been flipping out over that thing (well, it is pretty cool...but you have to have an assistant editor on the set to download the P2 cards as you shoot, and those cards are expensive and don't hold much footage.)

Why would anyone want that in HD in the first place??

The only thing I can figure is that they're imagining that the PS-3 demand will make up the difference, but that's just wishful thinking. If I were a major stockholder, I'd be kicking some Sony Chairman ass right about now.

How many formats must Sony lose at before they learn? I mean, seriously? There is the famous bail on betamax, MiniDiscs, now Blu-Ray. There is no way in hell the PS3 will even hope to match the pull of porn...
...I really didn't mean to make that pun...

maybe if they could have provided adequate numbers of the ps3 at a more reasonable price...
but then it would ruin the market for standalone bluray players that cost more than a ps3 now.
they are just fucked.

The other day my friend was tellign me about his new 5000" (not really) HD DLP TV and how, when watching football in HD for instance, you could see the stitches on players clothing, the color of their eyes and even individual blades of grass in great detail. I can't believe I didn't think of this at the time!!!!!!!
I am very dissapointed in myself but am glad that people are getting to experience HD cellulite.

EDIT: Not that it makes a difference. As long as the script is solid and the acting is convincing.

Come on. THis is a non-story. By the time they come (sorry about the pun) to the close-up finales, most of the target audience eyes are half-closed with vision blurred.
It could be a mating elephant on-screen and they wouldn't be able to see the difference.

the hair will hide some of the imperfections, and you can have fun styling the hair for more effective shots.

when a woman undresses infront of a man, that man is just grateful.

of course to make it fair you have to assume at least 3 takes to get all the camera angles, and 3 re-tries...
all while strangers are in the room watching you.

It's worrying enough that Blu-Ray has DRM.
Add to that that they're a major publisher/content owner.
(Think Fox News trying to corner the market in TV licenses, or printing presses.)
And at this critical point in the format war, they make it clear that they intend to decide what can and what cannot be published on their media. SONY/BMG :mp5:
