In the middle of winter?

I wonder how the Netherlands will fare with this sort of storm - it can't be good for the sea control system.

A hurricane, storming from Germany into Poland and Czechia? It's WWII all over again.

Hell, in south Florida a hurricane warning was everybodies signal to go to the beach. Especially the surfers.

It's been rather stormy around here the past days (North-Rhine Westphalian talking), and yes, I've received the warning via radio. Well, I don't have a car, and not really a choice not to go to uni today, so all I'm hoping for is that my dear little bike that's tethered on campus will make it till 6p.m., and that I make it home safely on it afterwards :]. Presently (3pm), all is windy and rainy, but not extraordinarily so.

I hear that my home town's been fucked with pretty badly by storms yesterday/overnight, though. Memo to self to call my parents before phone lines go dead..again.

ETA: They closed French cemeteries to prevent visitors being killed by blown-off boughs and branches / falling trees? While I recognize that to probably be a rather reasonable thing to do, it still strikes me as pretty funny.

Not just South Florida, either, Daytona and the East Coast along with Florida's West Coast...

not really a hurricane here, but it is extremely windy. so it's not hard to believe there is one a few 100 km to the north-east. and it sucks to study with all the noise .

I knew God had been sleeping for a long time. According to my sources, he went to sleep around 1930.

He suddenly found himself awake yesterday and saw a report on WWII, and decided to take measures.

For me, it's the only "rational explanation". The climate has gone nuts.

And as for predictions, tomorrow inland Argelia and Morocco will suffer massive floods from constant rains, as will the center of Australia.

Ah, that's why it is so windy out here. I was already pondering this :p

And our sea control system is made exactly to survive these kind of circumstances :) And if it breaks, mehh, I don't care, I live in the part above sea level ;)

Since I come from California, and now in Bavaria (south Germany), I find this hurricane thing really wacked!

I wonder how many people will believe me if I said that my first Hurricane experience was in Germany in the Middle of January!

Its not as bad right now (5:20pm Germany time). But its is really interesting. A few people are not sure what to do, especially for preparation.

But the big part is supposed to his tonight. It seems that the only constant for weather is change.

Nah, no eyes.

And I take back eevry belittling comment I may have made earlier. It is now 18:10 pm, and I should be at uni, but uni has been cancelled at 4pm so that everyone could have been home by 5pm. I've had the extreme luck that a friend of mine drove me home by car; we've had trouble with taht already, I don't want to know where my bike and I had ended up :[

Right now, it's a fucking nightmare; I've had to call my flatmate to help me close the front door because the wind was stronger than me (I'm fairly tall and strong enough, usually), many employers have sent ther people home, and I hear that many roads lined with trees have been completely closed down (ironically, I know someone who is now desperately trying to find a way home via a thousand detours because she may now not use any of the usual roads she takes home).

Anyhow, posting from battery-powered laptop because the power is a flaky business right now *curses at flickering lamp* and safe and sound at home, with no intention whatsoever to set a single foot outside any more.

I just read that the DeutscheBahn (the German railway system) cancelled all service in the afternoon in my state (apparently, at some time they decided it wasn't safe enough anymore and just let the train stay in whatever the next station was and made the passengers get out and be on their own in some fricking station or the other) and only offers limited service elsewhere - poor people who depend on it!
ETA: Slow, slow jolt.. so I understand Laerod beat me to it :]

Also, 10 deaths are reported as of now, school had been cancelled, and many(major) roads and airports have been closed down.

 Poor SoWiBi! :(

Here in Berlin I heard about it on the radio for the first time around noon today - they were making a big deal of it, one channel giving away 500 free parking spaces in a parking garage so people's cars wouldn't get crushed by trees...

All afternoon right up until I left work at 9:45pm it was just rainy and pretty windy and we had a funny little thunderstorm, but meh.

But by the time I got home 30 minutes later it was already really bad, flying debris and all. I hope I succeeded to park my car in the one space that would get spared when any of the huge trees all around it would topple. *gulp* :(

But yeah, it's only starting here now and I don't think (and hope) it's going to get as bad as where SoWiBi is.

Here's a pretty picture on the danger zones:

Don't worry, poor SoWiBi's fine; it's slowly subdueing now (and I plugged my laptop back in, heh). Unfortunately, we were all too busy hiding in our rooms and occasionally checking our windows to see how dry/wet they were to realize our Vorraum was slwoly starting to resemble a swimming pool. Lucky for us we only store our bikes and some old unused trunks etc. in there.

But yeah, it's only starting here now and I don't think (and hope) it's going to get as bad as where SoWiBi is.
My flatmate called her friend who's in Berlin atm and she laughed at our troubles and worries too, saying it was all over-hyped (she works at a mental/psychiatric hospital, and they sent all the people that didn't need to stay overnight home by 12 to have them all safely home, too). I'm glad to see your region's all well.

*calls parents*

Did that too. Big mistake. Huge uproar, my father'd been over an hour overdue coming home from work, Mum went ballistic. Turned out he'd been driving down a road lined with trees and one tree fell down just a few hundred meters behind him, and then yet another kilometer or so around the next bend, so he got stuck in between for quite a while. Scary shit.

In other news.. SoWiBi is not amused. I went to bed around 1am - ish, thinking that all was rather windy but comparably well and expecting to wake up the next morning to sunshine and glory and a relieved sigh that we made it okay.
Hah. As if. I woke up to sounds of fury from the attic at 9am-ish, and inquiring minds were soon told that about a quarter of our roof shingles have been blown off, and the wood construction of the roof ridge has been damaged. Praise the Elk it's not raining anymore, but the wind is still going strong, and I don't know just how much repair we're gonna get with this weather and basically everyone wanting to have the roof-repairman right now.
At least, my laptop and me made it okay :]
