Reasons to thank NSG.

Go ahead and profess to hate it, but we all know at some undefinable point, you just can't leave it. We do a bit of reflection like this every so often, and now's as good a time as any to revisit the issue. Aside from (or maybe because of) the trollery, the flaming, the dogmatic fools...what reasons do you have to thank NSG?

For me, it's a couple of things, but I'll just start with this:

1) I've always admitted that I had a real anti-US bias, but one thing NS has allowed me to is interact with a lot of sane (sexy) and wonderful USians, and frankly, my opinion about the US has changed dramatically. Don't worry, I still hate your foreign policy, yanks...but I'm better able to appreciate the good things about the US because of some of you posting here. It may not seem like a big deal, but trust me...it is.

With any luck, this post will appear before yours.

I'm glad I met so many people here. Here's a shoutout to all my homies.

In other news, we're going to collide with the Andromeda galaxy. :(

Damn, apparently Jolt's flux capacitor has calmed down a bit.

And Andromeda is a few thousand kilometers closer. Make peace with your gods now, we have only 3 billion years left. 4 on the outside.

NSG has been a godsend for me. I love my little town out here in the middle of Japan, but there's only a handful of English speakers and two westerners (including me, and the other is Australian) in the town. NSG allows me to talk about events that are not interesting to my Japanese friends, or two difficult to explain in easy English.

That and arguments are considered high entertainment by my family and being in a culture that normally goes out of its way to AVOID conflict makes NSG the only place I've got to argue in. ;)

Thank you, NS General, for acting as the internet's anus. Let the shit pass through NSG and away from me, but let it remain here, floating, waiting for me to give an occasional, ashamed, glance.

Awash in some variety of feel-good hormone this evening Sin?

Anyway, cool. I'll take the opportunity to say that NS, you're more or less my internet home. NSG first exposed me to wit, vehemence, and inuendo like I'd never come across before anywhere. I've even grown more amenable to social spam over the years. Maybe that's a little understated. This place has stayed a sort of constant - lurking in interesting or merely embarrasing threads is one of a few ultimate and quiet passtimes I have - and I am pretty damn attatched to it, I admit freely. *nod*
NSG is pretty neat - at least I haven't come across a community that fit better. Though to be honest, I never looked. NS was the first forum I ever posted on, and it's just stuck since then. I'm not one of the deluded hordes that imagine they have the capability to leave, so I let it stick.

thanks to everyone for keeping up the good posting, and the forum's character. :fluffle:

Damn, apparently Jolt's flux capacitor has calmed down a bit.

I have two possible theories on that:

1. The traded appearences of Colbert and O'Reilly upon their respective shows caused a massive surge of temporal energy that somehow managed to destabilize Jolt causing all the apparent time shifting of posts.

2. Jolt's servers are just pieces of shit.

Truly, a mystery with no easy answer, just like finding the electric potential from an infinite line of positive charge.

I like NS cause it gives me something to do during the day. For the last two days, we've had exams and, due to my position, it's meant I've had nothing to do except sit staring at the computer from 8am to 4pm. Hence the amount of posts I've made recently.:)

Like Nevrun I'm teaching at a school where no-one, bar myself, is a native speaker. It can get a tad lonely and very boring here at times. You don't appreciate one's culture until you move out of it and every so often things pop up that drive home how alienating living overseas can be.
eg. the other day I had to a do a radio show during lunchtime at school. I figured I'd play it safe and put on 'Yellow Submarine' as introduction. The local teacher (a woman in her thirties) with me asked who sang it, as she had never heard the song before!
As nice as my colleagues are, there's just too big a gulf between us in terms of cultural references for me to be on little more than cogenial speaking terms with them.

Respect to those diligent aliens living on the Japanese mainland or elsewhere abroad... where abouts, by the way? Myself, I`m on the northernmost point of the island (Tsushima) closest to South Korea (hence, "Kami-" [above, top of] "-tsushima"). We do a bit of reflection like this every so often, and now's as good a time as any to revisit the issue. Aside from (or maybe because of) the trollery, the flaming, the dogmatic fools...what reasons do you have to thank NSG?

1. i "met" my girlfriend here and we've been going out for almost a year now :)

2. NSG was a friendly place when i needed some friends at university, going through badass double depression

3. NSG gives me a place to vent my political frustrations/anger

4. the people here are cool and friendly, and i love the social aspect of the forum, and the fact that regulars do really stick around :)

though its interesting you talk about this place changing your stance on america... cos it has for me too. just, not in the same way. before coming on here i was dead-set on living in San Francisco, but over time i've realised that most americans and i really don't see eye-to-eye on politics at all, or even the definition of 'freedom'. hence i don't think i'd be all that welcome over there and would find the business & political culture stifling to say the least (aggrivating, more like)

NSG was part of the reason I transformed, over two and a half years, from anarchist to free-market capitalist to semi-totalitarian meritocrat. I realised first that people were too inherently bad for anarchism to work, and then that they were too inherently stupid for democracy to work. :D

It's either timezones -- Sowibi's been doing it too (jolt's GMT+2 mirror is out of sync with its GMT-8 mirror, perhaps) or a confusion with the different servers: forums.jolt.co.uk, forums2.jolt.co.uk, forums3.jolt.co.uk, and forums4.jolt.co.uk. Which one are you using?

