Greatest Live Album...

Might do a poll might not...see what happens...

I have 2 nominations -

1 - Motorhead - No Sleep til Hammersmith

2 - Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan

Yeah they are metal bands...but the albums are....amazing.

Now I like most music (not this modern R&B bollocks though...but thats a personal thing and to be honest I am sure there are some really 'down n dirty' sounds) so I'd like to expand my ear so to speak to include other genres within the 'live album' experience...

Classical to Jazz...to R&B to even Chamber Music...

Have at it folks!

Haven't heard the Motorhead yet. Might have to check it out. :)

Though, to me, there is the one, the only Emperial Live Ceremony. By Emperor of course.

Also, Live Legacy by Dissection is great. Dark Funeral's live one is good as well.

I have a version on 2 CDs. It's about 120 minutes long, so I think that's complete.

And it's easily the best live Iron Maiden album.

I'd like to nominate Rainbow - Live on Stage.

Bummer! I only have the single CD. (And the vinyl)

Then again, the Real Live/Dead one is pretty good, too. (Which I got as two seperate CDs).

One of the reasons I'm such a fan of Iron Maiden is that they sound really good and clear live on stage when compared to other bands. Hell, even the bootleg I got from a concert I was at sounds great.

Get your head out of your ass. Live music is outstanding, unless of course the band sucks, then it is going to be horrible. But, there are quite a lot of great bands and artists who work magic when they play live.

I think their cold water tank in the attic either broke or started overflowing. I noticed some water pouring down their wall last night, but assumed it was just a problem with their guttering. I then woke up this morning to find that water had been streaming through my wall and onto my records.

Not good.

Still, I believe all the records should still be playable, even if some of them do end up with covers that look like corrugated cardboard when they dry out.

I've had some close calls with my record collection, to tell the truth.

It's when my dad picks up my records. Oh god, he really doesn't handle them properly. He picks them up quickly without care (he doesn't give a shit if the sleeves are down; the records could fall out at any time and break), he tosses them instead of putting them down gently, and he literally rips them out of their sleeves.

Ugh. I need to buy a locking storage box for them.

Thankfully the water was clean - it isn't as if they had sewerage poured over them - and so its really only a question of drying them out.

I grabbed them all and shifted them to my folks' house where there is more space for them to dry out, and have been cycling sheets of newspaper in between them so as to draw some of the dampness out.

There are probably 300 of the 500 wet ones should be fine, about 150 which will have tidemarks, and maybe 50 which will end up in a rather sorry state.

One of the heartbreaking things was taking cellophane off some of them which had been on them for twenty years...

You should boobytrap their house so they get decapitated and cut to pieces by non-salvageable records.

...of course, it would be eight Acker Bilk records which get off scot-free, while the Patti Smith ones have an early bath...

Great live record - The Clash playing at the Bob Marley memorial in 1980 in Jamaica, and playing almost their entire set made up out of their reggae and dub tunes. I believe it is sometimes known as From London To Jamaica. Also of note is the boot from the US festival sponsored by Apple from '82, which although features Combat Rock tunes a bit heavily, and has a stand in drummer post-Topper Headon, is a lively and empassioned mix through their back catalogue including a couple of rarely performed tunes.

The CD version of The Who's Live At Leeds blows the socks off the rather limited selection of tracks on the vinyl version, but doesn't seem to catch quite the same jagged edge and danger that was visible in some of their 71-73 performances if you judge by the footage on The Kids Are Alright.

MARS78 is almost a live LP, being the demos and live performances of a NY No Wave band from '78 remixed by Jim Foetus. There are some sublime moments on that LP which pre-empt post-rock, shoegazing and Einsturzende Neubaten. An undeservedly obscure record. Speaking of which, the similar compilation of live and demos material Body To Body, Job To Job by The Swans has a noble savagery which shouldn't be overlooked.

Oooooh. Tonal Plexus by Glenn Branca - about thirty guitarists featuring your Sonic Youth's and your pre-Helmet's and your Swans and other assorted detritus of the NY scene making a frightening massed drone/gamelan wail for about forty minutes in four movements. Quality stuff.

