The Reason "Touched By An Angel" was cancelled.

Shit, how many seasons did Touched by an Angel air? Like 6 or something? Wiki says nine seasons. It was canceled because it was fucking old and losing ratings for being so damn old.

On the list of longest running shows, Touched by an Angel is #54.

Well, a couple of people at my church are of the opinion that it was canceled because "God" was said in every episode. Now, I'm fully aware that the chances of that being the truth are in fact, slim to none.

So my question--mainly because I want to be able to set them straight--is "why was it canceled then, if not for the use of "God"?"

I'm assuming it was a combination of low ratings, plus a no longer appealing profit potential that got it canceled.

Isn't it great when some Christians try to pretend that Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world?

I thought it was because the Angel was arrested for 'touching'.
"Now Timmy, can you show us exactly where the Angel touched you?"

Touched By An Angel was cancelled because it had a perverse agenda.

Now for my next question: What the fuck happened to this topic?

I guess it's just on my end, but my original post is underneath all of yours. And the timestamp claims that you all posted before me. Now all my posts are following each other in the right order, but they're all showing up at the end.

If "Touched by an Angel" is what I think it is, then I doubt you will find many people here who watched it.

Also, your fellow church members are suffering from that paradoxical persecution complex that American fundamentalist Christians are developing at exactly the same time they've been having the country in their stifling grip.
If there is anything that will get an American TV show cancelled on American TV, trust me, mentioning "God" isn't it.
If there is anything that can keep a crappy show on the air long after it's been dead and even reinstate it after it's been cancelled, trust me, it's mentioning "God".
The words "Seventh Heaven" mean anything to you?

No, it's the same for everyone. In other threads, too.

It's the biannual Time Warp Day jolt likes to have.

Hmmm... So it was cancelled because of a rant of a NSGeneralite...?

I thought it was cancelled because of it being an abomination to GOD.

Well, as long as it is cancelled, all is fine.

So then as a reply, would you endorse the following:

"Please don't tell me you believe that. The country is not persecuting Christians. In fact, it's the fanatical minority that is essentially controlling half of it! Seventh Heaven mentions God all the time and not only did it not get canceled for doing that, it was probably what saved the show on several occasions.

Really. If anyone is persecuting Christians, it's the fanatical minority of Christians."

Does that mean you're going to get cancelled too?:( ;)

On the list of longest running shows, Touched by an Angel is #54.

Said list is bjorked. No mention of Last Of The Summer Wine - running since 1973 with 259 episodes under its belt? Hardly a stellar amount, but a noticeable omission, nonetheless.

EDIT: or, for that matter, Neighbours at 5000+ episodes.

Oh, and the petition mentioned Number 2493 from the FCC. Which I found to not exist at all. So I think I'll add a line about that.

You're cracking me up. Are you really going to tell that to your fellow church members? Hats off to you then. :p

I would like to link you to some site posting "the official reason" it got cancelled so you would have black-on-white proof, but unfortunately TV channels aren't exactly in the habit of admitting "eh, this show has been going downhill for several seasons and finally people have caught on and stopped watching - and no target audience ratings mean no advertising mean no money mean cancellation."

But hey, have you tried to google it? Maybe you'll find something. IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/)is also a good place for info such as that when you read through the message boards.

Actually I just told them that 2493 doesn't exist. They're good friends of mine so I don't want to be blunt unless I have to be.

Small steps, small steps.

The show was quietly cancelled when the producers found out that Roma Downey was actually a man.

My family used to watch this show. I think it partially contributed to my disgust with religion in general. That's all it was, force-feeding Christianity down people's throats.

Though I do remember one episode where some T.V. show peeps discuss in the show making a show about angels. That is, I remember a line from it, something about the Angel of Death laughing maniacally as he kills someone or something like that.

Well it's a known fact the show was pushed into production and onto the air by an ultra-conservative Christian agenda. Kinda like a 'not as in your face and stupid as 700 hour, but still able to fit in as much evangelical garbage as possible without exploding' if you get me.

Angel is a good religious show if anyone is looking for one.:)

"This is a business of ratings," said co-star Della Reese of the show, which once ranked as TV's second-highest-rated drama, but now places 97th among network series two years after moving to Saturdays, scoring just above already-canceled CBS shows Queens Supreme and Robbery Homicide Division.
It couldn't beat Robbery Homicide Division. That's why it got canceled.

Even that article makes too much of things, claiming it 'broke ground' because Highway to Heaven wasn't overt about god...what, are you fucking kidding me?

It was cancelled due to a number of reasons -

1 - That Angels "Irish" accent was fucking appalling

2 - An Irish Angel is a contradiction in terms

3 - If there were Irish Angels, everytime some trite lesson was delivered in the series, they'd just go off for a smoke mumbling "For the love of Jaysus...."

i do not doubt, that fanatics of every strip, are offended by anything that so much as dares to suggest morality is anything to be evaluated rationaly as opposed to whatever their assumptions might happen to be, swallowed whole and unquestioned. this might be only a little bit less assinign of a possition were the not so devided, and even violent, even among themselves.

whether or not their rationaly baseless objections may have been at all pertinent is anybody's guess. my guess would be, that since the insurgence of fanatacism has, or had for a time, trumped any sort of rational thought or discussion, then indeed it is not unlikely, that fanatacism itself may have played a roll. or rather more likely, the interaction between fanatacism and botom lines.

only suggesting once again that the love affair between the two may be something of a passing flirtation.

Well, whaddaya know - someone is non-lazy enough to google it and the result is an article most excellently suited for the OP's purposes! :)

Except of course maybe this line - not sure it won't ruin the article's cred for his local crazies: "some shows centered on accepting ethnic diversity and gay people".

Could the fact that it was a load of trite, mediocre bullshit with the same plotline every single episode and so syrupy that Della Reese's diabetes must have gone haywire constantly have anything to do with why it was cancelled? Just a thought...

I take it you haven't watched "Charmed" on TNT.

If "Touched by an Angel" had a bevy of hot young women on it comparable to "Charmed" I'm sure that it would get away with inane plotlines forever - "Charmed" is getting away with it...

Charmed at least was a WB (CW) show, is that still on? Not even a thing for Rose McGowan (an OG thing, too-before Jawbreaker, before Doom Generation, she was on the cover of a cd of lounge versions of Henry Mancini songs that I got as a promo from the record store, my thing for her goes wayback and was even able to survive her dating Marilyn Manson...) can get me to watch that show.

Charmed is being produced by TNT now. It will live forever.
