there is nothing new under the sun

having mentioned my band earlier today......I thought I would share this. Every time I write a new song, hubby comes through with "you know what that reminds me of" and starts singing a song, and......sure enough there is something in common.

I have tried many times to rationalize this by telling him "there are only so many chords, eventually two of them will match up again, geez man how good do you think I am that I will never match a set of chords that have been previously matched?!" then I grab up my bass and walk out in a huff.

In defense this evening he sent me this video......I laughed so hard, because instead of him annoying me with it, he proved my point.

There really is nothing new under the sun.

so, since he proved my point........and we can all agree now......are there any songs you feel have unjustly "borrowed" from others?

I seem to remember one of my friends ranting sometime about Papa Roach stealing a bass riff from Green Day, but when I played it for them they realized that Green Day had stolen it from someone else (I don't remember who now, because I was high then, but I think some 70's stadium type cheese band)

oh, and if you like the comedian, here (http://www.robprocks.com/) is is website. (shameless promo)

I don't write a lot of music, but when I do, I always here hints of what I've recently seen live in it. Not music I listen to at home, it's always live stuff, for some reason.

I can come up with riffs easily.

What I find hard is putting them together into a coherent song structure, so sometimes I imitate the structure of other songs.

Oh, I shamelessly steal drumbeats too, since I can't play drums myself.

But all artists steal, and it's been happening for a very long time. So meh.

At least you seem authentically concerned with being original.

Lot of acts these days make their name "sampling" popular pieces...

I sort of pride myself on coming up with odd, Byzantine song structure when I do write music, mostly for the guitar, so I guess I should argue that originality does exist.. but really, most music is a variation on one of a number of major themes, I think it's true. Even when your song is original, your chord progressions/patterns will usually have been done before in some recognizable way.

Pearl Jam's intro to Yellow Ledbetter is a clear rip-off of Jimi Hendrix Little Wing...I get angry everytime I hear it played.

I steal my riffs. I commit the most horrid travesty.

I have the temerity to use I-V-IV progressions, how horrible. :p

And I laughed and laughed.

It's really just baroque"
