By way of a bronze statue of a confident woman apparentally.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Amsterdam's red-light district will soon get a new attraction: a statue to honor prostitutes around the world.

The statue, designed by artist Els Rijerse, will likely be unveiled at the end of March, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

"In many countries, prostitutes struggle and people have no respect for them whatsoever. The statue is meant to give all those men and women strength," Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who commissioned the statue, told ANP.

ANP said the statue, made of bronze, shows a woman who confidently looks out into the world.

So, two questions, first, was I actually the first to post this? And second, what do you all think?

With a stack of textbooks at the feet. The student will be dressed in a month-old t-shirt and pyjama bottoms and the hair will depending on gender either be tied in a lazy pony-tail, or messy and down, and the extent to which they are unshaven too will depend on gender. :D

That is amazing. Of course, its much more of a political estatement instead of an actual honor.

BTW, whores give a lot of money to the gov in way of taxes.

Oh, and I hope the statue is naked.

Where does it say the government is doing this? From what I've read in the article, it would seem that it's a private comission.

I daresay it is motivated by a desire to be seen as "liberal" and "progressuve", however I can't deny my being amused.

In any case, where would the middle classes be without prostitutes?

AFAIK, the gov has to aprove every statue. Otherwise I could make a statue of myself and just put it in my street.

And, as said, its more of a a way to say how liberal and advanced Amsterdam is by honoring a job which is pretty much despised everywhere else in the world by some of the population.

Good for them. I don't mind it at all, but I really don't care that much about statues either :)

Its just another job, I don't see why they need to be honoured
Because it's not "just another job" for many prostitutes? Because of the abuse and desperation that is connected with the profession? Because of the lack of respect, hypocracy and outright hostility that many prostitutes suffer daily? Maybe?
I demand students be given a statue honouring us.

Then again, there's already a small fountain in the shape of an erect penis in the Red Light District in Amsterdam, so I can't imagine the statue being that much of a shocker, even if it is naked.

We honour plenty of other jobs...you don't see "Lifetime Achievement Award" for prostitutes though, do you? But you do see them for teachers, doctors, etc etc etc. They need to be honoured because traditionally, they are anything but.
