For a second consecutive year, Tennessee has collected more than $1.5 million in revenue from its so-called "crack tax." The state has been enforcing a tax on illegal substances that drug dealers can report without fear of prosecution. But once arrested, dealers must prove they've paid the tax or face fines or property seizure. A local judge has called it unconstitutional but the state is appealing saying it will help deter crime and boost tax coffers.

This is the first time I've heard of this. Why not just fucking deregulate it already?

becuase now they get money when the tax is paid, then again when the felon is arrested and proven they didn't pay their tax.

this doesn't count the fines paid by the User.

My first thought when I read the thread title was they're now charging people's arse cracks.

Anyone have the same thought?

Anyone?

Hmm...just me then.

Love how they say "it will help deter crime". Quite. It's well-known fact that your average crack addict and dealer is frightened of nothing but IRS auditors.

Sounds unconstitutional to me. Of course, so does any taxation in the District of Columbia without a voting representative, but hey, why let that stop them?

i'm still marvelling at the situation this now imposes...

"I am a law-abiding illegal crack dealer."

I mean where else can someone say that and have it be true.

Simple, we have a system now that listen to the people who whine like hell. Said people can't get off thier high horses and feel they must control everyones life as well as thier own. The very same people are oblivious to the consequences of thier actions and in turn, bitch about the problems that stem from thier previously controlling actions. This leads to a further whittling away at freedoms to solve the problems they are responsible for creating, thereby multiplying the problems in other ways.

until reasonably recently, in australia, you could claim a loss of illegally made money on your taxes.

This is actually quite a clever idea...though I suspect that most drug dealers will turn down the offer and attempt to continue to sell their drugs undetected.

No, this system has been in place for several years now. What happens is that when you're found with drugs, they give you the bill for the tax - it's a way to punish those who are caught with drugs, so even if you get off our whatnot, you take a hit financially. It's not meant to be a way to make your drugs legal or legitimate.
