The population of the facility rarely exceeds ten, and its area is 5920 sq. ft.

haha, it seems a bit cramped for my taste...

Since Sealand is technically within the UK's territorial waters, i'm not sure they'd be able to get away with running pirate servers.

A remote island somewhere is a much better prospect.

IIRC they tried to pull that trick to claim Sealand. Sealand reciprocated and claimed much of Essex. Eventually they gave up...

It doesn't matter where it's located, it's still a sovereign nation. Andorra is technically located within the borders of France and/or Spain depending on how you look at a map but it'st still a soveriegn nation. The Vatican is part of ROME, and is still a sovereign nation.

Those countries both have diplomatic recognition.

Sealand does not. If whomever is running Sealand begins conducting activities illegal in the UK, look for some sort of retribution. The reason they've lasted so long is because their existence is benign.

Well, I don't know how likely it is they'll succed at any attempts to shut down Pirate Bay. The Pirate Bay is one of the most obvious bittorrent sites in the world and it STILL couldn't get shut down by Swedish officials. I think that says something, though whether it's about incompetance of Swedish authorities or the brilliance of the Pirate Bay in hiding their servers, I don't know.

Pirate Bay would probably just move elsewhere. I wouldn't expect Sealand to survive, though.

Have you looked at Sealand lately? Considering the...dirth...of territory, I'd take anything. Hell, I'd take Billyjoebob Alabama, let alone Essex.

Kanabia: Oh, I think it would, if only to continue to amuse those of us who like the idea of people buying countries at random.

True, but...well...Essex? Speaking as someone from there, I'd rather claim ownership of a 50-year-dead rat.

Well, it's still land. Note that they are claiming the land of Essex, not the people, which I think is what you're really complaining about.

Not that I know anything about Essex, of course. I could be sadly mistaken.

No, I'm complaining about the county. It has zero natural resources (except for fish, crustacea, molluscs, etc, which I don't imagine Sealand is short of) and nothing of any interest (unless you count the M25). The people are no worse and no better than anyone else in the UK.

Well...that shut me up. Learn to stop claiming to know stuff about other countries, Matt. :(

Sealand is de facto recognised by the German authorities. It's also used as a tax shelter and as offshore hosting for materials questionable under UK law. As such, it's hardly beneign, and the UK hasn't done shit about it because it's not legally UK territory.

The Swedes got their servers. IIRC, they were able to flee the country and set up shop in the Netherlands.

Wasn't there a court case in the UK regarding Sealand's soveriegnty?

You're thinking of Haven Co. They didn't buy the place. They opened business there.

They're in a bit of an ambiguous situation. But the government of the UK hasn't taken action against them for previous dodgyness...

Bit of a tricky one, eh?

Even a space platform of some sort would have legal issues over sovereignty.

In re Duchy of Sealand, Federal Republic of Germany, Administrative Court of Cologne, 3 May 1978, said they weren't a soverign state.
