I thought this was quite interesting, and informative.

It also shows you where some states are really, really poor, and some are doing quite well.

I especially like the comparison of Texas and Canada.

The France/California and Pakistan/Arkansas comparisons tickled me, but yeah the Texas/Canada one is great. :)

It'd be nice to know how the populations compare. It may sound bad to have the GNP of Bangladesh, but if your population is only one tenth...

Well, NJ has Russia's GDP with 8 or 9 million people.

See, this is only proof that the US IS the world. All those countries you keep hearing about? Synonyms for our states. USA! USA!

...Findland isn't even on the list. This disappoints me. :( (Doesn't help that a lot of the ranching in southern Colorado got gobsmacked by the death of thousands of cattle thanks to our bloody cold winter. Not that we're the only ones to suffer that kind of economic impact...)

Vydro: France is fifth on the list, and California ALONE matches France. I daresay that says something, don't you?

Aye, but its France. I'd rather we go down two to Italy than be stuck with France ;)

I'm kidding around mostly, but still.

This is probably one of the very few times that "Arizona" and "Thailand" have been mentioned together...

What, Netherlands but no Luxembourg? Hmph, Luxembourg is too good, the U.S doesn't have a state that compares.

It makes no sense at all, given that populations differ wildly. (e.g. Bangladesh and Vermont)

comparing GDP per capita would make more sense.

I'm not about to make a map, but...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._States_by_GDP_per_capita_%28nominal%29

...even our "poorest" state, Mississippi, would rank 34th in the world, ahead of nations like Taiwan, Spain, New Zealand, Israel, South Korea, and Greece.

Aside from the two poorest states (Miss. and W. Virginia), every state in the Union would rank at least 21st in the world...ahead of most of Europe, and just behind Japan.

If you drop out the ten lowest states, 40 of the top 50 "nations" listed would be U.S. states.

Delaware, the "richest" state (NOT counting D.C.), would be 3rd in the world, after Bermuda and Luxembourg.

All the casinos run by Guinness?

Someone mentioned population and GDP... definitely more realistic, but if you look at the two largest states in the US regarding GDP (California and Texas) and their comparison countries( France and Canada) and take into account populations, California is 44,846 (all numbers in USD) while France is 29,187 and Texas is 42,975 while Canada's is 34,273. The strangest disparity is the District of Columbia's GDP per capita (150,361... way to go Congress) and New Zealand (24,797)

I will say, the Canada/Texas comparison is apt at the moment thanks to their weather hanging about the past week down here.

That is interesting. I had always read that California had the _third_ largest GNP in the world. Maybe it slipped with the loss of those oranges last night.
