Hoaxes
Hey all, I'm reading snopes.com for the first time, and frankly, I can't believe some of this stuff. I mean, I cannot believe who creates these stories. Some of them are just scary as hell, others are just fucking disgusting, and still others were clearly created to cause panic. The worst are the ones with doctored photos.
Frankly, some hoaxes are fine with me. For example, the famous human-semen-reduces-risk-of-breast-cancer. That was pretty much harmless, even though it was a hoax. It's not like many woman would go out and randomly give people oral sex to reduce their risk of breast cancer. On the other hand, the taiwanese-eat-babies hoax is just disgusting and horrible.

Where do they eat babies then? I thought it was either Taiwan or Canada; I'm sure it was in that general area anyway.

I hate Snopes. They report wrong information and refuse to correct it. The Cabbage Patch kids thing was started by a Portland talk radio host when he worked in Salt Lake. He contacted snopes repeatedly even sending them the segment from his program.
Also, the guy who designed the infamous Little Mermaid poster has contacted them repeatedly to fix the facts and they won't. He's the guy who designed it, of course he knows the story.
With these inaccuracies I know of, I wonder how much more is inaccurate that I don't know of.

A very funny hoax Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings fame) played on New Zealand is a mockumentary called Forgotten Silver
Jackson claims (satirically) that a relative of his invented not only the first film camera but also the first colour film and the first 'talkie', and somehow managed to make a 'lost' epic production of Salome!
Best of all, the first time it screened on NZ tv it was presented as genuine, fooling a significant proportion of the population (briefly).
Jackson uses visual metaphors, including 'leading (us) down the garden path' in the first few minutes...

The john titor hoax was pretty cool. Especially because some people have turned 'john titor research' into their life and actually argue about why it was true.
