Vancouver is a horrible place to live. Don't even consider living here - it's not as advertised... granted, the people are friendly, but it's a shithole. Crappy weather, crappy traffic (and don't say your city has bad traffic, you have no idea what that is until you live here), crappy public transportation, crappy politics and government and too much contempt for Canada's official languages. Oh, and the threat of a tsunami, earthquake, flood, volcanic eruption etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum doesn't exactly make a positive. I vote for Calgary - much nicer, people are just as friendly if not friendlier, the sports teams are better, the climate is better and there's a spirit there that you can't match in any other city.
Vancouver is wonderful. The traffic is better than in Edmonton or Victoria, it's more friendly to non-heterosexuals than Calgary or Edmonton, has better winter weather than Calgary or Edmonton, et cetera.
Who really gives a flying f--- about local sports teams when considering where to live? Also, Vancouver, unlike as Pacitalia stated, is much more tolerant of Quebec and French than any portion of Alberta, no matter how large or small. The Skytrain is awesome, and the buses are excellent. Also, in case anyone was ignorant of the fact, Alberta is Canada's Texas, and therefore, by definition, the politics and government suck more.
Well, unless you're a conservative heterosexual male capitalist - and then, please, move to Alberta.

That would be me, yes. But I don't consider myself so naive as to dictate where I live based on my politics. Thanks for assuming, though. :)
But I must protest - SkyTrain is about the only thing TransLink has going for it. The buses are terrible, so either you've been brainwashed or you just happen like spending 3 hours on a bus going a total distance of 10km and transferring to three different buses in that time.
Have you ever BEEN to Edmonton or Calgary? Cos you must be seeing Vancouver through rose-coloured glasses. The traffic there is MUCH better than here - granted, it's getting worse cos of the boom, but nothing will ever match Vancouver in terms of crappiness when it comes to traffic.
Personally, I'd rather have snow in the winter and clear blue skies than constant cloud and pelting rain.
Have it your way, though. And when Vancouver falls into the sea from a cataclysmic earthquake, we'll see who's laughing. :p

Do you live on the Downtown Eastside? If so... what are you smoking, and can I have some of it, please? Holy crap. You need to tell us exactly which bus it is you're taking that's so freaking amazing cos I have to say I can't think of one off the top of my head. Oh, you mean all those buses that just whiz past you saying they're full even though they have three people in them? The outrageous zone limits? The jerkoff bus drivers? Yeah, great system. I don't think you should be proud to ride a transit system that hasn't been at its peak since 1996 (see award given, decals on every bus).
Oh, and the reason we're "sooooooo tolerant" of the French - NO ONE SPEAKS ENGLISH HERE.
P.S. None of my homosexual or bisexual friends have ever had a problem in Calgary or Edmonton. So stop trying to make them out to be devil cities. The real problem child of Canadian cities is Vancouver. Period. :)

I only went there because they didn't require the SAT or ACT for students who had graduated more than 24 months prior. The next year I transferred to Central, which isn't a great school but it's a lot better.
Ann Arbor, Michigan.
I love A2. I haven't been there in a couple years, unfortunately. There's a bar there called Ashley's that has over 60 beers on tap. I almost cried when I heard that. They also have 4 or 5 Michigan beer samplers with stuff from almost every brewery in the state. Happy times.
I have visited Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City and have had a great time in all three cities, my goal is to get out west and visit the other "major" cities in Canada within the next few years. (I have found the Canadian people to be very friendly... even the time with the drag queens in quebec city who ripped the buttons off my tuxedo shirt, but I digress)
i spent four years at university in Buffalo (hour and a half driving slow) from Toronto and I have to say I would be partial to Toronto. I loved the scene, the people and how clean the city was...
I need to visit soon... sigh

I would have said Kelowna, B.C. until I realized that 100, 000 people isn't exactly a city. Still, it would be the best by far if it was a lot bigger, and the bridge traffic didn't get any worse. Vancouver has bad traffic, Calgary has really crappy drivers, Victoria is too touristy, and I haven't visited the other ones so I will refrain from commenting on them.

