Russia "cracks down on illegal immigrants"

[U]p to half the 12 million foreigners said by the federal migration service to be working illegally could be deported.

[...]

A large Chinese-staffed market in the far east city of Vladivostok had been entirely shut down because local officials could not work out which foreigners should be banned, one television report said.

At another stall at the Butyrsky market, Zoya did not see the Russian officials coming. She arrived from the Central Asian state of Uzbekistan just 15 days ago and does not have a work permit.

"I had to give them 2,500 rubles (94 dollars, 73 euros) to leave me alone," Zoya said. "Everything goes into their pocket. And I bet it's going to happen again."

[...]

Edvar, who is now a Russian citizen, said the situation was increasingly difficult for non-ethnic Russians in a country where there is growing nationalist and anti-immigrant sentiment.

[...]

"Ethnic Russians don't want to work in the markets. They think it's not good enough for them. If they send all the foreigners back to their countries, who's going to sell them potatoes?"

[...]

Russian officials have announced plans to reduce the proportion of foreigners employed in markets to 40 percent by April and to zero by the end of the year.

So it's not just illegal immigrants they don't want...

Not the first time I hear about xenophobia in Russia. Does anyone remember the wave of racist murders not so long ago, including a foreign student from Nigeria murdered just for being black?

I don't think we have any Russians here in NSG, do we? I'd be interested to hear a first-hand commentary. There's nothing in Russia Today (http://www.russiatoday.ru) yet.

Russia has had a lot of racism and xenophobia for a while now, IIRC.

Putin's been openly welcoming racist parties when they've been violating laws in ways that would get other parties arrested and perhaps banned. Did everyone forget the episode against the Georgians? If I'm not much mistaken, it's still going on.

Eh, even under the Soviets these problems were there; they were better at keeping them under control, but it was only through brute force and the strength of the Communist Party's enforcement.

I mean, you had a facade of stability upheld through repression.

It is not right......but what your going to force them to take people they do not want? or your going to get the UN to force them? Maybe give them a hug and tell them it's not their fault they are angry....that will help.

The market will do that just fine when their economy collapses.

I say we set up an illegal immigration foreign exchange program. We can ship them our Mexicans in exchange for Russian illegal immigrants for labor that will work for even CHEAPER and harder over here! Its about time we got some increased competition in the migrant worker market.

Every country uses Immigrants or Foreigners as Scapegoats, but no because it's evil ex-communist Russia it MUST be worse.

Look as Australia, we blame immigrants for the lack of jobs and yet there are more jobs then there is people.
