Alright, so I'm about a phonecall away from ordering a new computer. Because I live in a small apartment with my fiancee we opted for a laptop, seeing we could do away with the extra furniture just to have the desktop and really, its more neat. Since my office got a deal with Dell, I chose the 9400 Series with the following specs.

2.0 ghz Core 2 Duo 4mb L2 cache.
2048 667mhz ram
160 gb hdd
Nvidia 7900gs 256mb graphic card
Build in sound and 802.11 wireless network
17' widescreen monitor.

For this machine i have to pay 1430 USD or 10k swedish krona.

Do you think I could find a better deal for less money, remember it has to be a laptop and have some gaming capabillities.

I think 10k is quite decent for a laptop of that standing.

Seems fairly capable, but there will be games you can't play. Probably a few actually. That is the price you pay for getting a laptop though.

Ordering a Laptop without seeing it? what has the world come to? Gaming capability depends on the quality of the display

yeah, its about £730 and seems pretty powerful.

i got a similar new laptop recently for about the same price and am very pleased with it, after hunting the net a ton for the best deals

what res does the LCD support? i know i had to pay extra to get mine to support a decent res (1920 * 1200)

If you need anything supporting that resolution, you have entirely different problems.

Det tycker jag också...

It got great reviews by gamers on sweclockers atleast, saying the 7900gs is a fairly capable card and the rest is up to standards with most desktops.

Hmmm, seeing the specs I doubt there are games I can't run with atleast medium settings right now... or what kind of crazy games are you thinking of now?;)

After reading around a bit about LCD's I opted for the not so shiny one with a bit lower resolution as playing games at the native resolution of the monitor can be quite gpu-heavy with that kind of resolution and I don't want to lose out in the converting down to lower resolutions. I think its 1200x900 or something which should work fine for me :)

Nah, I guess for photoshopping, cad-ing and various tasks that require very precise and clear images, the higher the res the better... but then maybe a larger screen than 17' is to prefer?

fair enough. i'm a graphics designer (officially) - i need big resolutions or i'll die. could have larger ones but i can't stand not being able to see my mouse at anything higher

That's almost point for point the laptop I got and am using right now. About the same price, too.

Poo on whoever says it's not a gaming computer, this thing is ten kinds of awesome. This one's a CyberPower, but my Dell at home is great. Their warantee is one of the best, and it's never given me any problems. All in all, you're getting a pretty sweet deal. :D

Do you have your own business? Otherwise there must be someone at the office who has a good board lying around collecting dust?
Even so, just for tracing, wacom boards can be great:)

That's what I thought and heard on message boards I visited... been told it runs bf 2145 at high framerates, surely it can handle games like Rainbow Six Vegas and such:)

nah i work for a small not-for-profit and things that aren't absolute priorities (like my own new laptop *cough* :p) just ain't gonna happen.
if i got one i'd probably have to get it myself... hence the procrastination ;)

however i've seen some really really great work done on them at trade shows and the like, and repro companies we work with, so i know if you got the skills they can be great...

For that price, a laptop of this kind is good enough.

But if you were to buy a regular personal computer, you would be able to get a much better one with the same money. And they usually arent that big, specially if you get a LSD screen

Well, I'd get a bit better computer, but basicly the only improvment, except a slightly faster processor, would be the GPU, and even there it wouldn't be a huge difference. Besides, it's all the furniture I want to get rid of, computer table and chair, speakers and all that. It will free up atleast 2 square meters, which is a big deal if you live two people in a flat of 37 sq.m :)