Are you employed by the Calgary Visitors Bureau? ;)
Nope, but he grew up in Calgary and has lived for the last... five(?) years in Vancouver. So he knows both places pretty well. And he clearly has his preference. :p
I don't hate Vancouver. In terms of diversity, it's awesome, and its natural beauty is a huge, huge plus. The weather isn't even terrible - I mean, I love rain. I really do. But the transit system hates its passengers, and it would be nice to have snow for Christmas (as opposed to a month beforehand, and two weeks after - and the fact that we've gotten snow at all is a bit of a surprise), and the diversity is getting a little overwhelming - to the point that there's no unifying factors, anymore.
In my opinion, diversity can only be preserved to a certain point. As Paci said earlier, yeah, a variety of languages are tolerated, but jeez. It's becoming more and more common to encounter people who don't speak English OR French, and I do believe those are our national languages, aren't they? I work in the customer service industry, but how the heck am I supposed to help you if you and I can't communicate? I speak English, I have a decent grasp of French. But I can't learn seven other languages, I'm sorry. And there's a reason counties have national languages. Not because they hate other cultures, but because a country can't function unless everyone understands what's going on.
Can we tell this is a pet peeve? It's one of the things that's just getting to me about Vancouver. And who knows, maybe when I leave I'll miss it, but right now, I'm ready to get out.
And yeah. The traffic here pisses me off. I don't even drive in it, and it pisses me off. My dad works for the BCAA, and he'll attest to the fact that there are far too many people driving every day that shouldn't be behind a wheel... ever. And there are idiots everywhere, but Vancouver just seems to attract them. :p

I've lived in Vancouver and it's cool if you're either filthy rich or just a dirty hippie. Or Asian, I guess. Gateway to the Pacific, indeed...there's a reason people call it Hong Kouver, Japanada. Since I'm none of the three, and Asians tend to be a closed culture (friends, yeah, but try and marry an Asian girl if you're white...dang), well...it's a great place to visit, but the best thing to come out of Van is Highway 1 East.
Kelowna's a fun place to visit, but if you're unfortunate enough to be between ages 15 and 20-something it's a prison of a place to grow up. There's the Mission in the south along the lake; the "downtown" area - the attractions of which are a coffee house, Harvey and Lawrence Avenues, and the Hell's Angels Okanagan Grand; and there's Rutland. With sweet fuck all in between. Kids in Kelowna are so bored that they steal cars just to get from one place to another. And the RCMP are completely worthless if you even look under the age of 30. What is there to do? Drink. Smoke pot. Fuck. Wait for the beaches to open. Now, if you own a small business or are retired....Kelowna is a great place for golf! Next.
Never been to Victoria, but what I hear from people who have moved away from there is that it has many of the same problems as Kelowna. Oh, and apparently it's the Satanist capital of Canada. As if that makes any difference whatsoever. I will say this for Victoria...it's one of TWO cities in Canada of which Americans on the west coast seem to be aware of. No joke...mention you're from Canada and the inevitable question is "Oh, like, Victoria? Or Vancouver?" When the answer is "neither", a confused look is followed by an admission that they know nothing more of the Great White North. I usually settle the matter by simply stating that I'm from the "next province over".
At the other end of the country is Ontario, self-determined centre of the universe. I've yet to meet a Torontonian who didn't think and act as though Bytown was the New York of Canada, which, frankly is the last reason to have a superiority complex. Second City, sure, but guess where all the actors are working? Vancouver. Though - and I do digress - I would dearly love to meet Ed the Sock. But I've yet to meet an Ontarian who wasn't paranoid and/or neurotic. Maybe it's just my ill luck. Not the BEST place by any measure if the fine folks there are any indication.
I grew up in Edmonton. The people are okay, but there seems to be a fatal sense of futility and impotent frustration pervading the Festival City. It's too cold for too long. Point blank. Even the days of bright sunshine in January and February are bone-cracking bitter cold. That, and with nothing to do but Whyte Avenue or West Edmonton Mall, it's no wonder the city's called Deadmonton. I used to think Edmonton Transit was the shittiest public system in the universe...until I moved to the States. At least buses in Edmonton showed up every so often.
The only times I was ever in Calgary was when I played Prairie Junior football against the Colts, and when I felt like bailing from Edmonchuk for a weekend. Despite the little time I spent there, I found nothing worthy of the half-hearted hatred Edmontonians are spoon-fed/indoctrinated with. From the city, anyway. But I AM a heterosexual white male, and I couldn't stand the government and it's unerring ability to hear the one wealthy voice of consent in an ocean of middle-class protest. King Ralph is (was?) an undereducated, drunken bigot and racist who spent his entire tenure as Albertan Emperor abdicating and privatizing his responsibilities, and waving our oil-soaked surplus billions in our faces just before an election then pulling them behind his back and telling Education and Healthcare we had no damned money.
Still, I can't fault the Dallas of Canada for that. :p
Regina. O, Regina! Rhymes with vagina, a fact that tickles my American wife no end. How does one get there from Edmonton? Drive east until you smell it, then south until you step in it. Of course, I have deep-seated anger at the Prairie Junior football "referees" (and I use that term as lightly as humanly possible) in both Regina and Saskatoon. Visiting teams can't BUY a fair call...apparently the home sides have paid more. As for actually living there, all I have to go on is episodes of Corner Gas. Take what I say here with a big grain of salt.
I have no experience with any other part of Canada, so I suspect the best place to live is somewhere east of Regina. Quebec City looks like a good candidate with it's somber history, though I'm not nearly racist enough to live in French Canada. Halifax is chock-full of unsatisfied women from what I hear...I'd love a confirmation on that from any Haligonians, if possible. :D
Otherwise my answer to the original question of where the best place in Canada to live is: Portland, Oregon.

