"They're fighting each other, and we're just here" Iraq/Vietnam

Last night on NBC I saw bit of a piece they were doing on Iraq, interviewing some soldiers in their ACU and plate carriers, and one said something I thought was very striking.

"They're fighting each other, and we're just here."

This echoes, almost to the word, what I've heard many times from my Vietnam-vet father regarding that war.

What are your thoughts on the growing similarity between American involvement in Iraq, complete with programs of "Iraqification," and America's involvement in Vietnam?

My uncle says the same thing about Vietnam; my cousin (in Iraq) has said some similar things about that situation.

I don't think America can "win," Iraq. In fact, thats become obvious. I don't think we'll pull out either, for whatever reason...pride perhaps?

Unfortunately, I forsee it getting worse before it gets better.

Meh. Everyone's fighting each other BECAUSE the Americans are there, to an extent. I know he was a tyrant, but things were in far more order under Saddam.
