Roguelikes. Again.

So, having got another win there a few days ago in ADOM, and still feeling that I'm missing something obvious when it comes to the controls in Dwarven Fortress, and not really liking Nethack (for its anachronsitic and generally silly atmosphere)...

...what Roguelike should I give a look at?

Crawl never grabbed me and ToME similarly passed me by somewhat.

DoomRL is a pretty interesting and different take on the Rogue Genre.

Aye, I know it well, and in the most recent version the talents system is no longer utterly broken. This recent version also seems considerable harder than the last, which was pretty much a coffee-break kind of game.

You should take the Pantheon of Argonak. It is just past the sea of Arthonia. There, a dwarven warlord rules the Anonian people with the power of the Relian Stone. Defeat the dwarven oppressor by using the Blood Spell in the Temple of Serilius and you will ascend to the Ethonian plane to do battle with the Dragon of Eriborn and take posession of the Strinking Stone of the Souless. Use this stone to forge the Sword of Revelations, a +5 vorpal sword of piercing. With this sword, go to a bar, show it to some hot chick and score. ;)

I enjoyed the hell out of Dwarf Fortress. Great fun.

But, aside from Nethack and Dwarf Fortress, I'm not familiar with any other Roguelikes. I'm eager to see what people offer up.

Nethack is awesome. What is wrong with you?

I find its jokey style to be somewhat irritating and the literal kitchen-sink attitude of the dev team to be jarring, removing any immersive feeling and robbing me of my willing suspension of disbelief. ADOM remains a much more consistent game and its single joke (concerning karmic lizards) is a relatively subtle unobtrusive one.

I also still find its interface somewhat awkward compared to more recent roguelikes.

Nethack isn't meant to be immersive. No game meant to be immersive would be that lethal.

I also still find its interface somewhat awkward compared to more recent roguelikes.
Do you use a Mac? The Mac version of Nethack is awkward.

I have absolutely no idea what you people are talking about. And I may have eaten the bunny and/or the pancake on its head.
