Myspace hate

Basically, I want to know whats up with all the Myspace Hate I see. Now, let me preface this. Plenty of people say bad things about myspace in totality, and this is what I'm questioning. Not the fact that twelve year old girls make slutty profiles. Thats a problem with 12 year olds doing that. Whats wrong with your average guy, putting up a page with some pictures of himself, some info, a song he really likes, etc?

It may give the impression that you are interested in the aformentioned slutty 12 year old girls, which probably isn't the greatest impression to give to people.

(threadjack) Also, people have recently made me my a myspace for me... Should I be scared?

Note the "that's a problem with 12 year old girls doing that" part.

I go for the 14 year olds! (I'm joking, I swear).

Also, don't be afraid. I see myspace as email+. Its more convinient.

Remember that there are some guys out there who would be pleased to meet a 35 year old slut...not me, mind you, 'cause....'cause I get a lot of women, young ones, in their twenties with those little tattoos above their ass crack...

To be honest, I don't see really see the fuss at all, positive or negative.

Or is it just that they're having more fun than you, and that it bothers you?

Seriously, giving a fuck about people's online activities, is the epitome of futility. One of the great things about these damn tubes, is that your Moral Majority-type drivel is pointless & ineffectual. People will do what they want to do regardless. Another is that this thing's pure anarchy; your decide what you participate in.

Bash whatever you feel like though, but realise looking at porn is more constructive.

Reproach of MySpace is a sort of online cultural elitism, albeit one that I fully endorse. The essential reasoning behind it is that it is a networking tool occupied by a specific community, and if that community is not one that you wish to be a part of or be associated with then you should stay clear of it. And, well, it's generally occupied by illiterate, narcissistic spam-whores who I want nothing to do with. So no thanks.

Let's enumerate, shall we?

1) The myspace pages all look as though they were put together by a 12-year-old with no aesthetic sense whatsoever, which they were.

2) They encourage illiteracy, providing havens for the "omg i r so gr8 y dnt u all <3 me??? :(" crowds to grow and multiply, much like AIM and MSN (and IRC to some degree).

3) The false privacy of the "protected" systems, where only your "friends" can access your page, is not particularly difficult to crack and encourages the posting of sensitive information like addresses and telephone numbers, which in turn encourages paedophilia and rape.

4) It provides a similar haven for child abductors and other such perverts.

5) It's just plain stupid.

In short, whenever I look at it a few more brain cells die. And I only have 100 billion or so of them. <.<

It's a waste of time.

Creepy people try to stalk you.

By and large it's used for hooking up.

Complete strangers really don't care what kind of movies you like or what your About Me says unless they are trying to get in your pants.

Sure it might have once been used for promoting music, but I highly doubt anyone pays attention anymore with all the spam in their message box from "up and coming" bands that sound like ass.

I don't like that Rupert Murdock (sp) bought it to further improve targeted advertising.

I won't date anyone who has a MySpace, period. Too many issues in the past.

that's not really evidence that myspace in particular encourages rape, etc. merely that there are rapists in the world. you'd need to show that a disproportionate number of rapes and cases of child molestation occur due to myspace. i mean, if we accepted evidence like that, then both leaving your house and staying inside encourage the existence rapists and child molesters.

They're not encouraging it, no, but they leave themselves open to the possibility of abuse by setting the age limit for members so low. Read the news story Smunkee cited. A 14-year-old girl? Even by myspace standards, she's too young to have had a page. Yet she was there. Myspace doesn't police itself at all, so they leave themselves open to being used by predatory pedophiles.

1. It sucks.

2. It sucks cock.

3. It sucks flaccid cock.

4. It sucks flaccid uncircumcised pus oozing from the tip cock.

5. Every MySpace page is the very definition of "atrociously horrible web design."

6. It takes forever for a page to load and 90% of the time it crashes. That kind of shit might have been acceptable back in 1994-96 when the web was just starting out but these days that's inexcusable.

