Okay, shit, let's get this set straight because I'm tired of seeing the comparisons:

So one lanky person in dark clothes with dark hair is emo, when a band of lanky people in dark clothes with dark hair is not?

Maybe if people dressed normally and got proper haircuts this wouldn't be an issue.

When a band doesnt sing about cutting themselves every night, no. :)

I can't even speak about their lyrics as I'm unfamiliar. I'll bet they're emo though, I mean, c'mon. There's not even a naked girl slaying a dragon on the cover. I mean, there's the girl, but where's the dragon?

hah. im just making the point that this particular band isnt "emo."

if you wanted to get into semantics, and if i had the energy and it wasnt 12 in the morning, id list the ones that are labelled the same way. some deserve it, many dont.

Just kidding.

What was the point of your distinction though? I'm kinda missing it. How am I supposed to tell one from t'other?

They look pretty emo to me.
But then, they might be some new kind of Goth as well. Buisness Goth, perhaps. But that one guy is wearing a yellow tie...so maybe HE is emo and the rest are Buisness Goth. Except the dude with the hat.
I dunno what he is.

Their style of music is so representative of what I think of as generic pop rock (unless the songs they have on their myspace aren't representative of their other stuff) that it's no wonder that they're lumped in with modern emo bands, which coincidentally also sound like generic pop rock.

But whatever, your taste, not mine, and if you're afraid to be associated with emo, then whatever. :p

Your statement kinda came off as confrontational and angsty. To me, anyway.

no, the only one that even comes close to what they were before going mainstream is the song at the bottom, and that isnt even really close to begin with either.

Well, confrontational maybe, but it wasn't meant to be angsty. It was more like a "rarrgh its all the same rubbish anyway who cares" *nod*

So they're generic pop rock now but weren't always so, then?

What seperates them from that association, then? Emo hasn't always been androgynous teenagers with facial piercings and jet black hair singing in a whiny voice about suicide, either.

True. Once upon a time it was pretty anti-mainstream.

But in the past decade or so, it's been diluted and modified to the point where it's almost unrecognisable from its original incarnation, and i'm left wondering - what exactly makes this Sugarcult band distinct from all of the so called "emo" acts out there anyway? Musically, i'm not really hearing it.

not much now. id say the "defining" pop rock band of today is, sadly, green day for their trashy, mainstream, MTV-viewer grabbing "hit" album... an atrocity to mainstream music.

as for the distinction, well, theres that guy thats classified as Classical/Death Metal/Emo, so you be the judge of who is or not.

I wouldn't even know anymore. I haven't listened to the radio in ages.

I listened to his pieces, he's merely an amateur classical pianist. I think he was just having shits and giggles.

Time for my position:

http://www.nokiaunwired.com/images/uploads/artist_images/PC-artist_sugarcult_main.jpg

As you can see by the trainers and stripy black socks they are pop rock

Whereas: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/84/Libertines_Group_Picture.jpg

As you can tell by the leather jackets (note that only one person is trying to pull this off in sugar cults picture), blue jeans, a troubled member (a key marker there) and obvious target audience of 18-20 something’s as opposed to the target audience of 14 in the above

Did anyone say they were? Not being confrontational, just wondering.

The trouble is that the meaning of the word "emo" is changing, sucking in other genres such as indie on the way. Through ignorance it is fast becoming a damn term meaning "not pop but still mainstream" in everyday use.

I'm too tired to think, so let's all listen to Reel Big Fish.

(Note: Misfits never were damn well emo).

i wholeheartedly agree with the whole emo sucking in indie thing, because it really is getting that way.

Maybe i'm not sure what you're getting at... seems to me that you like sugarcult and heards someone call them emo. but so what? you like them, who gives a shit what kind of music popular opinion classes them as?

Music genre's and the youth subcultures surrounding them have become so concerned with being "alternative" and naming themselves that terms like indie and emo don't even mean anything anymore. nor does alternative.

Why on earth does this need any kind of justification? I wouldn't want to be emo, but on the other hand, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in that band.
