The Big Incompetence thread!

Do lusers, stupid people and the like PO you as well? People who you do not trust to piss in a bucket, who unfortunately are in charge? I wish there was an efficient solution for them... like a forced upgrade to brain 1.0.

Example one: In a course, a blonde person, apparently chosen for her looks (she might even be competent in her subject but her accent is so bad, that no one understands her) corrected our assignments or should I say tried to? We can download the assignment-sheets in 2 different versions, PostScript and PDF and they look as if they are done in LaTeX. I do my homework in LaTeX as well. I sent her the homework as PostScript (why send it at all? well incompetence! the assignments covered topics, we had not learned earlier so they gave us one more day to solve the HW). Today, she asked me to send the file again. She couldn't open the file format...

Example two: Another part of the uni claims their programming assignments can be done with 'every OS that has $Library' ($Library is not resolved here to protect the guilty). Only ONE (of ~8) programming frameworks even compiled under Linux. Everytime, it was required to build a custom makefile.

Example three: Why can't at least native speakers get their language right? Why do they keep on messing up "there", "they're" and "their"... or "seit" and "seid"?

So, what are your experiences with incompetence?

Edit: "Lusers" as portmanteau of "loser" and "user" is no sign of incompetence.

It's boggling how many forms of incompetence there are, and dismaying how many of them i might encompass on a daily basis, at times simultaneously. :(

Rejistania - when it comes to IT I can relate a host of stories that would make your balls/ovaries (don't know if you are bloke or a lass) shrivel up faster than it take for me to Severity One NIGHTMARE!

Here is one...developers using production servers for testing new code releases.

People fucking up with new and/or complicated, or less than obvious shit that requires special knowledge, only bother me if I can reasonably expect them to know better.

Don't put your dog in the microwave, don't take deep, long breaths while under water, and don't expect every random idiot to know the exact same shit you know.

My schools website student website does not support Firefox (it sends you through an error page saying that some features may not work) yet every computer in the school has Firefox on it.

They are departments of computer science, they are SUPPOSED to know.

nah... I met some incompetent politicians however... how about: Not being able to tell the correct name of the party? (He said Schill-Partei and used a wrong name despite it being written on his propaganda-material)

sigh. Its on the rise once again. Time to take a break from the forums and hope it goes down a bit. I am off, I hope by the end of the week the trolling, spamming and flaming has died down a bit.

Yes, That was directed at YOU Rejistania and the other 2 flamers in pesos for pizza. The hamster man and neo underwearz.

as much of a big giant ramble that that was, i gotta say a lot of people truly are incompetent.

my best example would be that i created a wiki for a client to allow their members to quickly and easily amend their details online after i'd made all the appropriate pages and integrated the wiki in with said client's main website.
however, i think ONE of approx 200 of the client's members could actually use the fucking wiki.... i mean, how hard is it to go to a website, press edit and type shit in? after copious "how-to" guides and things sent out in the post to members, we had to give up on that technology and stick to the old fashioned idiom of do-it-yourself (database managed in-house, far away from moronic fuckers who'd either not know what to do with their own information or somehow, more likely, manage to fuck the whole thing up)

oh dear... that sucks!

New addition: One of the lecturers has an arch-nemesis: integer numbers. Our assignments already once lacked a number (18, 19, 21, 22). This time said lectuere added excercise 20 (a crossword as little joke) but had 2 excercises numbered as 37. How do I address these excercises in my homework? I used 37 1.0 and 37 2.0 ;)

Oh and my grandmother is resistent to any hints to adapt her behaviour. she keeps using the wrong terms for anything technical (technical here being anything more difficult than a ball pen) and mispronounces them so it really is a hassle to figure out what she means. Of course she keeps on messing things up. every 3 months she manages to switch her radio to AM instead of FM and then calls me (favorite victim for anything technical involving computers or entertainment systems) or my parents (favorite victim for all the rest). And anythings sounds as urgent as if it means the end of the world.

Did I mention she has internet and managed to view a website like entire 3 times? (To her defense: she loves using email and keeps in touch with the family abroad like that - she even once sent a mail from her holyday in china)

I sent a document that I made in MSWorks to a client who emailed me back and said "I can't open it" so I admitted my mistake and sent him a .PDF copy of the file, and he emailed me back and said he couldn't open it, so I emailed him the link to download Adobe Reader, and he emailed me back and asked if I could send him the file in MSWorks format because he can't figure out how to open the .PDF, so I forwarded him the original email with the original attachment then he emailed me back and said that he opened it and it looked good but wondered if I knew how to save it as a .PDF so he could email it to his wife...............  so I forwarded him the second attachment again, and he emailed me back and said

"you are frustrating me today, I can't open .pdf I need it in works so that I can save it to .pdf for my wife to see at work, you should have your husband do your emails because you aren't doing it right"

all of this is bad enough, except, and this is a big except, that my client is in the IT department at a federal government facility.

Major multi national technology company I worked for had some major kit in their Euro HQ. However the network had no resilience nor redundancy. I wanted to rectify this state of affairs (all the servers went into one server switch....copper not fibre and not via the backplane) as if this died there would be no business until we got the issue sorted. And as there was no spare kit nor a top flight break fix/replacement SLA the biz would be down for what...24 hours or so...

Thats not withstanding the core switches being end of life....

The company told me that they'd fix it if it broke and not to worry about it.

They were in the middle of a major IT Service Management rollout.

Or another company - the Euro security geek who set up some firewalls but forgot to turn them on.

Or a different security guy running a password tester on a live system.

Or the user who had undergone 4 weeks of IT training for the only application they would be using. User calls the helpdesk and complains that the mouse only went half was across the screen. Checked cables....all ok....Rebooted machine...same problem still there. Call out the on site engineer....engineer updates call with 'gave user larger mouse mat' LOL yeah...only took the mouse to the edge of the mat.