MYspace is the best thing since the dinosaurs were made extinct in the book of Genesis. If it wasn't for Myspace I wouldn't have met some of my old friends, got married to a rich widow who is twice my age but half my size and we wouldn't of had a kid that we've named 'far out'. 2) They encourage illiteracy, providing havens for the "omg i r so gr8 y dnt u all <3 me??? :(" crowds to grow and multiply, much like AIM and MSN (and IRC to some degree).
5) It's just plain stupid.
-snippage-
MSN is nothing like that and most 12 yo want to be picked up by older guys.
To be honest, I don't see really see the fuss at all, positive or negative.

The detractors in particular remind me of the people expressing outrage over IRC years ago because pedophiles might use it to pick up young girls or distribute child porn.

It is a cool way to check out and get into contact with bands, though.
If there was one reason to have a Myspace it owuld be to chat to people pretending to be from Bands or actually being a part of them.
However the amount of 'OMG I LUV U', *Add other crap random things that are said here, that i can't be bothered to find proof of.*
Anyways what is your Myspace Kanabia?

Um.... I have a myspace & got it to keep tabs on/stay in contact with my 15 year old sister (who is far from slutty, at least compared to me at her age), so I take offense to that assumption.

I have myspace for the exact same reason - to keep tabs on your sister.

My Myspace page is incredibly dull and is severely lacking in friends. I thought about begging NSers to help make it less pathetic but I didn't want to come off as some desperate loser who is on your lawn, pressing his face against your living room window begging to be let in. You know, the pathetic stalker type. Then again what do I have to lose except my self-respect and earning the contempt of my NS comrades? Can't really think of anything offhand... I suppose some pleading will be in order. Hmmmm.

I didn't say I made the assumption, I said that some people might make that assumption. Of course not everyone on myspace is slutty or wants someone slutty, but that is a somewhat common perception and a reason to stay off myspace could be to avoid having that assumption made about you.

By my experiance with Myspace, it's those slutty collage girls who are the worst.

Tho i wont complain, there overaged so i dont get in trouble for saving there pictures :P

It depends what kinda friends you accept really, if your that worried about safety just put you profile 2 private and only add people u know.

I have allot of good friends on myspace because i only accept people i know, and naughty Collage girls :P

It's not that I expect people to add me (I only have four friends on it since I deleted my old account and made a new one, heh), it's more that recently i've become generally uneasy about connecting anything I say on any given internet forum to something more personal.

Well, in my case, that's doubtful, unless they happened to recognise my picture (which would be a freak occurence considering the amount of people that use myspace.)

Such a waste really ... there are things called telephones ... or text messaging. Though personally if someone has drifted so far from my circle of friends that they don't tell me something like the fact that they are moving ... I would not waste my time with them

I just don't see how myspace would be worth the while if you took out its biggest function.

It ends up being a loud annoying way to email ... filled with anoying people that can use the information to A) stalk you B) annoy you C) proposition you for sex.

Since I left undergrad, I've had some trouble keeping track of all my old college buddies. We all have moved around a lot in the last couple of years, as we try to sort out what we're doing with our lives, and sometimes these moves will happen during a period when you weren't actively keeping in touch with somebody.

I have actually never even been to MySpace, so I can't opine on that site in particular, but I know that my own blog has been very helpful in letting me stay in touch with my friends who have scattered over the face of the Earth. It's even helped me regain contact with high school buddies who I had completely lost track of!

Why do I hate myspace?

Simple: I do.

My roommate has a myspace, and whenever he puts his location as "Columbus" he gets solicitations from all these creepy, middle aged women around the city. I find it more than slightly disturbing, and as such I shall never, ever get a myspace.

I think I still have an account there, but I'm not sure. Haven't checked it in a very long time. I only got it so I could check out people's photos. On a forum I used to frequent, it was common practice for someone to find a myspace photo gallery and post a link to it so we could all pounce on it like hungry hyenas. Some of it got pretty harsh, but it was funny as hell.
