This student has been missing for a week now. I don't know what to make of it. I highly doubt he was a runaway.

I think one of 2 things happened to him. It was either foul play, but I do doubt that. I don't see a motive for it unless it was a sick predator.

The more likely one is that he was drunk. He probably wandered off into the woods west of the Phi Kap house where he was drinking. It was really cold last weekend so he may of frozen to death.

While the reports might say he wasn't drunk, I doubt that's the case. The Phi Kaps have a bad reputation on campus. They are really screwed here if the Steffey was rushing. The Purdue IFC forbids serving alcohol to rushees unless they've already accepted a bid.

I hope I'm wrong, but it just seems like the most likely occurance.

Sad to say, but

A) He had alcohol poisoning and his "boys" threw him off somewhere, in which case he is dead

B) Some sort of foul play
or
C) He was drunk, wandered off into the night, and is now face down in a creek or ditch:(

The Phi Kaps are bad, but I still wouldn't say they would do A. Now if we were talking about the Tekes at Purdue, then I could see it. The University has been trying to throw the Tekes off campus for 3 years now. They were able to tear down the house and now the fraternity is in an apartment block.

Wow, I can honestly say that none of the Frats here are so bad that they are removed from the campus. Although, Sig Chi does get rather wild, and has been involved with doing damage to an old ladies yard. She chased them off with a hose and a hammer. Ahhh. Good ol Macombie Homies :D

The Tekes got caught with 4 of their 5 E-board members selling crack out of their house.

Sigma Nu is also on probation now for having a pledge with a .49 BAC last Spring. I'm amazed the kid survived.

.49? Holy Crap. He must have pissed alcohol for like a week.

Did they have to pump his stomach or something?

I'm glad to say that the frats at Ohio State are extremely weak, unable to draw the high percentages of membership that other schools Greek life does. I guess that's what one might expect at a more down to earth, midwestern school, though.

Although the Sig-Eps seem to be decent enough folks. I wouldn't join up though.

Could someone explain the whole fraternity thing to an ignorant European? I've never seen anything like it here, and am kinda confused about the whole naming thing.

A frat is an organization in colleges for male students, it provides a community and a support system in exchange for money. Frats are notorious as places of extreme drinking, wild sex, and embarrassing initiation rites.

The names are greek letters.

Although Fraternities do exist outside of colleges, such as The Freemasons , Ordo Templi Orientis, or Rotary Club.

I think it's got to do with homosexuality being so popular in ancient Greece...

LOL. tOSU:p (stupid name and stupid school) has a really bad reputation in terms of it being a party school.

Purdue doesn't even get a reputation for being a major fraternity school. IU has a reputation as being either the #1 or #2 party school in the country.

I am in a fraternity. Mine is a more civilized one which had 0 hazing and where everyone isn't a heavy drinker (although some brothers are).

It's an American thing.

We kind of have it in Canada, but it's a more common practice on American university campuses.

May have, may have. Does "may of" make sense? Fuck no. It sounds like "may of" because it is abbreviated may'ave

I'm not in Uni, but the closest thing we have to a frat anywhere around where I live (in the UK) is Mach Shau, a little hardcore drinking group.

Yes, that's right, I'm in it.

I didn't care, even with all the superfluous jargon. Bye-bye, fratboy.

I'm in the Alpha kai Omega fraternity*. It's for all of us Gods to hang out and talk about ruling the universe in our different ways, and how to torture our creations next. (That Invisible Pink Unicorn is hawt...)

Fraternity: "A group of Brothers", from the Latin word Frater meaning Brother. Basically, in exchange for money and your commitment to the group, the group will provide support to it's members in emotional, educational, and social areas, and more rarely will provide housing, food, and scholorships to it's members. These organizations are more important after leaving a college setting, because the contacts a person makes in a fraternity can get them places in the working world.

That's pretty much it. 85% of all Fortune 500 executives are members of a fraternity. That's pretty amazing considering only 2% of the US population belongs to a fraternity.
