The worst storm in 25 years.

Oklahoma is being hit by the worst ice storm in 25 years. The ice and sleet started about 10 AM and isn't expected to stop until Sunday. The temperature isn't expected to go above freezing until next Wednesday.

I came home at 11:30 AM and the roads already were very slick with slush from the sleet. The temperature has continued to drop and they are expecting wide spread power outages due to the ice build up on power lines.

Fortunately, the wife ordered another rick of wood so we can have heat if the electricity goes out. We also have a gas stove and oven so we can cook. Lots of candles and an oil lamp will provide light and we have lots of food in the house.

I'll be glad to leave Oklahoma and move to Louisiana in two years, eight months, and two days. :)

We're getting some of that right now in DFW. Went and stocked up on kerosene, dog food, and wood. Also have the benz filled up in case of electrical outage. ( I can use it like a small generator if need be)

so what actually happens in an ice storm then? is it where the ground temp is lower than the air temp so you get precipitation freezing on contact with the ground? just cuz i'm thinking that if there's ice forming the precipitation has to come down as liquid which means it must be at or above freezing point but you say the actual recorded temperature is well below freezing. i don't think we really get them over here so i don't have a clue what they are like.

it rains ice, not snow, not hail, but something inbetween, there is a foot of solid ice on my patio, my poor dog is sliding all over trying to get out to pee.

It's the warmth that kills ya here. In the Northern US, we live on the snow. Hell, back home we build houses with doors on the 2nd floor to get above the snowdrifts during winter. Its when it's warm, above freezing during the day, that kills ya. When the rain becomes ice it gets bad. It's like you're driving on a sheet of ice.

Exactly what the name says. It usually starts as freezing rain (rain that freezes on contact) and moves to sleet as the temperature drops. It does, however, stick to everything, similar to snow

An ice storm is a large quantity of freezing rain due to an inversion layer. Air higher up is above freezing. Air at ground level is below freezing. As rain falls it super-cools and freezes on contact to whatever it hits. This causes an ice layer to build up on everything.

Ice - like water- is heavy. During the huge ice storm in the north east about a decade ago (freezing rain for four straight days) it brought down almost the entire network of high-tension wires that brought all the power into Montreal. And by "brought down" I mean "collapsed the entire towers and lines". These fallen lines wind up getting buried into the ice on the ground and had to be carved out with chainsaws while the towers got rebuilt.

http://images.usatoday.com/weather/wice98.htm

Between the destruction of power lines, trees, etc, the roads also become impassable which makes emergency services completly ineffective.

We're having a pretty mild winter here. I went to the mailbox this morning in barefeet and shorts, no shirt. :D

I suppose it probably won't be too good come summer time. I'm thinking this mild winter isn't allowing the water to get too cold which means it won't take it too much to rise to the Hurricane formula. We'll see.

The upper air temperature is above freezing so the precipitation comes down as rain. However, the lower air temperature is below freezing, so the rain freezes when it contacts the trees, power lines and ground. The trees break from the weight of the ice and hit the power lines when the limbs fall. The ice on the power lines weighs them down and they break. The result is lots of ice on the roads making driving almost impossible and wide spread power outages.

The weather all over has been pretty strange. Friends tell me it's been snowing in Southern California - Riverside, San Bernardino, Redlands - all places that never get snow. There've been blizzards in Colorado Springs, which is highly unusual. Another friend has reported that there has been no snow in Indiana, also unusual. Now ice storms in Oklahoma and Texas.

Oh, but George Clooney is involved. He's producing and starring in a new movie called A Storm in the Heartland, set in Oklahoma. No joke. It is the story of a veteran ER pediatrician who finds his hospital swamped with snake-bitten terrorists from a hijacked plane that was downed by the worst ice storm in Oklahoma in 25 years. Meanwhile, he gets intimate with an attractive female U.S. Marshal and battles corruption and nepotism within the hospital and eventually learns of and takes down a corrupt lobbyist who is defrauding American Indian tribes and the American public at the highest levels.

You should have just said that the ice froze your doors shut and you couldn't let them in.

Oh, and welcome to a normal winter from Minnesota. You seem to have gotten our weather this year. Thanks for taking it off our hands.

We have had little snow, it was warm up until a few weeks ago(Now it's freezing balls outside), and overall it hasn't sucked.

However, the day after the one bloody time it snowed(Alot), it got warm for a day, then balls-cold, leaving everything in a nice sheet of 6 inch ice, that for some ungodly reason the City crew hasn't gotten around to salting and sanding the bloody streets yet. So, for the past two weeks, I have been driving on thick as hell sheets of ice.

Seriously, what the hell is going on with that? Usually they have it off in a day, but it's been there for bloody two weeks now.

Uh... a bit of a tangent.

Anywho, thanks for taking our weather.

Celtland and Smubnk and anyone else who got the ice, thanks for taking the hit. The forecast earlier was for that to hit here in Iowa where I'm visiting family. No ice storm, but it's still cold as the proverbial witches teat. I can't remember the last time I saw negative F, if ever. (Yeah, I know some of ya'll will laugh - just remember I grew up in southeast Texas.)

Your mother-in-law?

LOL. From all that poor Smunkee has told us about these people, no, but that was just too good to let pass.

In this case, sounds like they just stopped paying their rent.

well, I called my church and they brought the church van and drove the family to the red cross shelter.......the shelter wouldn't keep the baby so they brought her back to me, I wish I could keep her, poor kid, I gave her a bath this morning and she acted like she never had one......:(

I have to head to the store soon and pick up baby supplies, so everyone send good ice driving thoughts.....I already called Child Services and told them the situation, I have to keep the kid through the weekend though anyway.

Good luck and good job. Sounds like you did the right thing - a shelter and CPS sound just like what these people need.

You should have let them stay. If weather worsens and you find yourself trapped without food, you can eat them.

What is with all the extreme weather that has been going on ... hurricanes, storms, tsunamis, and 2006 was the hottest year ever, or something like that. My power was out in the pacific northwest for days after the storm a month ago. And we got snow in Seattle twice this winter.

Must be Global Warming. Shit.

It kicks ass, that's what. It wasn't like the snow we got here was anything serious, so all that happened was school got cancelled (and as a senior, I don't have to make up snow days =D).

The wind storm sucked, though. That really sucked. No power for five days and it was freezing.

And Global Climate Change (Not warming, everywhere. It's a misnomer.) is gonna mean we get more snow and more intense snow in the winters. Flooding will become worse too, so all us unfortunate Eastsiders are gonna have fun...
