Turkmenistan's interim leader Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov has promised to implement democracy, along with sweeping reforms to increase civil rights, improve the education system and the economy, and "help those in need" by reforming pensions. His predecessor President Niyazov had reportedly made ruthless cuts to pensions, resulting in widespread suffering among the country's elderly.

Berdymukhamedov also promised voters that the elections will be "just, honest and open," the state media reports said.

"I want to be president of a democratic country, where rich people live and work, where all conditions for free life and free work are created," he was quoted as saying.

There is, however, still only one legal political party, and all six candidates for the upcoming election have been chosen by Parliament.

How very boring. Sweeping reforms like "We're going to call schools mother-ariums" are much more interesting than free'um and 'mocracy.

I am not one to use the term 'lol', 'lmao' or 'rofl' lightly. When I use them I normally have performed the indicated action, as such I have yet to use the term 'lmao'.

LOL

Either this guy is lying through his teeth or he will be assassinated within the year.

I suspect it's the former. Giving up power via true democracy is not a common trait in Central Asia.

I think this is a ploy to receive western military aid seeing as how we are training the Kazakhstan army with the RMC

There is also the fact that the great game doesn’t look to kindly on Turkmenistan at this moment in time

I miss Niyazov. Sadly, I doubt his successor(s) will be anywhere near as crazy and zany as he was. :(

There is also the fact that the great game doesn’t look to kindly on Turkmenistan at this moment in timeI thought the normal ploy for Central Asian countries was to claim you have muslim terrorists in your country and that you need aid to buy 'interogation' equipment. And in return the CA country will interogate suspects that the CIA have had hard time getting infomation out of. All the CA country needs is a list of what these guys are supposed to be confessing to so as to avoid any miscarriages of justice.