EDIT: Lou Reed's Rock And Roll Animal - even though it sounds like it had more overdubs than Thin Lizzy's Live And Dangerous ( which famously replaced all the guitars, basses, vocals, and some of the drum parts in the studio, leaving basically a cymbal wash and some crowd noise left from the original live performance.

...I also can't seem to currently recall any of the names of the Joan Baez live LP's. There is one real standout there, but its name eludes me.

They appear on the influential No New York compilation LP produced by Brian Eno, along with DNA, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and James Chance and the Contortions, which brought No Wave into the foreground.

I thought it sounded familiar...

oooohhh... forgotten fantastic live punk EP - Last Bus To Debden by The Epileptics. Not great performances, not great recording, not great tunes, but a fantastic document of the disinterest and abuse that characterised late 70's/early '80s UK punk scene. Four tracks of disaffected nonsense and inter-tune harranging of both the audience and the band. They later turned into the much more well known Flux Of Pink Indians. The EP contains the first outing of Tube Disasters on vinyl. Of course, I stupidly gave this one away a few years back...

Classic cover. Classic piece of vinyl.

Note the finely handtooled 'wereallywannabeCRASS' graphics.

EDIT: speaking of which, NEVER EVER BLOODY ANYTIME EVER pay good money for a live Discharge recording. Quality wise, much as I lurve pre-Grave New World Discharge, their live records make Only Stupid Bastards Help EMI by Conflict seem like Carajan conducting the LSO.

This one rocks.

Though, to me, there is the one, the only Emperial Live Ceremony. By Emperor of course.

Also, Live Legacy by Dissection is great. Dark Funeral's live one is good as well.

Emperor has a live album? I must get it!

I nominate the Who at the Isle of Wight ('70).

I have it on DVD, the new one with Naked Eye and Substitute.

I'm just gonna come out and say it and I'll probably get crap for saying it.... KISS "Alive!" It may not be the most fantastic display of musicianship ever created, but I think it really redifined the typical "Live album" Also a personal favorite of mine (although i prefer to just watch the video) is Stray Cats' "Rumble in Brixton." Mainly because it is a divine experience to watch Lee Rocker and Brian Setzer play together.

Heh, yep. Got that second one (nicked from my dad), and it is indeed great. :)

Other than that, I've only got The Song Remains The Same (Led Zep) and Hullabaloo (Muse). I can quite easily tell you which is the better of the two, and it's Hullabaloo. I'm kidding. That's a rubbish album.

Don't worry, no crucifxion awaits you for saying that. I almost posted about it earlier, as you say, as an album it is no great shakes, but it remains somewhat hard to ignore as it has come to symbolise so much (for good or ill...). Similarly for Queen Live Killers - few if any great performances, with the exception of the solo in Brighton Rock, but it is such a time piece and such a blueprint for so many of the somewhat less well carried out and executed live LP's that followed.

Good one, too. I hope you own it on vinyl - it includes more songs!
I remember that 2 or 3 times you have said Rock in Rio was awesome, so it was fair to assume that would be your choice.

Elementary my dear Watson.

I'm still surprised that no-one has mentioned any other genres outside of rock/metal/punk....

Not even any folk bands!

Or even the bootleg of Bob Dylan at Manchester Free Trade Hall....

Iron Maiden and Rush both have good live albums. I prefer "Rock over Rio" to "Live after Death", however.

I haven't heard too many good live albums. Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoads Tribute, however, is one of the few where many of the songs are actually performed better than their recorded versions.

I have a soft spot for Nirvana's unplugged album, too.

Thankfully my early Hawkwind, complete with ludicrous foldout covers, seems to have got off lightly. Sections C-F, M-P and S-W bore the brunt of the cascade.

Not the Venom....please say its not so.....

You win the thread.

Why? The performances are bloated and overblown, and some of the songs are totally destroyed (Magic Bus being the standout).

A live album should make one feel energised. It shouldn't make one want to hang himself after listening to it.
