Carphone Warehouse has suspended its sponsorship of 'Celebrity' Big Brother, after alleged racism against one of the 'inmates', a Bollywood actress.

Here's what was actually said - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6271161.stm

So far, Ofcom, the regulatory body for tv, has received 30,000 complaints about the show, and will probably receive more. For context, the most complaints Ofcom ever received over one show/incident was 63000 for the Jerry Springer Opera when it was broadcast on BBC 2. Although 55000 of those were received before it was screened...

Anyway. The chief executive of Channel 4, which shows CBB, had this to say: "This morning we have clarified with Shilpa, and unequivocally, she does not believe the treatment she has received is racially motivated.

"She thinks it is socially and culturally motivated," he added.

Does that make it any better? Does it matter what the motivation was? Were the comments even that bad?

I think we should take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. :)

That's the only sensible thing to do.

Ugh, why do people watch these shows? Is it a horrid fascination with how disgusting people can be to one another? Like we need to look far for examples of that:rolleyes:

You post about big brother in preference to posting about storms with winds in excess of 100mph that have killed several people and left a 400,000-500,000 homes in the UK without power?

I don't care what they said really I watched the show for 5 minuets (<.< >.>) and that bloody woman poured bones down the toilet before going off to complain that they where “victimising her” when they told her to use the sink

I’m not surprised really if she’s always like that I’d of buried her in the big brother garden by now

Go read the News24 thread.

Besides, I don't lose at life. I lose at caring about people I never knew nor was ever likely to know. And I'd have freely admitted that before this anyway.

And considering there's a hurricane in Germany, I don't think the few people killed here is that much of a story.

Problem is that Shipla has no idea what Goody and the other ignorant 'celebrities' have been saying when she has not been there.

I think its a debate that is needed.

Is Goody insensitive to other cultures or racist?

Until I found out she had actually been to India I thought she was just mere ignorant chavscum. Now its apparent to me that she is actually racist.

And needs a damn good slapping. I wonder if Goody and her pathetic cohorts know that Shipla is a karate Blackbelt?

As with all reality shows. Who knows what happened before the final edit. I had a friend on a reality show and it's absolutely amazing how different reality is from the TV show.

The producers (or whoever) had manufacuted a fight she was supposedly having with someone else in the house. Funny thing was they were super close friends during filming.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you. However the thing here is that the dynamics are reflective of parts of Britain.

Jade and her friends are from working class council estates. Why do they act like this? Is it racism? Is it cultural insensitivity? Is it ignorance or fear?

my thinking is that the issue has gone beyond whether or not she was the subject of racial slurrs from other housemates. the issue has now become whether or not the british public (a proportion of them who vote in big brother anyway) endorses (alleged) racism, by voting, or not voting Jade out of the house.

It's mob mentality. Similar people gang up to suport each other when they are emotionally insecure and can end up picking on surrounding minorities as a way to vent such insecurities. If you want to witness such an effect there are plenty of better ways to do so than watching big brother. Big Brother is a very bad way to research such infomation because, as already stated, the producers can put huge slants on the footage you actually see and the order in which you see it.

Quite. As I posed in my first post....is this ignorance or stupidity? Is it racist if you are think as two short planks? (the part where one of the housemates complains that Shipla can't speak English properly...with an incredibly think scouse accent)

I was just trying to show my disdain for this being considered so important that the BBC considers it the third most important news item after today's storms, and the rise in the license fee.

i didn't even know there had been any storm til i logged on to the BBC news website this evening. i mean i knew there was forecast to be winter storms but i thought we'd missed it. all we got in edinburgh was a light dusting of snow on the hills. i was looking forward to blizzards and stuff. although one of my seminars was cancelled cuz the lecturer couldn't get in, so i guess it was worse in the highlands.

I've come across a few fuckwits in my time, but shes one of the worst. But they're picked out of thousands to be thick/weird/extroverted/introverted. Get one of each, fuck in front of camera, and edit till 'interesting'. However, thanks to (presumably) a smart management team, this waste of flesh has developed a life of its own - Frankenfuckwit - rampaging across tabloids and "celeb" mags, abetted by a delirious mob, who've forgotten they're supposed to kill the beast, not cheer it on. I don't watch the poxy thing, and I know about this.....my mind is dirty, dirty, dirty......

You are of course one hundred percent correct. She does seem to have a good management team. Well did. Until they let her unsupervised access to the beast.

I can't help but sniggering right now... sort of an arrogant intelectual little snigger.
See, I watch an awful lot of TV, 2-4 hours on a weekday, and more on the weekends. And yet I have no clue who this fuss is all about. I tend to stick to documentaries, movies or comedies, so as a result I never even heard the names of any of the people this scandal is about. And from what I hear here, I'm glad I don't. :D

Shilpa has more elegance and quality than a thousand chavettes - the problem here is jealousy expressed as malicious sniping. I have too much experience of estate chavscum and can attest to the fact that we would all be far better off without them. Hitler had the right idea but went after the jews because he was misguided. We should implement the final solution and this time see it through.
