if not to lock up people who annoy me?

I just called the cops (again) on my neighbors (yep, same ones) this time they have been shooting their gun (their illegal gun) at my dog.

idiots.

They get locked up about once every 2 months, why do they keep getting out?

what do you think prison is for? punishment? deterrent? keeping people from shooting at my dog?

answer the poll........elaborate in the thread.

I don't understand why you haven't attached a laser to your dog yet. Who would shoot a dog with a laser attached to it? Nobody.

prison is punishment. Since it is a punishment, and rational people fear punishment, it is likewise a deterrent.

Thus prison exists both simultaniously as punishment for act done, and deterrent for future acts. The punishment is administered, and since it is adminstered rational people will act in a way to avoid punishment.

they don't like him because he goes berserk (that's a technical term) when they try to get in my yard.

what business do they have in my yard? absolutely none at all.

they might be upset (today) that my kid and their kid got into a fight today.....I broke it up, but not before their kid got a black eye, I just ain't too fast with a slipped disc.

its part of an entire system of hierarchical asymmetrical control and surveillance that is the real power behind the facade of egalitarian social relations in our society

In Arizona, florida and an increasing number of states you're allowed to shoot trespassers. Especially armed ones.

If someone with a gun came over my fence - especially if he threatened my dog - he wouldnt get very far in life.

I really should have, my kid was going to win.

he did, they were playing basketball and he fouled her and she called foul and they all agreed, and she was shooting her free throw and he pushed her down, of course she got up and dusted herself off and started to walk away, when he hit her from behind.........my kid just isn't the type to ignore that, I guess she inherited more of me than I thought.

now, big daddy next door, he is probably embarrassed that his 10 year old son got beat down by my 5 year old ballerina, but hey, don't hit a girl unless you want to deal with the consequences.

it's been legal here since I was a kid, however my guns are locked up away from home because of the kids, if he did get past my dog he would meet up with my bat'leth though, I am sure he would run in the opposite direction before I decapitated him.......or not, either way he wouldn't be bothering me anymore.

I actually had to take lessons, they are dangerous, if you are not careful you could really injure yourself trying to use it.

it's pretty. :)

If anyone was wondering what happened, he got arrested for shooting an illegal gun at my dog, he posted bail this morning and is home again now. He is a prior felon (twice) so if he makes it to court he will probably be locked up for a while.......maybe.

His kids showed up on my doorstep this morning looking for food, he just got them back from child services and they didn't have anything but beer in the house and were going to ditch school today because they didn't have a ride since their mom took the car to bail dad out of jail.

I fed them, and walked them to the bus stop. I hope they don't show up looking for dinner. :( I feel so bad for those kids, they annoy the crap out of me but I know it's because they have sucky parents.

Also where does one get Bat'leth lessons in Oklahoma? Strikes me as a pretty good close quarters weapon, if you know how to use it.

there are a surprising amount of Trekkies around here......I met one at con that taught it, I bought a practice bat'leth and learned.

It was promoted as an "exercise program" and believe me it takes quite a bit of upper body strength to control it.

The purpose of prison is to rehabilitate criminals and to keep them away from law abiding citizens for the duration of the time that they are deemed unsafe.

answer the poll........elaborate in the thread.it depends on what time period you look at. before pre 1900's, prision was punnishment, it was meant to be a very, very bad place to go. and when one got out, one strove never to go back there again. however, nowadays, people view it as rehab, where in prision, one gets cable TV, their own private room or a roommate, clean facilities, and free internet (some prisions provide this)

they don't like him because he goes berserk (that's a technical term) when they try to get in my yard.

what business do they have in my yard? absolutely none at all. :mad:put up security cameras and charge them with trespassing as well. especially if you catch them in the act of shooting at your dog.

Child Services recently returned them to the parents? if their kids show up for dinner, feed them then call child services. no food, not even taken and dropped off at school while mommy goes and bails dad out of jail. I have a feeling those parents are a detriment to the health and welfare of the kids.

Jail is to keep voters happy nowadays odds are we will soon have Corporal punishment again and won’t that be fun

And I say there isn’t much you can do beyond maybe building some great wall of Smunkeeville
Or teaching your dog to attack people

I am fairly torn on what you should do about his kids though I heard homes aren’t too good but then again the only person I know who’s bin in one never had to look for food

Punishment and deterrent...you're really into that aren't you? :D What...no talk of rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation does nothing. The criminal commits his sinful deed, goes to prison and at a cost to the tax payer under goes 'rehab', which does nothing. He then is released back into the public and will re-offend because he has not been truly punished.

The punishment must fit the crime and the punishment must be enough of a deterrent that the potential criminal has waking nightmares about the consequences of his actions. And he who has offended must relive the hell of his sins. He must fully repent, and his punishment can only be deemed complete when he has shown true remorse and no theatrics to disguise his lack of sincere remorse.

Before the eyes of God, the criminal must show he has truly reformed, otherwise he must continued to be punished, and the death penalty is no punishment at all, as the criminal is being let off easily. The criminal must have nothing but the bare basics, one notch above what a common homeless man does.

My girlfriend's nine-year-old daughter and I both have our own lightsabres -- mine red and hers green (I figured since she's little, she should have Yoda's colour :D ) -- but not the uber-expensive ones to which you linked. Those're made of glass, so they're not really good for the lightsabre battles we like to have in our living room that annoy my gf so much. :D

Although the Warsies who show up to Trek conventions and start crap annoy me........a LOT.

Why they'd show up just to be dickheads is beyond me. I like 'em both myself (not counting Voyager), but SW is better in my opinion. I'd never consider hitting a Trek convention just to be an ass like that, though.

it's apparently boring here. :p They try to get all the "contradictions" together to discredit the cannon of Trek, but they fail to realize that I really watched a LOT of Star Wars growing up and they just aren't going to win that fight.

I feel the system as is, is most effective at separating those that break the rules of society from those that wish to obey them.

It is a necessary function but I would wish a reform component and design built in as well so while they are keeping us separated they are also working on making people productive members of society as well.
