A large Chinese-staffed market in the far east city of Vladivostok had been entirely shut down because local officials could not work out which foreigners should be banned, one television report said.
At another stall at the Butyrsky market, Zoya did not see the Russian officials coming. She arrived from the Central Asian state of Uzbekistan just 15 days ago and does not have a work permit.
"I had to give them 2,500 rubles (94 dollars, 73 euros) to leave me alone," Zoya said. "Everything goes into their pocket. And I bet it's going to happen again."

Russian officials have announced plans to reduce the proportion of foreigners employed in markets to 40 percent by April and to zero by the end of the year.

Not the first time I hear about xenophobia in Russia. Does anyone remember the wave of racist murders not so long ago, including a foreign student from Nigeria murdered just for being black?
I don't think we have any Russians here in NSG, do we? I'd be interested to hear a first-hand commentary. There's nothing in Russia Today (http://www.russiatoday.ru) yet.
