I've hardly listened to any Reggae music, but what I have heard sounds decent and I'd like to hear more of it. Anyone got any suggestions of artists I should look up (i.e., ones who make music that can be enjoyed by the uninitiated, or ones who exemplify the genre as a whole?).

The only Reggae musician I know of is Bob Marley, and I intend to find some of his music. Any other suggestions are welcome.

The Pietasters are great, people say they are ska, and so do they, but the sound is very reggae to me.

They were ska. Ska grew partly out of reggae

Get your hands on Lee 'Scratch' Perry, esp his Black Ark anthologies. Great introduction into the world of Reggae.
Also check out Peter Tosh, Junior Murvin, Desmond Dekker (though technically he's ska, but such a huge influence on both reggae and ska you need to hear him), Heptones, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, and for something a bit more mainstream UB40 (early stuff).
Fat Freddy's Drop is an awesome Kiwi reggae/dub band out at present. Released a great album (Fantastic Voyages) late last year. In a similar dub vein, check out Salmanella Dub (another awesome Kiwi band).

Only way to see reggae. Makes so much more sense when you are.
I saw Lee Perry vs Mad Professor a few years ago. Had no dope on me, but I (rightly) figured it wouldn't matter. Within 10 minutes of being in the hall, I was pretty much gone from passive smoking.

The soundtrack to the film The Harder They Come is an important reggae record, and includes music by

Jimmy Cliff
The Melodians
The Maytals
The Slickers
Scotty
etc.

Reggae is generally quite an accessible genre to listen to.

Bad Brains did some good Reggae. Other than them and Bob Marley I don't know too much of the genre.

Check out some Peter Tosh, Buju Banton, the Abyssinians, Israel Vibration, well one could list a shitload of artists and there are different kinds of reggae. Your best bet might be to find any and all radio stations in your area that play reggae. In my part of NJ we've got several radio stations that have weekly reggae radio shows. My favorite is on Sunday afternoon 3-6 pm on 91.3fm. Tune around your radio dial and you should find one or more. They'll expose you to many different bands.

For that matter you could also try some live365.com radio channels that play reggae as well.

Oh where to start! LOL

I'm a dub freak...Lee Perry is a fine choice (and my favorite artist)...

Upsetters is a good start...

You'll want to look into King Tubby as well...

Also Prince Buster and anything done by Coxone...

Really you might want to go to the start and get your hands on some Skatalittes (sp?) and Jackie Mittoo...

The Ethiopians as well...

oh man...I could go on and on LOL

yeah, that's one of the problems. of course, musicians in general have a sort of bad track record on a number of lines when it comes to such things.

True. It does make me laugh though when some bright young things are listening to these idiots and then the light clicks...

its a shame coz an awful lot of dub is just a joy to listen to. Like Lee Perry...

I'm just thankful no one has asked for favorite tracks! LOL

I do like 8 by 8 though...and of course 007...

i tend not to bother listening to the lyrics of songs. most of them are pretty moronic even when they aren't bigotted in some way. of course, some songwriters are worth listening to but it's the music i'm more interested in generally.

one of the few redeeming features of rastafari is that it inspires some good music, whereas modern christianity seems to mainly inspire creed

lol! yeh, why is christian music so crap?! i have a friend who is a born again christian and she threw out all her old music (she had really great musical taste) and now only listens to christian rock, especially while driving. i think it might be a covert evangelising technique cuz she only seems to listen to music while driving if there are others in the car. drives me crazy!

....Buju Banton...

Him, Sizzla and Bounty Killah said some predictably fucked up shit about homosexuals recently....Anyway Buju's in my bad books until I can grit my teeth and ignore the homophobia and just listen to the awe-inspiringly good music

Surprised noone mentioned Desmond Dekker (although he is more of a Ska artisit).

OP you should try some Dub as well. King Tubby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Tubby) for preference...

Raggae is cheap and boring, and because of that it is making me aggressive. And because it is so closely related to the second most stupid ideology/religion on the planet, it is making me even more aggressive.
