A Map of War (http://www.mapsofwar.com/images/EMPIRE17.swf) <--Clickmedammit

5000 years of conquest packed into 90 seconds. I try to impress upon people the significance of a solid historical perspective when viewing current affairs, if for no other reason, so that it can be seen how much worse the world once was. Notice how insignificant our current conflicts are in comparison to the world spanning empires of conquest that once carved up this region of the world.

The vast sweep of flank states across the Middle East, at various different points in history, is quite interesting, no?

I'd have prefered if it left in the surrounding kingdoms and empires. A waxing and waning of different religions and ethnicities would have been good too.

As is, I find it quite cute, but not very informative. What bearing do the Egyptian Pharoahs have on the middle east today?

Well, the first serious pursuit of civilized nations that set them apart from earlier, more primitive societies was the expansion of empires. If the Middle East is the "Cradle of Civilization" it stands to reason that it would have the longest, bloodiest history of conquest on Earth. Sure enough, that land has been carved up by so many empires that our modern concept of sovereignty seems pretty bloody novel in comparison.

But yes, it is in the middle of things, so to speak… And did anyone else notice how few of those empires took any serious interest in the Arabian Peninsula. Whasamater? They don’t like barren desert!?! :D

That would have been nice, yes. The color coding would probably be a bitch to work out though. Maybe they'll make a better one in the future.

It's of the wider world, so not as detailed with regards to the middle-east (It only shows Christianity, Islam and Judaism contesting for the middle-east - no other religions such as zorastrianism).

History of Religion and it's Wars (http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/history-of-religion.html)

Pretty interesting, as well. The Buddhists never cause any trouble. :D

AND here is one about America's wars all over the world from the Founding Fathers onward. Plus which party led them and their death tole. Awesome!

America's Wars (http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/american-wars.html)

These things aren't nearly as detailed as I'd like them to be, but as short glances of historical scope, they are pretty damn interesting.

EDIT: Sorry about that, it wouldn't post, then it logged me out, then I tried again.
