Confused about Silent Hill

Ok, so I rented Silent Hill and watched it tonight, it was a great thriller. However I am confused about the ending, I mean Rose and Sharon was able to help Alessa wreck revenge upon those who condemned her, shouldn't they get to go back home? Can anyone help me figure out the ending? I have a theory that when the SUV crashed, they and the officer died and they are in purgatory. But that's just the Catholic in me lol.
It was based on the SH series of games. Read the wikipedia article about it.

I was under the impression that the whole Silent Hill Rose and Sharon were in after their car crash the first time was an alternate dimension or reality of sorts, because Chris and Sharon were seen at the same places and the same times in SH, yet were unable to see and talk to each other.
It kinda gets explained by Alessa that the evil Silent Hill 'reality' was created by her darkest dreams in order to punish whose who treated her so badly. In the movie Alessa is almost portrayed as a victim almost of the Puritans, in the game it's played with that she maybe a an Evil God in the form of a child.
I really didn't get the ending of the film, even after they left SH and came to Chris's house it seemed they were still stuck in the evil reality, but you maybe right that they died leaving SH in the car crash.

Sorry, I went to see it in the cinema and thought it was the the worst I'd seen (at the cinema), until I saw Babel last night.

It could have been good, if they'd pulled a Hellbound and abandoned all this silly "plot"-nonsense and just shown more people getting ripped to shreds by barbed wire or having their skin torn off.
And that guy in the toilet stall, he was cool.

They're dead. The SUV crashed and if you look at the end when she is driving home, there's a hole in the guardrail where the cop and her bike flew through.

It's revealed that Alessa brought Rose, Sharon and Cybil to "the other side." in this Shadow world, Alessa was seeking revenge on those that hurt her. (revealed at the end, the flashback scene. the one where everything gets sucked into the hospital bed.)
However, after Alessa gets her revenge, she never sends them (Rose and Sharon) back. So the movie ends with Rose and Sharon in "the Shadow World" alone but together.
Why didn't Demonic Alessa send them back? Alessa is evil. she got what wanted, revenge. Gratitude isn't in her.

the bike was lying on it's side on the road. She looks at it as they're driving off.
and there is no mention of a "body" being found. They found the SUV, but no body.

I read on IMDB that the bit with Sharon opening her eyes and seeing Alessa, then passing out was where she made a new pact with a demon. See, the real was the bandaged up girl that controlled the barbed wires and massacred everyone in the church. The Alessa that wore the school uniform was a demon that Alessa's suffering brought into existence. So when Sharon made the pact with it, she trapped her and Rose in the alternate reality but saved their lives. Kinda. I think.
It needed more Pyramid Head.
Silent Hill stayed true to the game by keeping the ending...well, confusing but you could interperate that as open. I liked it very much.
Anytime I hear one of those sirens I hear: "We are too far from refuge!" :D

The stupid effects at the end were the worst part of the film. Things arent scary when they turn out to be lame CG, just look at Alien Resurrection.

That could be. After all, Sharon was supposed to be the "good" that was left in Alessa. with the demon "gone" after Alessa's revenge was satified, "Sharon" may not have exsisted anymore. so you have Alessa living/reliving her childhood with Two mothers.
I like the commentary when they Auditioned the litte girl who plays Alessa/Sharon.... :D

Yeah that sounds about right, because I remember when she was talking to the school girl Alessa she identified herself, saying 'I am the dark side of Alessa'.

Ah, I enjoyed Silent Hill - I mean, it's fluff horror, but that's fun from time to time. :-D
Call it a guilty pleasure, except I'm not really feeling all that guilty about it. Oh... ok, I liked Resident Evil movie as well and I do feel a little more guilty over that one.
My own (non-game) interpretation? Simple... they're dead and they're ghosties.
The mother and child did not crack up the SUV, but were overcome by fumes (hey, the air and conditions in the town are very unpredictable - it's easily possible they died of exposure to nasty gasses there). The cop did crack up the motorcycle and died in the crash. Welcome to the shadow world.

1. Where did the bodies go?
2. How did she talk to her husband on the phone?
3. Wasn't the gases, the detective and the husband wandered through the town as well.
