You are calmly sailing your sub, it's a nice day to go out for a ride, a phone call comes on your cell, you answer, and out of frikking nowhere comes a Japanese tanker!

Or maybe the Japanese thought the sub was a whale.

I'm starting to get the feeling that someone needs to teach the Navy how to drive.

U.S. and allied navy vessels have been conducting anti-terror missions and operations against weapons and drug smuggling in the Arabian Gulf and other Mideast waters in recent years.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out what the sub is going to do against terrorists. It's my understanding the only type of missile subs there are are nuclear.

I believe you mean sail?

It's an attack sub, so it's mainly there to protect the aircraft carriers, I'd assume. Plus, you can use subs to monitor shipping without being detected yourself.

Er... in this case it's a fast attack sub, part of a carrier group. They protect the carrier against other subs.

And you COULD actually retrofit a boomer to fire non-nukes (it's been done), it's just that the other nuclear powers get jittery when a boomer surfaces and starts lobbing missiles at tents.

At least check the blind spots, which in a sub are... well... pretty much everywhere.

No, I mean drive. You drive a sub (IIRC). Ships are sailed and/or piloted.

You are correct in saying that all of the US submarines are nuclear. However this refers to their propulsion system, not their weapons. (Aka diesel/nuclear)

Submarines are then split into Attack and Ballistic submarines. Ballistic submarines are larger, carry large numbers of missiles. Attack submarines are faster, and are designed for attacking Ocean targets. Attack submarines are used to defend convoys, do some scouting.

Missile submarines don't carry very many nukes any more. They do carry a lot of cruise missiles though. According to a Navy Lieutenant I know most of the cruise missiles used during Operation "Shock and Awe" or whatever it was called came from submarines. This makes them very very important for killing terrorists in their tents. Attack submarines can also carry torpedo tube launched cruise missiles btw.