EDIT: I just tried posting on forums2. It appears to be set four minutes earlier than the regular forums.jolt.co.uk. This is therefore the root of the problem; everyone using forums2's posts will be timestamped four minutes earlier than those on the regular forums.

More so, forums2 is using the correct time, as my atomic clock-set computer displays the same time as forums2 whereas forums is set later; it is therefore the regular forums that are warped. Elementary, my dear Watson.

What's not to thank NSG for? You guys are wonderful. I love you all.
Case in point below. *nods*
I am thankful to NSG because it likes to feed my ego.
^^ Yep, right here. We shouldn't be thankful for NSG feeding Ruffy anything. :p

Hate it!? Why, perish the thought, old gal. ;)

Oh, and shall I take that as a compliment, then?:p

I would have to say it's the company I have found here. This group can certainly be an inspiring bunch. Or completely dumbfounding (in peculiar ways). But something about it is just appealing. That "Je ne sais quois."

:fluffle:

(yeah, they don't come often, but I'm trying to ween myself off my unhealthy and paternalistic disdain for smilies. They are useful, and they are not embarrasing adolescent susbstitutes for proper writing)

It was my first, too. Then I visited the Paradox Interactive forums, HOI 2. But it isn't the same, isn't as lively or inspiring. Though I do get to laugh at massive strategic blunders....Who ever heard of a transport sinking a heavy cruiser?:p

Something else NSG has done? Increased my tolerance of certain religious folks. This mostly happened pre-you, so by the time you came on I had stopped making assumptions about people based on their religion. Jocabia, and Dem, among others, showed me that religion doesn't necessarily mean backward, superstitious intolerance.

Let's see, what else am I thankful for...NSG gives me the opportunity to actually flesh out my thoughts and positions (although Vitt may still be confused as to what those positions are) and that has been invaluable in RL. Seriously. You should see me tear through people with my NSG training, screaming, "source!" and "n00b!" hahahahaha.

Another great thing about NSG? Generally I avoid people who have greatly different political beliefs than I, particularly if I really find those beliefs to be repugnant. Ok, I still do, when it comes to racists, homophobes etc...but I have managed to go beyond certain political beliefs of some of the posters here (opinions on capital punishment, capitalism etc) and appreciate their other quailties. So, we don't have to agree, but I can still get along with them. This has helped in RL too...maybe sounds obvious, but no.

And Spam. And spam. And Spam! And socialize. And get soppy and find funny cat pics. And offering a place where I can post this link (http://www.unbuffered.com/moskau.html)again and again without feeling bad or guilty about it at all.

And, did I mention steal my time? Even when I should be doing something useful? Pah! :p

But to quote some strange guy on the subway:

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light. My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim. I had to stop for the night. There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell. And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'. Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way. There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say... Welcome to the Hotel California, Such a lovely place - Such a lovely face, Plenty of room at the Hotel California, Any time of year, You can find it here. Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Benz, She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends. How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget. So I called up the Captain, 'Please bring me my wine'. He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine.' And still those voices are calling from far away, Wake you up in the middle of the night. Just to hear them say... Welcome to the Hotel California, Such a lovely place, Such a lovely face. They livin' it up at the Hotel California. What a nice surprise. Bring your alibis. Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice. And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device' And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast. They stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast. Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door. I had to find the passage back To the place I was before 'Relax,' said the night man, 'We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave!'

Have a good one ;)

I wouldn't quite know where to begin...

Thank you NSG for eating my time and wasting my precious moments which would have been wasted on something much more boring instead. All of the great people who make me smile and keep coming back to this wonderful pit of insanity, and giving me inspiration and release :)

And for giving me a venue to escape to when work gets boring, and for giving me a place to debate interesting topics.

And Spam. And spam.

Have a good one ;)

Thought I'd bring this thread back up, since here I am, stuck on NS again instead of cleaning up the disaster that is my home post party.

Thanks NS, for giving me the lame excuse I need to stop washing out empty wine bottles for an hour or two!

Edit: (why do we go through to trouble to clean our houses when we know they're going to be turned upside down anyway?)

My mom maintains that she doesn't mind a messy house as long as it is clean. I think that's an important distinction. Good point actually, and my kids have learned the difference between 'the house is messy' and 'the house is dirty'. Damn, back to the wine bottles it is.

More things to thank NS for.... it's a good sounding board for awkward questions or odd ideas I have on occasion.

It makes me wonder what great things shy or socially awkward people I know in RL have to say when they aren't feeling shy and socially awkward.
Exactly! I'll have to say, I have a lot more faith in my ability to find common ground EVEN WITH TEENAGERS *gasp!* than I ever did before. So I kind of seek out the loners every now and again and engage them, probably making them horribly uncomfortable, but nonetheless I think it's worth it with some of the gems they come up with...

This place is great. In real life, I'm not much of a talker, and don't voice my views a lot. But on here, you can't shut me up :)
Thankyou NSG, for bringing out the louder side in me.
Also, thankyou NSG for helping me NOT do my homework.

Thank you NSG for not having the same universally low-grade debate that 99% of the other forums in the world have.

Oh, and for having a wide variety of topics, not just politics.
