Your Country's Monetary Habits?

What are some of the monetary habits of people in your country?

I ask because I'm playing Londinivm, and am a Bard, which means I get to steal from people. When you steal from people, you have the chance to shout something at them as you run away. I've thought of something funny to shout, but don't know if it would make sense to someone from somewhere else.

In the U.S., when we have coins, we sometimes will put them into little sleeves of paper, to make them easier to exchange. 40 Quarters, for instance, will be put into one of these, called a roll, and exchanged for $10 at the bank or some other place. Do people from other countries also roll their coins? Do people tend do anything unique? Store their money in their shoes instead of their wallets? Collect it, as a decoration?

They have rolls in Germany too, but these are unlikely to be used by normal people. They're almost only found in banks or in stores.

But there are peculiarities. Germans were called up to start spending small change because the stores were running out shortly after the Euro was introduced. Thrifty, thrifty :p

I've seen that some people like to collect 10 kronor coins (http://gallery.hd.org/_exhibits/money/_more2000/_more04/Sweden-coins-10-5-Kronor-50-oere-silver-copper-gold-colours-SEK-1-DHD.jpg) in metallic tubes (approximately 1 metre in hight) with slots at the top for dropping them in. They tend to bug you for them, it's like a magpie obsession for the shiny, golden coin.

We have change shortages here too. It's hard to spend change becasue you have to remember to carry it with you. I have like $50 rolled up and I keep trying to spend a bit of it whenever I go to a store.

What's your Londinivm name? I play it too and it's a bit fun for it's simplicity. MY username is juvanya.

this reminded me of a day when I was......less patient than I am now.

I was on my way to work, and needed gas, just $10 worth, so I got into my piggy bank and rolled up some quarters, and took them to the local 7-11 thinking that they would be happy that I took the time to organize the money for them instead of bringing it in a Ziplock (TM) bag.

I was wrong.

"we can't accept rolled coins"
"why not?"
"because we can't count them"
"oh, fine"
*cut to Smunkee unrolling the quarters and dumping them on the counter*
"we can't accept that many quarters"
"why not?"
"they will take up too much room in the register and I can't drop them, and it would take too long to roll them"
"you are fucking kidding me right?"
"no"
This is where I actually start seeing red........after that? I don't remember much else, I think I might have been high.......the cops showed up. I patiently explained the situation to the big scary police man, who gave the lady a $10 bill and took my quarters and put them in his pocket, he then escorted me out the door, put me in my car, and pumped my gas for me.......I was an hour late to work and got fired. :(

I hate 7-11.

I hate 7-11.

But they have SLURPEES! You have to forgive them. IT's a franchise, some are bound to be mean. The ones here...well one of the three in the 5-mile radius has these Indian guys who always abg on my dad and once me...one of them gave me a mop and said "here clean!" or something. But they are quite amusing.

I assume you work?

IRL, no. :(

On Londinivm, I do my 30 employment points everyday and am up to...actually I don't really work. ;) You sitll have to catch me and you can't have 86400 windows or tabs that will get me every second of the day...

if you in world two i can't

I haven't really tried world 2 yet...

...next time just tell them that you have no other method of payment with you.

Once the gas is pumped they are required by law to accept your form of payment, regardless of what that method of payment is...even pennies.

You can also gently remind them that change, like bills, is legal currency good for all debts public and private, and if they acknowledge that there is no debt on your part, you'll be happy to drive off with their gas for free.

Idiots who strictly adhere to company policy aren't worth getting frustrated over...but it is fun to confuse and bewilder them! :D

A debt is only incurred for a service, they are not providing a service and do not have to accept everything. They can only accept slices of bread if they so wish. Have you ever been to a store and they said "We do not accept bills over $20."? That is perfectly legal as they are never you are never in debt to them.

There being no other federal law prohibiting private businesses, persons or organizations from specifying other methods of payment they choose to accept or refuse, such entitites therefore are free to insist on payment by credit card, for example, or to refuse larger denomination banknotes. Some small stores in the United States have a policy of not accepting large notes, typically above $20, either at all or at certain times of day; this allows them to keep fairly small quantities of money in the register and deter robbery, and also serves to limit one's risk of accepting counterfeit notes.

Have a nice day. :p

the monetary habits of the british tend to be getting into loads of debt, then getting more credit cards to pay it off.

Around here its quite normal for people to buy things in parts. You know, unlike paying everything at one time, you pay it in 3, 4, somethines every 72 parts :p

It goes like this: You want to buy an apartment. Its $60.000.

You pay an entrance of $10.000 and then you pay the 50.000 left in dozens of parts. Like $500/month.

There are people that buy an apartment and take 10 years to pay it.

People buy like this all the time. The problem is that if you do that, you usually end up paying two times what it would cost if you bought it at once.
