For me its a tie between the Anti-Heroes cover of Skrewdriver's Anti-Social (retitled to, I'm an Anti-Hero in protest of the film American History X using a tattoo of their logo without their permission), and The Ramones cover of CCR's Have You Ever Seen the Rain.

Crossroads by Cream, covered from Robert Johnson

Have A Cigar by Foo Fighters covered from Pink Floyd

I came into this thread just to say that. You hit the nail on the head there.

I certainly buy that song a lot more coming from him.

Why's that?

Some other good cover versions:

Gustav Holst's "Mars" performed by King Crimson (points for creativity)
Metallica's "Master of Puppets" album performed by Dream Theater (points for the effort of covering an entire album in one concert)
Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" performed by John Fogerty (points for all the guitar antics)
Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" performed by Metallica
David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" performed by Nirvana

A couple of my favorite covers would probably be:

Ne me quitte pas - Nina Simone's cover of Jacques Brel. Brel did it better, but he was a man-god of musical talent. Still, Simone did quite well with it.

Baby, it's cold outside - Ray Charles and Betty Carter. I don't know that it's a cover since it wasn't really attached to any specific musician. It was done by a lot of people before them, though.

I'll have more at some other point.

I still like the original more, but Jose did a nice job not butchering it. His "Crosses" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dTXr4S8PK4) also made up for any residual sacrilege that lies in covering anyone as great as The Knife. I just wish he'd do stuff in Swedish sometimes...

I'd agree. It somehow gets the message of the song across a lot better. What do you think to their covers of When The Levee Breaks and What's Going On? For me, the latter is probably the best on eMOTIVe, and one of the best covers I've heard.

As for other good covers - almost anything by Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, especially The Longest Time, starting with the intro to Suspect Device, and Elenor, starting with the London Calling intro. :)

I entirely disagree. The Stones' version is very good, but so is Gn'R's - and if they lack Jagger's oily, dark delivery, the gunners make up for it with frenetic power and significantly better musicianship (I love the Stones - but aside from Keith, they are NOT great musicians).

I'm serious. It's far better than it has any right to be, and I had it on repeat for a full week once.

I agree. It's as good as the original, which is great, so that's good. Or something.

I also agree with Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower. I disagree with Guns 'n' Roses'(s? Does that count as plural or not?) cover of Sympathy for the Devil.

To add some of my own: Marilyn Manson's covers of Tainted Love and Sweet Dreams, plus Manfred Mann's Earth Band's cover of Blinded by the Light. Even if I think preferring a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song to the original makes me dirty and a bad person.

I also heard a band in a pub cover Hit Me Baby One More Time, a song that I hate the original of (I loathe Britney Spears full stop), but with a male singer and heavy guitars it was actually really good.

Oh, totally forgot about that! That has to be up there. Great song, great cover. And, like his Tainted Love cover, it's deliciously sleazy. I didn't particularly like the original or Soft Cell version of TL, so I'm not a massive fan of MM's version. Still good, though.

Guns n' Roses verson of "Sympathy for the Devil" is a great cover.

I guess you're entitled to your opinion, but I think it's dreadful.

Cover versions I like include:
Bob Dylan's version of House of the Rising Sun. (Okay, it's a folk song, but I'm sure he was covering the Woody Guthrie version.)
Manic Street Preachers version of the M*A*S*H theme tune.
Joe Cocker's version of Whiter Shade of Pale. (Not that it adds a great deal to the original, but I like it.)
Sid Vicious butchering My Way.
Soft Cell's cover of Tainted Love. (It was originally a Motown track.)

Uh... I wanna say Eddie Vedder (is that right? Front man for Pearl Jam) did an absoultely unconvincing cover of Phil Ochs' "Here's to the state of Mississippi"

The actual reinterpretation shows a complete lack of understanding of how Ochs performed, but it remains a wonderful performance in it's own right, even if it sounds nothing like Ochs did.

Edit: And the Sex Pistols - No Fun was an... Iggy Pop (I think) cover, no? Their last performance of that will forever define the song in my mind.

Ugh... Eddie Vedder makes me wanna puke. He totally ruined the final Ramones concert.

And No Fun was a Stooges song from their album, 1969. And yeah, that final performance is definitely the most memorable, but their best was at the Screen on the Green back in 1976. There's a full recording of the gig on their box set, released in 2002, with pristine audio quality.

It couldn't be anything but pristine, as there might've been ten people in the audience. :p

Well, I'm as interested in the emotion of the song as I am in the technical presentation, and while the final performance struggled to convey the technical side of things, I think it is undeniable that, as Lydon swings his feet on the edge of the stage and monotonously intones "No Fun", the emotional core of the song is fully realized, and they really are having No Fun at all.

But I'll check that out.

The same goes for Vedder. He murdered the Ochs piece. He absolutely tore apart the verse structure to rewrite some lyrics for the Bush Admin. Worse yet, he didn't understand how Phil Ochs meant for it to be played, and so he let it get bogged down in his thick, very grunge-based vocal skills, but Ochs was a clean and precise singer who sang with crystal clarity. However, the emotion of the piece survives and the message that Ochs meant for the music to carry, that "This is my home, too, and god damn it, you're destroying my home with your far-right policies", survived.

You shall listen to Husker Du's cover of Love Is All Around, and listen much. Look for it and find pure gold.

As long as you never, ever try to get me to listen to anything by Rush:)

"Am I Evil?" covered by Metallica. Originally by Diamond Head I believe.

Or

"A Fine Day to Die," covered by Emperor, originally by Bathory.

oh, and "Blowing in the Wind," covered by Peter, Paul and Mary, originally by Bob Dylan IIRC.

José González's cover of "Heartbeats" by The Knife.

EDIT: Oops, appears this has already been said. Still, it really is as perfect a cover as is possible to get.

Meh.

I'm gonna do a cover of it that'll blow all the others out of the water. *cough*
There's a massive list on wikipedia of covers of that song. I've not heard it, but I imagine Die Toten Hosen's cover is probably great. :p

The Clash's cover of "I Fought the Law."

Ugh, that one is terrible. Get the Dead Kennedys' version and see what good covers sound like.

Gotta agree for Imagine. I love that they pick up the original feel and undertones of all the original songs, but also completely change it. Love when the Levee Breaks and What's Going On? too.

Can't pick just one!

Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" - Animal Ant Farm

Alien Ant Farm, not Animal

favorite cover of all time, definatly Lead Zeppelin's version of When The Levee Breaks. How can you not love the drums?

1. That's not a bad thing.
2. You probably don't even know who they are.

Let's see here...

Pantera's version of Planet Caravan...
Cash's version of Hurt (much better than the original, IMHO...)
and I can't stop listening to NOFX's cover of "I Want You To Want Me".

And Frou Frou is crap.
