Ok, so I decided that I need to update my hard drive, and I was just wondering what will happen to my computer when I do. Do I have to reinstall everything or what?

Upgrade. You'd either have to re-install everything (Windows included) or keep your old one and do a two drive system (which Windows does a pretty bad job of).

You have to use a crowbar to get that varmit out in the first place. Then, if you use lots of lube, you can squeeze it back in without to much trouble.

That's about the long and short of it. Pain in the ass, really. You hear that, Microsoft?

You put the Windows CD in, it realizes there's no OS installed and starts installing. It'll give you a chance to format the new disk and all. Takes about 40 minutes.

Then you have to reinstall everything else. That takes longer.

then I suggest you take your computer in to a shop and have them do it. if you make any mistakes, then your system will be buggy.

Mistakes? The only thing you get to choose is your fs, and even then is new drive will be too big for fat32. Anything else is just generic configuration that you can set anytime you want (that said, you rarely need to change the defaults).

I really don't have a problem adding a new HD to windows. Just plug it in, load up the comp, initialize the drive in disk management and it should be ready to go. any boot problems might be related to screwed up boot order that could be fixed in the bios.

If your case has a place to put it, just stick a new one in as a slave drive and install stuff to it to save room on the main drive, that's what I did with my old computer.

well you first need to know if its SATA or not, and if your motherboard supports it. but other than that it isn't too hard. what was a pain in the ass for me was trying to get my 2nd hd to be the new primary one. no matter what it kept on installing windows onto my older one. had to disconnect the old one while Windows installed so I could get the newer HD to be primary system.

Maxtor has a utility that comes with their hard drives(IIRC, it's called MaxBlast), that will clone your old hard drive over to the new drive (including Windows). Then, you can make the new drive your primary, and take out your old drive (or use it as a secondary drive).

Another suggestion is you get yourself an external HDD, and copy all the rarely-used stuff over, as well as documents, pictures, music and your **gig of porn.

Use your main drive just for the basics.
