Aunt Dubsy!
Congratulations, auntie! :fluffle: :fluffle: :fluffle: :fluffle: :fluffle: :fluffle:
You're gonna be a fun aunt, have a good time :)
Oh, and I have a niece myself.
EDIT: Time warp strikes again. Sorry Dubsy.
Hey you! The OP is below. Go read there. Go go go
Is anyone else on NSG an aunt or uncle? When did you first become one? Does anyone have any brilliant ideas for gifts for the baby? Who is your favorite kid? Anything really, to do with babies, or being an aunt or uncle, or kids, or family, post here!No such luck. I'm the eldest child in the family. But I did get a chance to see my cousin's daughters.
My brother's wife went into labor this morning, so sometime tonight or tomorrow I will officially be an aunt. We don't know yet if I will have a niece or nephew, but I am very excited.

It isn't that exciting of a present, but start them a 529 education IRA....you can go thru lots of different companies, can put in like $25 a month, and when they turn 18, they will have their college mostly paid for, with minimal pain to yourself...you will be a hero.....

So what? I'm about to become a nephew! That's right, my grandmother is pregnant again! :)

I became godfather to my mates lil boy.. that's kinda the same thing..
As a college student myself, I definitely see the brilliance in that. Although, as a college student, not sure if I can afford $25 a month. Still that is a brilliant idea. Good looking!
plus, if you do one of those education IRAs, other people can contribute too, like Grandmas, the parents, etc...... and if the kid is a genius (or an idiot for that matter) and doesnt end up needing the money for college, you can buy yourself a bass boat..

ohmigosh, me too! I only just turned 20, and now I feel like I'm as old as my aunts, if that makes any sense. I mean, I've babysat plenty of kids, but I've never had a generation below me. I used to be the youngest generation in my family. Not any more! It's okay tho.

Being an aunt or uncle is great. You can fuss over your sib's kids, indulge them, spoil them, stuff 'em full of candy - and then you can go home, secure in knowing you won't have to change 'em, and/or put 'em to bed. My personal favourite is to buy 'em the singlemost annoying electronic toy I can find - preferably something like a teddy bear who sings snippets of pop songs in a shrill falsetto.

there is no such thing as a present for a new baby. new babies need nothing. its the parents who need stuff.
if you live close enough then sometime in the next 2 weeks go over in the middle of the afternoon to watch the baby while whichever parent is at home gets some real sleep. if the baby sleeps during that time, clean the house and start dinner for the family.
repeat often.

It is indeed. I don't know yet who the godparents will be, but I told my sister in law not to worry about not picking me. There are a total of five aunts that this kid is going to have, so clearly not everyone will get to be a godmother. Plus she has her friends, and so forth. Besides, I'm not a very good catholic.
Congrats on being the godfather tho! My godfather just died :( But he was old and sick, and it was his time. How long have you been a godfather for?

Interestingly, it wasnt the oldest in my family who was the first to have kids. It was the second of five. He's 23 tho, so he is not that young to be a father. The oldest is married too, and has been married longer, but he and his wife say they don't want kids yet.

LoL, genius! Altho, I think my brother wants to have 6 kids, and his wife says she won't have more than 4 labors. So, if the kid turns out a genius (which is waaaay more likely, given his genes. my brother is lazy as hell, but ridiculously smart) I'll probably just save it for the next one.

:D My dad hated it when his brothers did that. He said when his brother had a kid, he was going to buy the kid whatever toy had the most small pieces, so he'd understand what it was like to trip on them while trying to make his way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
My uncle also told my brothers that a really good joke would be to lie on the floor next time they were in the grocery store and start screaming and crying, yelling "Don't beat me anymore Daddy!! Please, I promise I'll be good!! Just don't hit me!" My father was less than amused with this idea, but I dont think the boys ever did it :p
I think I'll save the terrible toy for the next time my brother says something mean to me, and use it as sweet revenge. *grins maniacally*

They are living with his wife's mother, since her father is overseas, and her mother has a large house all to herself. Therefore, I think they will probably be slightly better than if it were just my brother's wife with the baby. However, I live in DC and they are in Virginia, and I have Wednesday's off school, so I could easily take the Virginia rail down and give them the afternoon off. I think this is a rather genius idea, actually. After all, Oma (as the new grandmother wants to be called) will need a rest too.

I am indeed. WC is European for bathroom, so most people call me Dubsy (like Double-U C, or DubC).
What do boys do when they play with Hot Wheels? I used to play with my brothers' toy cars, but I played with them like they were Barbies. (There was a daddy car, mommy car, and baby cars. I was a weird kid.)
I dont even know if this stinker will be a boy or girl. But either way, I have a whole list of toys in my mind that I'd want to get for the kid. I remember being a girl, and I've babysat plenty of boys of all ages, so I have a generally idea of what goes over well.

It depends. I went with the traditional methods:
Speed Racer style races with impossible match ups in race courses I would usually design by draging my foot in the dirt in more or less random pattern.
Stunt shows, either fast motion (pushing or throwing the cars off something) or slow motion, where I'd move the cars through the stunt.
Chase scene (stunt show with a half assed story line).
Occasionally, a cruise when I got a particularly pimp ride, like my Stutz lowrider.
My brother was an odd cat and would line his up and do sales man pitches like the used car dealers on TV.
And of course there are track sets that you never use as directed, unless you're a nerd...
The mommy/daddy/baby car thing is adorable, though. In a way that would force me to ridicule you if we where kids on a playground, however...

it will give you a good chance to develop a close relationship to your neice/nephew too. its a great thing to be a favorite aunt. there is nothing like having a small child be excited just because you showed up or having a teen in crisis turn to you because s/he knows you are cool enough to deal with whatever it is.

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And Id like to take a minute just sit right there
Ill tell you how I became the prince of a town called DC
In west philadelfia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys said were up in no good
Started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said youre moving with your aunte in DC
I begged and pleaded with her the other day
But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way
She gave me a kissin and she gave me my ticket
I put my walkman on and said I might aswell kick it
First class, yo this is bad,
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass
Is this what the people of DC livin like,
Hmm this might be alright!
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
Licensplate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to DC
I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby yo, home smell you later
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To settle my throne as the prince of DC

We always used to loose the clothes to our barbies, and then my big brother would be in highschool, driving his friends home and they'd ask him why his car had naked barbies in the glove compartment. My bro got so pissed he said the next naked barbie he saw he was fonna rip off its head. Yep. My nephew Miles was born August 4th, 2005 - 9 lbs, 11 oz and 21.5 inches.
First time I met him was at Xmas 2005. He was still so young he didn'tt really do much, but my SIL told me I was the first person for whom he didn't cry when first holding him. :D
This past Xmas was much more fun, as he's up walking, talking (in the four weeks while I was home, he went from saying "ba" to "ball" and from "pe" to "ple" to "ples" <please>), and getting into mischief (TPing the living room And trying to find out which pots and pans made the biggest noise, among other things ;)).
And I'm looking forward to the many uncle-ish responsibilities my brother has laid upon me - I was dubbed the person responsible for introducing "pull my finger", dirty jokes, good cigars and beer, and other related things.
As for gifts, for right now, I'll second Gravlen's suggestions. This Xmas, I gave Miles a bunch of cool gifts, but the best one (the one my brother declared the overall most popular) was a simple set of rubber balls. He enjoyed the drum, but it didn't bother my brother in the least. I have to try harder in August!

Wohoo!
