I say Second Coming.

Gamma Ray burst.

Nuking New York and Washington DC.

I've come second and third times and nothing has ever happened.
EDIT: At least not to our nation's infrastructure.

I say the second coming as well. Just imagine what'll happen when all those asshole jeziz-freaks find out they don't get a ticket. It'll be worse than anything that could possibly be imagined.

Yup. This is probably as bad as it could get. We could maybe predict the sun going nova and give us a few years to build a space ark, but we'd have zero warning of a gamma ray burst. By the time we detect it, we're already dead.

No, the Earth would be sterilised from bacteria upwards. Everything would die, if a gamma ray burst erupted close (500ly or so) from Earth and was pointed our way. We're talking having the total energy output of the entire galaxy thrown at us in the span of a few minutes.

EDIT: Luckily, they only seem to be common in metal-poor galaxies, and the Milky Way is highly metal rich.

My vote then goes to the Moon being impacted by a very large asteroid, knocking it into a swiftly degrading orbit, eventually skimming the atmosphere of Earth, disrupting tides, until eventually impacting and practically splitting the planet in two.
