If you have upgraded to windows messenger 8.0 (live messenger) and it won't log in (whereas all other versions of messenger will), then you have got a compatibility issue.

I had exactly this problem myself not long ago - messenger 8.0 refused to log in because it claimed that my router wasn't opening the "key ports".

This is a complete lie - it turned out to be nothing to do with the router and everything to do with my operating system which (at the time) was XP professional albeit without either service pack.

You need to have both service packs 1 and 2 installed for live messenger to work properly. Don't ask me why. You just do.

Yes, this may mean either (1) giving money to microsoft for a legal copy of windows, and (2) having to do a complete reinstall of your operating system. Sorry.

Impedance speaks the truth. But on the bright side: this is the perfect opportunity to try some of the free, quality alternatives. Gaim & Miranda are both more versatile, as easy to use, less resource heavy & free from ads & other nasty shite, and so are many others. Go have a look at sourceforge.net

No need to kill any goats or waste time on legit XP copies. It's a great OS, but the shit that comes with it is usually extremely sub-par. MSN included.

My copy is legit and completely up to date. Can these open source versions do everything the real one can, because I don't give a shit if it can log on to AIM and Yahoo too if it won't let me use audio and video.

The last 3-4 weeks i have had problems viewing my emails by direct link from MSN, ican log into ze hotmail but attempting such a small task from MSN kills and i have to reboot.
However i use 7 maybe 7.5 maybe even 8... but Wiki has something to say about MSN being abandoned for Live.

Thats right all that hassle with installing.:(

This (http://gaim.sourceforge.net) should solve your MSN 8.0 problems.
