Irish Euro banknotes "contaminated with cocaine"
An ongoing research project into the detection of illicit drug use has shown that of a sample of bank notes in current circulation in the greater Dublin area - €5, €10, €20 and €50 denominations - 100% of them showed contamination with cocaine.
[...]
[Says one of the researchers:] "The 100% rate uncovered in this project was surprising. Although not a quantitative measure, the presence of illicit substances on banknotes in general circulation provides an indication of the degree to which substances are being used by the community".

Old, old story and also non-news as most currency has traces of cocaine on it due to the fineness of its powder state.

Oh, stop spoiling my fun. The article itself is new, even if the news is old. :p

They only did a 'survey' of 420ish notes in one city. Not exactly a very credible survey from that university.
Nothing new as has been pointed out, same as with most currencies arond the world.
Bah. It amused me for a brief while.
It is surprising that they're doing a study about it, then...

Thisa story is bollocks. They found coke in 100% of 45 notes drawn from the same bank at the same time

Its worse than that...the sample was 45 notes.

Actually, I was way out- it was 45 notes.
Wow. That's representative.
Edit: Yes, yes I know. I glanced at the news last week sometime. Saw digits like it. Laughed and paid no more attention to it.
Its worse than that...the sample was 45 notes.
And yet:
"This is the largest sample of notes ever used in an experiment of this kind in Ireland", Bones said. "A larger number of notes would give a more representative view of cocaine use in our society, but the number used is sufficient from which to draw conclusions.
So... Either 45 is considered "sufficient"... or nobody ever stopped to think that it might be a good idea to work on a few more than that.

You can't blame someone for regurgitating stuff if it means getting a PhD. :p

The Irish obviously know how to party.
this 'survey' has been rubbished totally. all 45 notes from one atm. if one was contaminated, it will contaminate all others in the machine.
i mean, who uses a fiver to hoover? ;)

or the researchers have a vested interest in 'proving' that we are under siege from the drugging. more funding in the middle of a moral panic and all that

while i will agree the "study" leaves much to be desired,i have heard that a large percentage of us currency is contaminated.
this also allows the police to confiscate the cash, and under us forfiture laws...one has to prove the money did not come from drug proceeds...unlike innocent until proven guilty....
i will dig up a an article i read last week about a county in florida that has people sign off any money they had to the police, for reduced charges, after m.v. stops.
i did not know this, but friends down south recently have told me....do not travel down south with cash..if you get stopped, you lose it.
i only point this out with regards to the op,as this may be the direction they want to head with regards to england/ireland.
and the even more sinister..lol...theory i hear about the gov wanting to make all transactions plastic..so they can more easily track people, maximise taxes..etc
not that i agree with the above, but food for thought.;)

Two words: 'sorting' 'machines'.
If you've ever seen one working you'll see that they throw bank notes around at considerable speeds. Now, if just one note has some cocaine on it, that will be dusted straight off due to its ultra-fineness and then settles on everything around it.
Fun Fact: two of my friends worked as money sorters for a while. They had to wear masks while operating the sorting machines... no getting coked up on bank time!! :D
