It's only snowed twice up here this year. It's kinda nice and worrying at the same time. The local media is already making all sorts of dire predictions about the levels of the Great Lakes.

The weather there has been causing major havoc where I work. I work in the Produce section of a grocery store, and it's bloody impossible to get some things we need, as I think I will go on a rampage if another customer blames me because we cannot get ahold of a product. I don't even bloody order the stuff, yet somehow it is always my fault we are out of products. Bah, bloody california and all of your messed up weather this year.

It snows in California every year, a lot even. Even in Southern California. Just not everywhere in California. And when it does in places it doesn't usually people lose their fool minds. Last year it snowed on the Santa Cruz Mountains and people acted like the had never heard of this solid flaky rain before. News trucks lined the peak and locals stood shoulder to shoulder with tourists in slackjawed awe.

This is in the Inland Empire/ LA Valley, though, not Mt. Baldy or Big Bear, etc. etc. I mean, like i said, it was 80 F two days ago.

Y'know, the funny thing about that is, it hasn't snowed seriously in Connecticut all winter.
It was around 60 degrees last week -- for us, that's shorts and beach weather!
Getting kinda chilly now, though. I suspect the fun is over. Thanks for the good times while they lasted, El Nino and La Nina!

And there is people who doesnt believe in global warming...
I wonder what they will feel when the sea is 1 meter away from their houses.
Last weekend central Nagano got reminded that it's still part of the Snow Country, even if normally we get maybe a few inches that melts off quickly. This time around we got a foot and a half of snow... which promptly froze.
Thank God I'm not up in the northern part of Nagano though, they don't measure it in centimeters, but meters.
Yeah, talk to me when you're getting a foot or two dropped on half your state every other week and experiencing week after week of temperatures no higher than zero degrees Farenheit at high freakin' noon.

SOUTHERN california ISN'T california! that's part of mexico, or by rights ought to be as far as i'm concerned.
the REAL california where i grew up, colfax, truckee, donner summit, auburn; well in truckee where i started kindergarten, and at a place called norden on donner summit where i was living before i was weaned away from my parent's home back in 1968, it snows almost ALL the time. every winter anyway, and winter lasts at least 6 months, summer by contrast is about two days long, and if you're away on vaction you miss it. 20 FOOT drifts, and occasionaly even accumulations, are not at all uncommon!
i do wish it would snow down here in this damd hot valley where i live at the base of the mountains i mentioned, in a place called roseville (15 miles NE of sacramento). it did get cold here last night. somewhere down arround freezing, which is unusual for a mere 161 feet of elevation, as oppsed to the 7,000 plus feet of donner summit. and it's expected to get down below freezing again tonight. too bad we're not expecting any percipitation to go with it.

They are predicting that next year is going to be the warmest in recorded history for Canada. Not sure how they can that sort of thing considering they can't predict what the weather's going to be like thirty minutes from now but...
The warming is wreaking havoc. Pine beetle infestations in BC are directly linked to the warming weather, and of course we have the West Nile virus encroaching inland further and further every year as mosquitos fail to be wiped out by winter. Not to mention the permafrost is melting in the North, etc etc.

It's snowing right now! But only flurries. We're supossed to get 6-8 Inches tomorrow (15-20cm f0r you metric pansies) And I can't wait! We usually get 1-2 snowfalls a year here. (Eastern Iowa)

Yes, because everyone knows floods are communists. They affect both the rich, the poor and the politicians in the same way.
Anyway, I wonder how stupid people can be. They think its because of "El Nino", "La Nina", "Uncle Bob" and stuff like that. ANd every year there is a new "phenomena" that makes the climate go crazy.
Its funny. Its like changing the name of something so it doesnt look serious anymore. Change the name of global warming to "El Nino" (The kid) and wow, it wont destroy the world anymore.
Because trust me boys and girls, if you dont respect global warming, El Nino, La nina, Uncle Bob and their entire family will kick you in the ass.

Warmest in recorded history for the world. Warmest even that 2005 that is the warmest in recorded history. They predict that sort of thing because they're not making a specific claim, like what the temperature in Edmonton is going to be on July 1st, but a general assessment of the average temperature in the entire planet.

You seem to think the term was pulled out of someone's ass within the last few years, that it's a bogus term, a euphemism for Global Warming. None of that is true.
The first mention of the term "El Niño" to refer to climate occurs in 1892, when Captain Camilo Carrilo told the Geographical society congress in Lima that Peruvian sailors named the warm northerly current "El Niño" because it was most noticeable around Christmas.
And as for causes...
The mechanisms which might cause an El Niño event are still being investigated. It is difficult to find patterns which may show causes or allow forecasts.
Major theories:
* Jacob Bjerknes in 1969 suggested that an anomalously warm spot in the eastern Pacific can weaken the east-west temperature difference, causing weakening in the Walker circulation and trade wind flows, which push warm water to the west. The result is increasingly warm water toward the east.
* Wyrtki in 1975 proposed that increased trade winds could build up the western bulge of warm water, and any sudden weakening in the winds would allow that warm water to surge eastward. However, there was no such buildup preceding the 1982-83 event.
* Recharge oscillator: Several mechanisms have been proposed where warmth builds up in the equatorial area, then is dispersed to higher latitudes by an El Niño event. The cooler area then has to "recharge" warmth for several years before another event can take place.
* Western Pacific oscillator: In the western Pacific, several weather conditions can cause easterly wind anomalies. For example, a cyclone to the north and anticyclone to the south force easterly winds between. Such patterns may counteract the westward flows across the Pacific and create a tendency toward continuing the eastward motion. A weakening in the westward currents at such a time may be the final trigger.
* Equatorial Pacific Ocean may tend to be near El Niño conditions, with several random variations affecting behavior. Weather patterns from outside the area or volcanic events may be some such factors.
* The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is an important source of variability that can contribute to a more rapid evolution toward El Niño conditions through related fluctuations in low-level winds and precipitation over the western and central equatorial Pacific. Eastward-propagating oceanic Kelvin waves can be produced by MJO activity. Eisenman, Yu, and Tziperman (2005 [1]) have suggested that the MJO may in turn be influenced by a developing El Nino, leading to a positive feedback.
* Adams, Mann and Ammann showed in 2003, using statistical analysis of paleoclimatic records, that a volcanic event in the tropics tends to trigger a three year El Niño followed by three years of La Niña.

It snows every year in California just not in LA, San Francisco and most of the Central Valley (where all the produce comes from). The last time it snowed in those areas was the 1990's and before that the 1960's.
Did you know California has the record for most snowfall in the U.S in January 1911 390 inches of snow fell in Tamarack, CA.
