Mom says dead son needs to be a dad...

I found this on MSN:
http://worldblog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/01/18/33735.aspx

The whole article left me with a very creepy feeling, especially this part:

It was a mother's instinct that led Cohen to request doctors to freeze her dead son’s sperm. Cohen said she had a dream one year after her son died.

"He appeared in my dream and asked me, mom what’s with my child? Please hurry," said Cohen. "I woke up with a big sweat and decided to go ahead, all the way."

Then came the legal battle, which was fought around the ruling permitting only the wife of a deceased man to extract his sperm and to become impregnated by it. The new ruling now recognizes the parent’s right over a dead child’s sperm.

I'm all for a wife wanting to have a child by her late husband, but a mother saving her dead son's sperm?

What do you all think?

That's creepy. Why can't she just clone him like a normal mother would?

His dream was to father a child? What kind of dream is that? Any idiot can father a child, it's like saying "my dream is to make a ham sandwich".

On the other hand that woman is lucky his dream wasn't bringing peace to the Middle East, solving world hunger, or discovering a cure for cancer.

"Normal" being the operative word...

Would any guy want his mom to have access to his sperm? Isn't that wrong in and of itself?

I knew women with children developed a sometimes overwhelming desire for grandchildren but I think this is going too far. Creepy is a very good word.

Just because she wants to save her son's sperm does NOT mean she wants to be preggerz with it.

And I don't see anything creepy about it. :p

No, she actually interviewed prospective mothers. I'm wondering if these women are just incubators and the mother will raise the child, or if there will be some type of custody.

I wonder how she told her son to ejaculate into a test tube so when he dies he can have a son?

Well, there are ... ahem ... ways they can harvest the little wigglers after you've shuffled off this mortal coil, if they move quickly enough.

Or maybe she was, erm..., harvesting them from him in preparation for such an event.

The Idear of a dead person fathering a child is'nt new. In some tribes a brother will impregnate a dead siblings wife in his name a sister may even marry her and act as the childes social father. The whole idear in some cultures is that if you do not reproduce your line runs out and you are dishounered..

If she had done it all on her own, I'd find it pretty creepy. But since he had made it clear to her that he really wanted this, it's less creepy. Then again, he probably wanted to actually raise a child, not just be a sperm donor, so one has to wonder if she's really honoring his memory all that much.

Yeah - especially since I find this passage in the article quite telling (although, to be fair, it might just be the choice of the writer to put it like that):

[Her lawyer] called with the news that her dream of becoming a grandmother was going to come true.

Damnit, dead people aren't supposed to be able to have children. You don't want to remove the only reason why evolution bothers with keeping men alive, do you?

Hey! I've got an idea! Why doesn't she team up with the woman who tossed her kids into the bay? You know, freeze their sperm, toss 'em in the bay, get pregnant with the sperm, toss 'em in the bay...

You're right, it is bad enough when living men decide they want to see screaming, slime coated sacks of flesh fired out of their partner's flaring vagina like a biologically based pop-gun.
You don't want to remove the only reason why evolution bothers with keeping men alive, do you?
Evolution will still need men around and kicking. Without us, who would make misogynistic jokes and enforce glass ceilings?

Wouldn't this make the kid a half-zombie?
How will he react? Will the grandmother have to feed him fresh brains every other day? Will he shamble? moan?

No.no.no.no. This just isn't right. We need to be eradicating the zombie menace, not helping increase their numbers.

You know, if this keeps up, I can only imagine what family tree's are going to look like in the future. It just won't go down. It will go up, sideways, diagonally and who knows where else?

This poor dead mans mother has serious psychological problems and is obviously surrounded by opportunists and enablers. A very sad story indeed. This is a child, who although will hopefully be born to a loving family, will never know his father. He is basically a child born of grief, because people just cannot let go. I can't imagine the pain of a mother losing their child, but this is a clear case of obsession and grief run amok.

I'd wager s/he'll be born into an obsessive over-protective family who will seriously screw him up before s/he even finds out the weirdness of their paternity.
