MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - The last major warlord to withhold support from Somalia's government surrendered his weapons and militiamen on Saturday - a boost for a fledgling leadership that still faces threats of guerrilla attacks from the Islamic movement that fled the capital.

Mohamed Dheere, one of the most feared warlords in Somalia, gave the army chief 23 trucks mounted with heavy weapons and ordered 220 of his fighters to report for training at government camps. The handover took place during a ceremony in Dheere's stronghold of Jowhar, 50 miles north of the capital of Mogadishu, said Abdirahman Dinari, the government spokesman.

But fears of an Islamic fundamentalist insurgency grew following an ambush Saturday morning on a convoy of Ethiopian troops in Mogadishu. The Ethiopians returned fire, killing a man and a woman on the side of the road, said Hawa Malin, a Mogadishu resident who saw the attack. Two other people died on the way to the hospital, medical officials said.

Late Friday, government troops also repelled an attack on the Somali president's palace. There were no reports of casualties.

A leader in Somalia's Council of Islamic Courts said his group was responsible for the attacks, calling it part of a "new uprising by the Somali people."

"The only solution can be reconciliation and talks between the transitional federal government and the Islamic courts," said Ahmed Qare, deputy chairman of the council.

The U.N.-backed government - with key military backing from Ethiopia - drove the Islamic movement that had challenged it out of Mogadishu and much of the rest of southern Somalia weeks ago. But Islamic leaders have repeatedly threatened a guerrilla war as long as Ethiopian troops remain in Somalia to support the government.

The United States and the European Union have called on the government to hold broad-based peace talks to promote reconciliation, but so far only clan leaders and warlords have been involved in the process and religious leaders have been excluded.

The government has asked African peacekeepers to maintain security in the country, but they are unlikely to come if fighting continues. African Union officials approved an 8,000-peacekeeper mission on Friday, but only Uganda has volunteered troops thus far.

Somalia has not had an effective central government since 1991 when warlords overthrew longtime dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and then turned on each other, reducing the Horn of Africa nation to anarchy and clan-based violence.

It seems that fear of the Islamic courts has caused the Warlords to believe in safety in numbers. Meaning that they are supporting the new government.

This is relativtly good news, while I'm sure the Warlords have more than just that, the fact that they're sending soldiers and equipment to the new government means that they want them to win.

It seems that Somalia is closer to being an actual nation again.

looks more like the warlords are using the flag of Somalia to get Ethiopian support

I predict anarchy to be restored :)

Interesting.

Also interesting is the fact the media never mention the Somaliland issue. That may turn nasty is Somalia tries to annex Somaliland. Which I hope they'll have the good sense not to.

When the whole issue began I really thought the Ethiopians would have a hard time completing the mission. But they did so within a week and quite successfully.

Perhaps we can acquire some of their fighting skills to fend off terrorists elsewhere?

Maybe I can go to Wal-Mart and buy that shower curtain I like.

We did the same with Iraq, remember? (Well not within a week, but we did pretty much dominate the actual invasion, my point is the Ethiopians still have to occupy the country which has been demonstrated to be very difficult.

Agreed. Somaliland is a really promising little place. Unfortunately Somalia will just read the first 6 letters of its name and decide its theirs to claim.

I'm hoping President Yusuf will want to avoid a war.

It would be absurd to want to force Somaliland (a peaceful, stable, democratic country) into chaotic Somalia.

No they don't. They don't have the same moral standards as Western nations. Its perfectly acceptable for the Ethiopian people and establishment to roll in there, crush all opposition, and roll out again. And then let their Somali puppets sort it out from there.

Even if he does, who can guarantee his successor won't? Returning Somalia to its pre-1994 borders would be propaganda triumph, and unless someone stands in to protect Somaliland it seems tragically inevitable.

Also lets not forget. People suspected of fighting the Islamic Courts were given a one way trip to the desert. Also if one hears of the battles, they were mostly small massacres on the side of the UIC forces who were pushed into the desert retreating and then attacked from the air on the open terrain where they were vulnerable.
The US holds itself to different standards then the "no prisoners" tactic that Ethiopia is employing at the moment. Hence it could potentially be easier for Ethiopia, and once the shit hits the fan, it gets its Somalian proxies to do the dirty work.

It's such a shame, Somalia will most likely soon slip back into perpetual chaos and anarchy at the hands of the US-paid warlords and Ethiopian invaders. It's also a shame the US would rather see the warlords and invaders, the greatest terrorists of them all, keep the killing up over letting the Islamic Courts set up some semblance of order and security in the capital. And the US will just stick it's hands in it's ears yelling lalalalala '9/11' lalalalalala 'terrorists' lalalalala 'al-quida' lalalala 'islamofascists' lalalalalala.

Shame.

IMO, the world should recognize Somaliland.

Ah, Somalia, gotta love it. They call trucks mounted with machine guns "technicals", and had to call state of emergency the 13th of January, cos they didn't know what else to call peace. I hope I can visit soon.

They are called "Technicals" supposedly because when the Red Cross had people doing human aid and stuff they paid warlords to 'protect' them using Pickup trucks with Machine guns on them.

They billed it as "Technical" Support. (Supposed True story)