Yeah, I am hoping to retain my soul throughout my years of schooling and not have to resort to student loans. And because the program I'm going into is co-op at almost every single university, I can use co-op to pay for my tuition and residence no problem. I'm going to a center (http://www.uco.fr/CIDEF/0/fiche___defaultstructureksup/)at a private French university for foreigners to learn the French language and culture. I'll only be paying 1780€ in tuition, but between tuition, housing, food, etc. this semester will cost me a bit over $10,000USD. It's a good thing well over half of that is coming from financial aid (how I love being a veteran). I'd really like to stay there and finish out my degree, but I don't see myself being able to crap out enough money.
Ahh, that makes so much more sense now. Well, good luck and have fun. It looks like it's going to be amazing. What province is this school in?

It's in Pays de la Loire, about 2 hours west of Paris by train.

I'm not sure, but even if university is free in France, it's only free to French citizens.
You cant use Canadian student loans there?
I went to Waterloo to see my boyfriend, and I have to say Waterloo.
Why? Because it's the seventh most intelligent city in the world.
Regina.
Don't forget "boring". Granted I don't live in either but I've been around I suppose (shopping in Saskatoon frequently I guess). Macleans actually devoted a article to Regina (last weeks I think), and it wasn't really great press.

*checks parents* Hmmm...I seem to have a japanese father and American mother.
But in case thats not good enough, my childhood friend's father is from British Columbia and married a Japanese woman. Just saying. :)

Awesome. :D

I think that if it's a government loan, then no. Besides, if I go to university in the states, I would have to pay international student fees on top of the tuition and residence and all that jazz, which would spike up the cost 3 fold.

How is the city (town?) of Waterloo?
I voted Toronto. I was born there and lived there for the first 16 years of my 26 year old life, so I'm obviously biased. But it's not without good reason. It's a microcosm of our entire planet. You know multiculturalism is no utopia when you've lived in Toronto for as long as I have.

I'll probably be fiending for some Oberon after a month or so. The Belgians have some damned fine beer so I'll have to try some of their stuff out.

Ideally I'd like to teach English in France, but what I'll probably end up doing is teaching French over here. I'm doing my undergrad in French and I'll possibly do my postgrad in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
