Thumpers vs. Bashers

Okay, I've only ever seen this on this forum and it has me confused.

Everywhere I go, the term Bible-basher is used to describe someone who is trying to disprove the Bible, make it less important, etc. They're trying to attack the Bible.

And Bible-thumper is used to descibe someone who goes to the Bible for everything. Like when the preacher stands up and has a Bible in his hand, screaming hell-fire and damnation from the pulpit. And all the while he's pointing to the Bible and he's continued, frantic tapping against it makes a thumping sound. So, they're trying to support Scripture.

But I've never seen Bible-thumper used here, and I always see Bible-basher used in its place. Why?

around here the phrase "Bible-beater" is used, you know like they literally go around beating you over the head with a Bible.

Really? I haven't heard that one.

Are you referring to NSG here?
Or Oklahoma (I think that's where you said you live) here?

But, that makes sense, too, more than Bible-bashers.

Pie Iesu Domine. Dona Eis Requiem.

And for those of us who don't speak Latin (at least it looks like Latin to me)?

It's odd, there actually isn't as much difference between the two as you might think... both are close-minded and dogmatic, both seem uncannily obsessed with either proving (as in the Bible-thumpers) or disproving (as in the Bible-bashers) the truthfulness of stories that are really meant to be taken metaphorically. I'm not religious but I think both kinds are annoying.

:headbang:

Now imagine that wall is the Bible and you get the idea.

Sweet lord Jesus grant them rest. It's from the requiem or something.

Thank you.

they are often interchangeable, but the usage you've come across elsewhere is probably more correct. their interchangeability is probably simply down to people just getting mixed up.

It's what the monks in Monty Python are chanting while they hit their faces with the boards they carry. And now it's not funny anymore, since you made me explain it.

Well, I don't think Monty Python's funny to begin with.

But, I apologize for ruining it for everyone else.

Did anyone else, upon seeing the thread title, "Thumpers or Bashers" immediately think it was refering to masturbation?

Or is it just me that thinks this way?

Bible bashers are people who are overzealous about attacking the Bible, and Bible thumpers are people who use the Bible for their own ends.
